We visited Santouka on a busy Friday night for some of their miso ramen and received a boring, tasteless bowl of noodles.
We arrived and were seated quickly by a pretty disinterested server. That seemed to be the theme of the attitude that carried throughout the whole staff. After looking through the menu, we opted for a miso ramen and a spicy miso ramen.
First point of irritation: you have to pay extra for an egg. WHAT?? Really?? Anyway, we did that and the next annoying thing happened straight away. It came on a seperate dish, uncut, about 5 minutes before the noodles did. So basically, we sat there, no ramen and a whole rapidly cooling egg each. We totally expected the egg to be cut and in the ramen. It was just weird.
Anyway, the ramen finally came and after cutting the egg with chopsticks and placing it in the soup, we tucked in.
The soup tasted of nothing. To my mind, the broth is the most important part of ramen. It needs to be delicious and rich. A good miso ramen is like a warm cuddle on a frosty day (it does come from Sapporo!). This was like being splashed with a tepid bucket of water. NO FLAVOUR. I had the spicy one, and it was not spicy at all.
The nooldes themselves had a nice texture - basically the only good point. The pork fell apart and had no integrity. It was also a lonely solitary slice that looked pretty sad in its tasteless bath.
The ramen here is rubbish. Don't bother.
