....after the truly satisfying seafood dinner at JW's California, my dad ruined the fun by asking the waitress to serve us the birthday cake right in front of me. I could feel that the waitress was equally surprised by his explicit request and wondered how on earth could a person be so unromantic and fun-ruining. It was hard to cheer up again until i saw the cake with the lit candle slowly and carefully served by the helpful waitress. It was later revealed that it was a Spicy Ginger Tea Crunch

....after the truly satisfying seafood dinner at JW's California, my dad ruined the fun by asking the waitress to serve us the birthday cake right in front of me.
I could feel that the waitress was equally surprised by his explicit request and wondered how on earth could a person be so unromantic and fun-ruining.
It was hard to cheer up again until i saw the cake with the lit candle slowly and carefully served by the helpful waitress.

It was later revealed that it was a Spicy Ginger Tea Crunchy Chocolate cake brought from the Mandarin Cake Shop, one of the most famous bakery and cake shop in town which I have always dreamt of going but never had the chance to, as my family members do not have sweet tooth and basically eat no sweet snacks nor cakes, not to mention afternoon teas. Thats how this cake turned out to be my first experience with the famous bakery.

The cake was small, and so beautifully decorated with the shiny chocolate agent that it looked more like a piece of art than an editable cake. After cutting it open into three slices (and packing the rest half back to the box as it was impossible to finish the entire 500g), i could finally examine the different layers in the beautiful and delicate mousse cake.

There were alternative thin layers of chocolate sponge cake in the ginger tea mousse, a thick slab of creamy whitish mousse on top and crunchy chocolate as the crust. First to the tongue was the sweet and runny chocolate shining agent on the exterior of the cake, followed by the silky smooth ginger tea mousse. It was so finely made that the air bubbles was extremely fine and the mousse itself was nowhere near the adjective 'coarse' - it tasted more like chilled pudding rather than mousse, which are usually dry and rough to taste. The thin layers of chocolate sponge cakes had strong cocoa flavours and yet were nowhere dried, and the texture balanced the moisture of the mousse, enriching the texture of the cake. There was also an extra-creamy and extra-smooth mousse which was lighter than the cocoa and tea mousse in the cake, giving it a tint of creamish lightness. Last was the crunchy base which consist of chocolate crispies and two krispies as decors on the cake, adding a distinctive texture to the generally 'soft' cake. Everything is so delicately made and incorporated that i felt sorry destorying the texture by cutting it across with my fork.

There was no need to say that it was certainly the best and the most tasty birthday cake I have ever had. Despite not being a die-hearted fan for chocolate ( i would personally prefer something like cheesecakes or crumbles if i were to choose...but god knows, maybe i would have made the same choice had i been able to), this cake is still excellent in all aspects as everything was so finely made. The cake was flawless in all aspects - especially because it was specially ordered by my mum who had been trying to knock out what i would like to have for my birthday cake.
I sincerely thank my parents for everything i had on my birthday, despite minor let-downs eg. my dad's EXTREMELY unromantic and stupid order for the cake right in front of me, it had been a wonderful night out.

Having the 1st trial of the cake @ the Cake Shop, i am now really motivated and interested at trying out other cakes (incl. the really famous American Cheese cake which was said to be the best in town!). Would be back for sure!
