Location: Newly refurbished building opposite Hopewell Centre. 1 restaurant on each floor. Variety of cuisines avail at QRE Plaza.
Parking: 6 hours free at Hopewell Centre or Wu Chung Building.
Ambience: Small romantic restaurant with approx 12 tables covered in white tablecloths underneath and smaller blue tablecloth on top. Ideal for private parties. TV on each end of the rectangular dining room was turned off which was good or else it would feel like dining in Fa Yuen Restaurant or Steak Expert.
Music: Medium to fast beat English pop and classics e.g. Justin Timberlake, The Bangles.
Guests: We had a table of 5. Another table of 6 (3 couples mid-40yo) sat next to us. Others were young office couples. Less than half full on Tuesday night.
Menu: Some of the a-la-carte menu is extremely cheap e.g. Caesar Salad $38 and Chocolate Lava $38. Mains like pasta and steak are average price $100+ (cheaper than the likes of Outback, Tony Romas, Ruby Tuesday, Dan Ryans). Variety of oysters $30. Weekday set lunch $88. Foie gras & steak set dinner $228. Foie gras, lobster & steak set dinner $268.
Comment: Waitress informed we can use both coupons and order up to 12 rock oysters ($100 per half dozen with coupon). Complimentary bottle of wine was a choice of French white or Chilean red. We opted Chilean but they ran out and received Spanish red instead. Food was served slow with breaks in between which is how i like it, but it's probably too slow for Hong Kongers. Everything we had tasted fine except for terrible "soda" steak.
Conclusion: 4* - extremely good value for money. We had 6 courses and a bottle of wine for under $200 per head.
Total bill: $956 (5 set dinners, 6 oysters, 1 bottle of wine)
Spanish red wine (3* drinkable)
Rock oysters with lemon wedge and salsa dip (5* small and fresh)
Lobster bisque & bread roll with vinegarette and olive oil dip (4* tasty like it's from the can but with no lobster pieces)
Prosciuto & egg tartare on french bread (4*)
Foie gras & steak with pasta (4* foie gras - good size. 1* steak - huge portion but tasteless as i suspect it's soaked in bicarb soda so that the chuck-like meat is chewable, with cafe de coral hong kong style gravy. 5* pasta - al dente with hint of herb taste.)
Chocolate volcano & ice cream (5* warm with lots of chocolate lava)
Coffee (5* strong italian with crema on top)
Return? Probably not. Prefer La Fourchette @ Pacific Place which serves $169 for 2 courses or $229 for 3 courses.
Recommend? Yes if you're a local, work/live in wanchai, or have a coupon. No if you're an expat, ABC, have lived overseas, or got a refined taste for steak.
