Walking pass Shelly Street with my friend, we caught sight of Kinship’s brunch menu and decided to give it a try. The weekend brunch menu was quite big, and since we wanted to do a bit of coffee shop hopping afterwards, we ordered two a la carte items to share.First one was this Corned Beef Hash with egg in the frame and caramelized long chilli. It was absolutely fantastic! The potato wedges were nicely fried and tasted like hash brown for real. Love it! The open toast itself was very delicious!

First one was this Corned Beef Hash with egg in the frame and caramelized long chilli. It was absolutely fantastic! The potato wedges were nicely fried and tasted like hash brown for real. Love it! The open toast itself was very delicious! There were two sunny side ups on top, as well as one egg (or two?) hidden inside the bread! Amazing! The corned been and caramelized long chilli made superb toppings. Very delicious indeed!

The second one we got was this BBQ Pork Bennu with beurre noisette hollandaise and rocket salad. The soft boiled eggs were so yummy with hollandaise, which added moisture and taste to the sourdough. The two pieces of BBQ pork underneath the eggs were nicely roasted and nicely flavored, really enjoyable indeed! Make sure you move the pork to the side, so that the sourdough can soak up the tasty egg yolk!
There was nothing we didn’t like about the whole menu, and the price was quite reasonable indeed! Definitely coming back for a nice brunch.

Mr. Whippy Ice-cream! ($78)

Me: ok…
Waitress: Most people order a starter, main and possibly a side. If they’re still hungry they have a dessert.
Me: Great, thank you so much.

With a warm smile and endearing nervousness, it was hard to feel anything but support for our prentice waitress. But the exchange did highlight an unnecessary over-engineering of service delivery that came to typify our evening.

Kinship is the brainchild (and possibly lovechild if the gushing marketing is anything to go by) of Chris Grare (him of Lilly and Bloom) and Arron Rhodes (of Gough’s on Gough fame). My admiration for Gough’s knows no bounds and there was a lot to like about Lilly and Bloom, so expectations were set pretty high.

First impressions were good. Before she’d had a chance to deconstruct the menu, our jolly waitress showed us to one of the better tables that encircle the central cheap seats. The air was filled with sweet meaty smells wafting from the open kitchen and Easy-E expressing his opinions of law enforcement professionals.

Toeing that fashionable line between Art Deco and warehouse industrial, the interior has been artfully, if not intelligently, designed. We were unable to quite forget we were in a big square purpose-built room, which detracted from the atmosphere somewhat. Without two groups of rowdy Brit’s I suspect the atmosphere would have been rather anaemic.

With the waitress’s erudite recommendation in mind, we ordered quickly, and I opted for a starter of beef tartar, main of duck ravioli and reserved judgement on desserts. Mrs A. chose risotto, chicken, a side of mash (as instructed by me as I couldn’t very well order it to accompany my ravioli) and mentally selected the Mr Whippy dessert.

The wine list was well curated and reasonably priced. But there is a lack of consideration with the rest of the drinks menu; there are just five cocktails (one of which is a gin & tonic) and two beers (Asahi and Brooklyn).

As the focaccia had a $68 price tag, we dived into our starters.

My beef tartar arrived via Sumatra; the generous portion of diced cow was accompanied by lime samba, bean salad and roasted peanut sauce. It was all very pleasant, but I was hoping for a hit of lip-numbing spice from the sambal. The dish needed something to contrast the sweet-fresh salad, sweet-soft beef and sweet-sweet sauce, but there was nothing akin to a tabasco karate chop to the back of the throat.

Mrs A’s burnt onion risotto had the consistency of Ambrosia rice pudding. All flavour came courtesy of onions sprinkles and a deep-fried egg yolk beignet. It was all a bit big and a bit dense.

Like many of the dishes on the menu, the risotto seems to have designed around ease of construction. The pre-made rice pudding can be dolloped in the bowl and sprinkled with the crispy shallot, leaving the flash frying of the beignet as the only real manual task. Which makes the shear number of kitchen staff somewhat confusing. There were about ten of the poor buggars trying (and failing) to look busy in full view of the restaurant.

They could have been kept busy polishing a few spoons. Because, in an utterly unnecessary, self-aware gesture, our dirty cutlery was taken from our plates and placed on the table after each course.

My main was not so much a ravioli as it was rich braised duck ragu between two slightly plasticky compact discs of pasta. The duck had the type of rich flavour that speeds up food delivery from plate to mouth by a factor of two. The Lo Soi (according to Google, a stock-based sauce) also had deep Indonesian bent to the flavour and a light ginger cream that sat on top of the CD-sized pasta disc.
The dish was utterly bonkers and – pasta notwithstanding – it worked and worked well.

