I'm pretty much floored by how great value it is to dine in with the Eatigo booking. Why is this restuarant not constantly flooded with customers? They deserve to be, even without the discount, just because the Afuri ramen is awesome. I would probably keep returning at least until I manage to try every single thing on their food menu. Today I ordered the most famous, Yuzu Shio Ramen ($98 pre-discount) and Fried Gyoza ($28 pre-discount). The Shio ramen was fresh and light with the signature yuzu
Today I ordered the most famous, Yuzu Shio Ramen ($98 pre-discount) and Fried Gyoza ($28 pre-discount).
The Shio ramen was fresh and light with the signature yuzu tang. Kudos to the chef and wait staff for managing to serve up the bowl with the soup still super hot. It really gives the customer the assurance of an efficient, well-managed establishment, which so far, I've found to be consistent every time I've visited.
The noodles are springy and have a slightly rougher texture than other ramen noodles, which I find a unique twist and adds to my enjoyment of the ramen overall. The shio broth is flavourful but I found that the addition of sansyo, the Japanese pepper available at the table, brought out the flavours even more. Though, I think I prefer the Shoyu broth slightly more than the Shio.
The Fried Gyoza are, in fact, hanetsuki gyoza, which are served with the base and crispy "wings" faced up. The crispy bits are delicate and melt on the tongue. However, when left a bit longer, they become soft and soggy rapidly, and I was so torn between wanting to slurp my hot ramen before it got cold and eating the gyoza before the base became soggy. It was impossible of course, and I ended up sacrificing the gyoza experience in favour of ramen. Ramen always wins.
As I stand up to leave, there are still only a handful of patrons. I really hope this place can still survive, because I truly believe that it has lifted the ramen game in Kowloon to new heights, and it would be such a shame to see that go.
