A day off and we decided to have lunch in Central with boyfriend. He let me choose and I thought ... would he be ok with vegetarian? You see, he hates eating vegetables. When I mentioned there was new vegetarian place I wanted to try for lunch, he scowled a bit but as I promised we'd have hot pot tonight, he agreed.Emerald is located in the M88 Building in Central. Emerald is located in the M88 Building in Central. A rather narrow restaurant, with tables on one side and a bar like area on the other. The place began to fill quickly so it's a good thing we arrived early.
The plates were beautiful. I rarely make note of the dinnerware but these were gorgeous.
Menu is in English and Chinese. They seem to focus on a mix of French and Asian influenced food. They offer a la carte.
But if you can't decide they offer lunch set options for two people or one. Sets include an appetizer, soup and main with optional upgrades for dessert and coffee or tea. We decided to try the two people lunch set ($428).
For the appetizer, we decided to get both as there were two options.
The first appetizer was Stir Glass Noodle with Vegetarian Shark Fin with a Sesame and Pomelo sauce. You can choose the Sichuan sauce but I can't handle spicy food so we opted for this sauce instead. I loved the firm chewiness of the glass noodles noodles. The salty sesame sauce was balanced out with the tart pomelo sauce. The plating was so pretty with the delicate use of edible flowers.
The other appetizer we shared was Japanese Kelp Angel Hair with Olive Oil Caviar. This was beautiful to look at and clever as the olive oil caviar melted away easily, coating the angel hair pasta so it would get that smooth shiny gleam against the furikake like seasoning. The angel hair was al dente and everything was decorated with edible flowers.
The set includes soup so we chose one of each.
This is the Spanish Tomato and Bell Pepper Soup. It came with a very crisp slice of bread. Perfect for literally soaking it into your soup. The soup had a rich tomato taste that had a slight smokiness from the charring of the bell peppers, making it more interesting than the usual tomato soup.
The other soup was the Porcini Mushroom Hot and Sour Soup. This was very very spicy. Even boyfriend who can handle spicy found it really spicy. They definitely don't hold back on flavor. There were plenty of mushrooms to give that added texture to the soup.
The set for two includes a choice of three mains. I loved how they separated the mains into two plates instead of one big plate where we then picked it apart. It made for a much nicer display of the food.
The first main was the Sichuan Fried Cauliflower and French Beans. The beans were crisp. Eveything was well seasoned. The cauliflower really soaked up the chili peppes so you get that heat just hit you. There were cashew nuts, making this a very classic Chinese style dish. I loved how they presented it in a mini iron pot.
The second main was Rose Barbeque Pork. Or vegetarian char siu. I love char siu and this was a really good vegetarian interpretation of it. But most places that do vegetarian char siu, it's soggy or just firmed up wheat gluten. But here they did that extra step of charring it so the skin was crispy like actual char siu. It left me wanting more. It came with a very sweet strawberry rose sauce for dipping and it was sprinkled with pistachio.
The third main was Portobello Risotto. This basically filled you up. The risotto was nicely cooked and well seasoned. The Portobello mushroom was juicy. But the most interesting item was the vegan cheese. It had the same texture and taste as Parmesan! It was fantastic. Usually, I'm not a fan of vegan cheese, but this was different. This tasted like cheese.
We still had room for dessert so added $30 for it. This is the Deep Fried Oat Milk. It came with a tart passion fruit curd and fresh berries.
The vegan version of the classic Chinese deep fried milk, this place used oat milk. The texture and taste was sweet and smooth. It was piping hot as well. The outside was so crispy and upon asking what it was, we were informed it was bread crumbs shaped like rice. A perfect end to a meal.
The food was delicious and well seasoned. Flavors were well partnered so nothing felt out of place. Plating was beautiful. It had a more fine dining type of atmosphere with relation to the plating and service. Even boyfriend who's a proud carnivore thought it was delicious and would be fine with coming back.
