Having spent most of the day walking 15km through the northern part of Plover Cove Country Park and beyond, up to the pier at Sam A Wan,; it's pretty safe to say I had quite an appetite, by the time I met my dining companion in Tai Po Market Station. Don't worry, I had showered and changed after the day's exertions...
In a few minutes we arrived at Doo Lee Man Vegetarian - approximately 9pm - and were instantly seated in one of the six booths which run down each side of the restaurant. They each seat four people and there's two large tables in between them, which seat six to eight people each: when the restaurant is busy, you may have to share the large tables with others. As you may have guessed by the name, Doo Lee Man is a (Buddhist) vegetarian restaurant, very much in the same style of your usual Hong Kong cafe / diner. As seems to be the fashion with such places, a lot of the dishes on the menu offer "fake" versions of a wide variety of Chinese dishes, mostly with steamed rice, although there are noodle options as well. I read elsewhere that the English version of the menu is out of date and it would probably serve you well to have a Cantonese speaker with you, although the staff (and other diners!) were very friendly and helpful.
After pouring a cup of tea, from the jug which was already on our table, we ordered and were instantly brought a bowl of soup each.
Soup - A delicious, sweet potato, peanut, bean and vegetable soup. Thick, rich and very tasty.
We then shared two main dishes;
Aubergines - I think they were steamed, then served on cabbage leaves, with a bowl of steamed rice. They had good texture and flavour, with or without the optional hot sauce which was given to us by the lady who was serving.
Fake Beef Cow Mien - Some kind of vegetable protein, made to look and taste like strips of beef, served with ribbon noodles, chopped cabbage and bean sprouts. This was absolutely delicious: beautiful smoky flavours and a good mixture of complimentary textures. Yummy.
And, we were stuffed: a very satisfying meal, for an extremely reasonable HK$65 for the both of us. I'll definitely return, as I wish to sample their Curried Potatoes, which I have since heard about...