Mrs A’s. chicken was fantastic. With a crispy skin, a tomato ragu and big nuggets of garlic, the big rustic flavours were pure Provence.

The unapologetically European flavours of the chicken contrasted (clashed) with the Asian fusion of our other dishes. I get it, in these woke times we should all embrace the melting pot of culinary diversity, encouraging interracial union of flavours and cuisines. That’s all well and good until you decide to steal your wife’s food to find that thyme and lemongrass get along with each other as well as a couple of Middle-Eastern States.

Around this time our plates (but not cutlery) were cleared for the second time, the music thinned to power pop rock. As the tinpot speakers struggled to do justice to The Pixies, Mrs. A put in her Mr Whippy order.

It was a big clumsy bowl of type two diabetes. A handful of Cadburys Misshapes and M&S caramel were scattered on top of a small mountain of ice cream.
Truth be told, I enjoyed the bowl of potato more than the ice cream. If given a tablespoon and a choice, it would be the be white cream of vegetable I’d stuff into my mouth. If you’re going to the trouble and expense of installing a Mr Whippy machine, do something with it – create a pudding that’s truly celebratory, not this lazy mess.

Overall, Kinship feels consciously compromised. Like the Flying Elks, Forbidden Ducks and Bread Street Kitchens of the world, whenever a renowned chef trades-down the results usually disappoint. Unlike the Black Sheep’s and Pirata’s of this world – who know how to do affordable occasion dining – Kinship gets too many fundamentals wrong.

Kinship is a labour of love between its proprietors. Unfortunately, it’s a more laboured than loveable. It falls between a few too many stools and in a city of distinctive restaurants, it simply doesn’t feel unique enough.

This is a new restaurant opposite the M&S near the mid-levels escalator. This building seems to be new as well and I’m excited to see what new restaurants will open here.

We tried many dishes: the beef tartare, burnt onion risotto, roasted spring chicken, brussel sprouts, cauliflower, creme brulee and mr. whippy ice cream.

The beef tartare tasted light and fresh compared to the other dishes. The grass fed beef was good. Next, the burnt onion risotto was very flavourful. I liked the burnt onion taste with the onsen egg, a combination I never had before. The dish is also very instagram-worthy. I would prefer if there were a bit more rice so it would be less wet. The risotto was a bit salty.

Onto the mains. There was some gnocci and pancetta under the spring chicken which I thought complemented each other very well textually. The tomato ragu and pesto was a bit salty but the chicken was good.

The cauliflower was big. However I didn’t think it was good enough to cost $188. I would skip this and only get the ponzu brussel side dish.

For dessert, I loved Mr. Whippy (who doesn’t like soft serve?) it tasted like childhood. The ice cream was not too milky so it went well with the heavier chocolate bits and caramel sauce.

I thought the creme brulee was too heavy and too sour (though I usually like sour food). I was quite full and couldn’t finish it. I really want to try the chocolate cake next time.

Overall some of the dishes were a bit too salty, which I think is common in many restaurants in Hong Kong. Portions were quite good though and I enjoyed the hearty meal!

Kinship is a collaboration between one former chef from Gough on Gough and one from Lily & Bloom, promising a new take on modern Anglo-American cuisine.  Located on Shelley Street right next to Ninety’s, it’s a relatively small space that they’ve chosen to decorate similarly to every other restaurant opened in 2018-19;  warm lighting, globe type ceiling lamps, slightly industrial, with wood accents everywhere. Don’t get me wrong, it’s pleasant, but it's getting boring.

The one real problem i had with the setting was that they’ve crammed too many tables in – I heard every word of conversation from both tables around us. Given the timing of our meal (during the 2019 Summer HK protests), it was hard not to get distracted by the discussions, and just generally, you'd expect a bit more privacy for dinner in this kind of restaurant. The service is good, though a bit… how do I describe it… inauthentic? They kept asking how the food was, and when I did tell them what I thought about the duck ravioli (not a fan), it was met with shock and some unpracticed platitudes about how they’d tell the chef. They’re trying I suppose.

Anyway, on to the food!

Can i give a shout out for a glass of wine that's less than 100 HKD? In a city with no import tax on wine, the amount restaurants here charge for a normal glass of wine is actually criminal. If your bottles are too expensive, then carry cheaper ones; if the bottles are cheap and you're still charging $100/glass... god save you. Many restaurants' cheapest wines are lower quality than the every-day drinking wines you can find at 150$ RETAIL. They're just trying to  make up for rental costs, and I'm not particularly interested in helping. Anyway, thank you to Kinship for pricing some glasses of wine at the still-high-for-almost-any-other-city-but-great-for-HK price of $78, because what's a meal without at least a bit of wine?

