This is our second attempt at eating here. The first time, we were deterred by the 45min+ wait. This time, after hearing about the 30min+ wait (at 2pm on a Sunday!), we decided to order to-go and took the food down the street to the nearby park to enjoy the sun.
If you can handle the wait, what makes this place stand out is that the dim sum isn't loaded with salt or MSG, allowing you to taste the real flavor of the ingredients and not leaving you thirsty afterwards. However, for those used to other dim sum places, it may seem that the dishes aren't as flavorful.
6 dishes for 2 people came to just under HKD 100 and left us satisfied, but not particularly full. The portions aren't huge, but good value for the price. 2 people can consider ordering 8 dishes if you're hungry (fewer if you get rice)
义燒焗餐包 (BBQ Pork-filled Dinner Rolls) - Ok. Roll was excellent, filling wasn't too sweet, but had very little BBQ pork.
菜苗餃 (Dumping with Greens and Shrimp) - Excellent. Full of green vegetables and plump shrimp.
燒賣 (Shiu Mai) - Very Good. Made with chunks of lean pork (no fatty/gristle bits)
咖喱鮮魷魚 (Curried Squid) - Very good. Light curry flavor without being overpowering or too salty. The squid had excellent texture.
雞絲滑粉卷 (Chicken wrapped in rice roll) - Excellent. Not a particularly common dish. A bit like a steamed spring roll. Chicken and vegetables wrapped in a rice flour sheet. The wrapping was just the right thickness and lots of filling.
馬拉糕 (Ma la gou) - Excellent. Decent size portion. Not too sweet or dry.
This place gives the original Tim Ho Wan some serious competition (and the seating isn't as cramped). Will definitely come by again if I'm in the area.
