Summary: 2020 has been a nightmare, but at least we get another good pizza place in Central. Great crust and delicious, generous toppings make a terrific pizza, even if La Camionetta's tomato sauce is oddly thick and they overdo it with herbs. Check it out when you can.La Camionetta just opened last month on Elgin street across from the Sahara Mezz Bar. As it's still in soft opening the menu is extremely limited (it still says pick up only!). It's tiny, with space inside for maybe 10, and a bit
La Camionetta just opened last month on Elgin street across from the Sahara Mezz Bar. As it's still in soft opening the menu is extremely limited (it still says pick up only!). It's tiny, with space inside for maybe 10, and a bit more space on the street.
Here are the menus
As you can see, the pizzas are very reasonable, with the most expensive pie at HKD 178 and most below HKD 140. Drinks are also decently priced
We tried the quattro stagioni pie, and loved the quality ingredients they add in abundance, especially those tasty Italian olives.
The crust is terrific for me, soft and doughy inside, but still crisp enough to support the pie when you pick it up. Because of how generous the toppings are, it doesn't hold up long, but that's a good problem to have. The flavors are nicely balanced, without overdoing the cheese or tomato. A great pie.
I did have one comment for them - there seems to be tiny specks of stuff in every bite you take. In the picture below i tried to show it - they sprinkle an herb mix of, i suppose, oregano, rosemary, basil and others all over the pie. This is usually a great thing (i love oregano on pizza), but its overdone, messing up the texture of the pizza by adding distracting grit to every bite. Adding to this is their choice to use a chunky tomato paste (pic in the insert), rather than a smooth sauce; it's still tasty, but the texture adds to all the small bits on the pizza. I'd recommend they serve the herbs on the side, or at least remove the tougher herbs from the mix like rosemary.
One more needed shout-out is for their incredible homemade garlic/rosemary/bay leaf infused olive oil. I usually dip good pizza crust with EV olive oil, but this is the best version of infused olive oil I can remember. My friend liked it so much she directly drizzled (read: poured) it over the cheese. Make sure you say yes when they offer this, and if they don't, request it!
Overall, I spent some time being nitpickey above, but the bottom line is that La Camionetta makes fantastic pies for great prices. I love that they are so food-focused, rather than emulating the places that pass for restaurants in that area, i.e. shisha and ambiance (or what passes for it) first and only. I look forward to seeing their full opening menu, and i recommend you try it - just don't go with big groups and ask for that extra olive oil!
Proud to add it to my favorite pizza in HK list (in no order)