Here’s what we ate:

A  smooth, rich liver mousse that even non-pate people would enjoy. Interesting choice to serve it with an oat cookie, which my friend loved, finishing the remaining half even after the mousse was gone. The re-hydrated raisin salad was a cool touch – we couldn’t figure out what fruit it was at first: however it's done, re-hydration turns the raisins into tiny, juicy yet strangely firm grapes. The juicy sweetness goes well with the crunchy/slightly sweet cookie and salty pate – nothing revolutionary but unquestionably tasty.

The most memorable dish of the night for me – house-cured smoked salmon, served with a fabulous (and picturesque!) chili-curry sauce, and a jicama coleslaw. The salmon alone is quite salty (though it’s still tasty in small bites) – however eaten together with the chili sauce and chicory, and the flavour really blooms. The saltiness is offset by the cool jicama, and the slight spice from the chili brings out the depth of the curing. Just a great dish, and not a typical combination

Burnt Onion Risotto

Okay to be totally fair, I think my expectations were too high. It’s kind of billed as one of their specialties, and they offer a full-size version of this for 268, which could easily have fed 4 people. In the end, it’s a well-cooked risotto with a tasty sprinkling of burnt onions, and a breaded and deep fried onsen egg. It’s nothing more or less than that. The onsen egg is a bit gratuitous, not really complementing the dish (though of course onsen eggs rarely detract from anything), and the rest is what you’d expect. I’d say it's worth trying, but don’t expect the world

Duck Ravioli

The only true failure of the night – from this picture, it looks like a typical ravioli with a perhaps pesto cream sauce - looks great. Underneath sadly, it’s a mess of caramelized duck that crosses into cloying sweetness, destroying any balance in this dish. No matter how you eat it, it’s just too much over-sweetened duck - nothing of the ravioli comes through at all. It’s not that big but we couldn’t even finish it.

Almost my perfect dish – the sauce is a combination of pesto, gnocchi, pancetta and a thick tomato base. Incredibly rich deep flavours, with pillowy gnocci to sop it all up. If they had just served this combination as a pasta dish, I would have ordered it directly. The chicken itself is nicely cooked and juicy but takes a backseat to the incredible sauce. One note, our chicken had parts that were extremely salty– likely uneven seasoning at the end, as it was fine with the skin removed.

Lemon Crème Brulee

Tasty, and loved the lemon accents in the garnish, whipped cream and crème brulee.  The texture FYI, is more of a thickened mousse than a crème custard, if that makes sense

Overall, I like Kinship. In the mid-high end range of HK dining, i expect strong execution at a minimum, with some memorable originality. Apart from the duck ravioli and weirdly salted chicken, the execution was good (that pancetta and gnocchi wow), and there were enough creative flourishes (salmon with chili curry?) to make the meal both vivid and delicious. For the two of us with 3 appetizers, two mains, dessert and a glass of wine, it came out to just under $1100. FYI, there is a family meal option for 488++ pp, which is basically a tasting menu selected by the chefs, and comes out to about the same for two people. Kinship is recommended for basically any occasion where intimacy isn't required; celebrations, casual get-togethers, company meals etc... and if they sort out their tables, date night would work too. Definitely near the top of my new-openings list.

The brunch costs $388 per person, with starter , main and desserts. Not only the food choice is limited, with only 2 main to pick, the taste is not particular impressive. And drinks is not included with this price. The portion of desserts are very small, ridiculously small. We do not recommend going to this restaurant. It is overly priced with its food quality and portion. How can 4 people share such a tiny piece of tart?!s

Service at Kinship was great. The food were AMAZING (we ordered the chef recommended courses) with the fried brussel sprouts being my favourite. The price is very reasonable as well. Special credit is given to Chef Aaron who thoughtfully wrote my husband and I a heartwarming card for our anniversary I will definitely visit again with friends and family, and recommend this restaurant to those who are looking for great food with chill and relax vibe.

I read and heard mix reviews about kinship before sitting down for dinner last night.  We decided to try for ourselves.   The dishes we ordered were sensational. I even have food high after indulging in the duck ravioli and seafood stew.  Desserts were divine. However, the bean salad was unexciting.   Overall food was fabulous, the only thing I find distracting were the server helicopteringover us throughout the whole meal.  We were the first patrons to arrive at 6pm,     We were given 2 hrs win

We like to enjoy our date night without that invading and rushed ambiance.  As soon as we took the last bite off any plates, the server
was so eager to remove the plate.  I even had to stop the server at some point, the food is not done on the plate yet.
Is like having lunch at some fast food in central during peak time. We left at 7.30pm.  Did not enjoy the rushed service at all.
Kind of spoiled my mood by the end of the meal.  Having said that, food was fabulous.
