Lately a chic term “flexitarian” is getting popular to identify those with a plant-based diet but also with occasional inclusion of meat products. It may be hard for some meat lovers to exclude meat in their meal, Veggie SF may be a good try as some of their dishes offer rich flavours that are on par with meaty food.

Reservation for lunch is a must although the restaurant can accommodate some 30 customers, with a new trend and a reasonable price of around $120 in Central, it’s not difficult to imagine the venue is fully packed in that rush hour.

It shares the same menu for lunch and dinner, just that complementary soup and house drink will come as a lunch set on weekdays. Although with an acronym SF which means San Francisco, Veggie SF is smart to adopt pleasing dishes from various Asian cuisines such as Indonesian, Vietnamese, etc. which usually carry multiple and rich flavours and compensate the lack of meat in the dish. The restaurant is also thoughtful for various needs of vegetarian diners as some may have to be purely plant meal or avoid stimulating vegetables such as garlic, the menu marked clearly for every dish if it contains onion or garlic, with dairy or alcohol.

a) Pumpkin Soup (came with lunch set) – 7/10

This was a no cream version so it didn’t taste very rich. With some crushed corn inside, I found it quite blend and required a tad of black pepper.

b) I am Fabulous (Vegetarian Burger, $118) – 8.5/10

Among the three choices of burger fillings, the waitress recommended the soy patty for a good imitation of meat burger. The burger bun was with a crispy crust and so was the soy patty. No wonder the most popular dish, I didn’t feel like having a veggie burger at all. Both the deep fried potato and pumpkin wedges were delicious too.

c) You Say Tomato (Rice with Tomato and Assorted Veggies, $108) – 8/10

My friend ordered this vegetable rice and gave rating. The smart use of lemongrass enhanced the flavour of the dish, even the Japanese suishi rice tasted delicious. The thick cuts of tomatoes, lotus root and egg plants enhanced the munching effect.

d) Lemon Ginger Drink – 7.5/10 (came with lunch set), Soy Coffee (came with lunch set) – 7.5/10

A few choices of organic tea bags were offered such as gooseberry, pomegranate or chamomile, etc. My friend picked this hot lemon and ginger drink with a throat soothing effect. For myself, the soy coffee was average.
