I came here because I watched the YouTube video about this shop and heard that the 清湯牛腩 here is really good. Although I’m a big fan of 群記清湯腩, I thought I should give this place a try seeing that people seemed to prefer this place to the other place.I only ordered the beef brisket noodles soup. Firstly, the meat texture was different to that of 群記, it was more “爽” and I suppose this chewiness is due to the fact that they ice the beef brisket right when it is cooked so as to not loose texture as it stays in the pot later on. I personally quite liked the beef selection here but if one wants really fatty or other part of the beef you won’t get it here unlike in 群記.
Regarding the soup, it’s pretty clear, not as concentrated as the other place but not bad at all. They also have pieces of vegetables in the noodle soup so that’s more balanced than 群記. I liked the soup in 群記 a little bit more because personally I like it more concentrated but people have different taste buds and may defer in their opinions.
Price and ambiance wise is quite a contrast to 群記. Here is only $35 as compared to $52 or up to $58 in 群記. The shop is also more spacious and won’t feel cramped here which is quite unlike that of 群記.
Personally although I still prefer the 爽腩in 群記 a little bit more, I’m open to dining here more often simply because of the price, quality and ambiance. I also noticed that since this place opening up, 群記 hadn’t been increasing their prices as absurdly as it had been the past few years so that is a big plus. Although I must say the standard in 群記 has deteriorated slightly in that the soup isn’t as concentrated as it used to be and it’s portion has shrunk since I first ate there 10 years ago. So maybe I’ll be converted to this place in the near future.
