As I live in Repulse Bay, I've been to MEEN umteen times since it set up shop last year given its fair prices and the lack of an alternative in the area. While excellent restaurants are sprawling across the beach side of the Pulse, MEEN is a great option to consider with its exhaustive menu--from stir-fry rice noodles and wonton soup to meaty dishes and veggies cooked in clay pots, you'll definitely find something that tickles your fancy. While excellent restaurants are sprawling across the beach side of the Pulse, MEEN is a great option to consider with its exhaustive menu--from stir-fry rice noodles and wonton soup to meaty dishes and veggies cooked in clay pots, you'll definitely find something that tickles your fancy. Service is very hectic on weekends and a big guy sitting at the cashier counter can get very grouchy and rude. If you can afford to come during the week, that would make a huge difference as there's barely anyone on weekday nights (excluding Fridays). Lunch-times during weekends could mean over an hour of waiting time under the scorching sun. Reservations are accepted, but the staff might tell you that your table is not guaranteed even if you've made a booking (!).

The food served at MEEN reminds me of my China-town meals in England (the better ones, of course)--with the chefs always erring slightly on the sweeter and greasier side to cater to westerners. There's also a cosmopolitan twang to the place. On a typical weekday night, you might see a casual tourist, a retired expat, and a family who live in the neighborhood, all sitting quietly; the interior is a modern, elegant interpretation of old-fashioned Hong Kong cafes, made all the more timeless by the soft orange lighting.

Recommended dishes:
 Any congee (from someone who really dislikes congee!), chicken (in clay pot), eggplant (in clay pot), wonton (prawn) soup noodles, stir-fry rice noodles with beef

This one is a classic. It's one of the strongest dishes packed with so much flavor and texture. It's a huge plate, so you can share between two.

One of the dishes I often go with when I can't be bothered to read the menu--this is eight bouncy prawn wontons in a delicious bowl of hot, clear broth.

The congee is so fluffy and tasty that it's addictive! I don't like the beef too much though, because it's way too tender (probably took a week-long bath in baking powder).

Very nice chicken pot - generous portion, too. It comes so sizzling hot that you'd need to let it breathe for five minutes.

raised tofu was a bit of a disappointment; while the brown sauce was tasty, the tofu didn't soak up much of it, leaving it slightly tasteless. I liked that the dish came with a generous helping of pak choy though.

It was the worst experience we had at a restaurant and totally ruined our experience at the pulse! The restaurant was in complete choas and the service was obnoxious! There's a woman sitting at a 8 person table, waiting for a bill for at least 20 mins without any kind of response from the waiters. Then next to her was an empty table with dirty dishes on it. We tried to ask politely whether we can have the table and the boss just yelled "WAIT!!!" at us without indicating anything. Then we sat dow

Then we sat down for 5 mins and he suddenly pointed at us and yelled "your table is taken! You have to take a number!" BUT there wad no sign of any numbering system and nobody else knew about it! It seems the boss hates all the customers and want all of them to leave asap. It was really a horrible experience!

今日中午幾個朋友來吃飯,叫左雞鵝飯、叉燒手拉布腸、炸兩腸、蒸肉餅、蝦多士同飲品。雞鵝飯、叉燒味道幾好,叉燒松軟多汁唔錯。蒸肉餅都算OK啦。手拉布腸又硬又韌又多油,炸兩腸油條就脆,D粉皮一樣好、、個炸醬撈面一樣系多油,面唔爽仲有怪味,醬又鹹又酸,湯重味精到呢燒喉,碗下火衰到冇人有,一看就知打粉漿,好似食茨汁。檸茶冇味,橙汁就新鮮。下次一定唔食粥面手拉布腸。

Taking advantage of the oceanfront property, most restaurants on level 1 offers a semi al fresco dining experience with an open dining space and Meen & Rice was not exception. The only downside will be the heat in the summer and the occasional critter flying around. The decor was whimsical with a menu of dishes on the wall like the ones you'd find in real dai pai dongs along with noodle strainers hanging from the ceiling but the rest of the restaurant was neat and simple - retro and modern at the same time.

Unlike most Chinese shops, they serve water here instead of tea but at least you get to drink it out of Loveramics cups.

Stewed Beef Brisket Noodle ($55) - the portion was a bit smaller than expected but the broth which is the soul of any noodle soup was amazingly flavorful with rich beefy flavors! The beef brisket was soft and easy to chow through while the egg noodles were springy with a slight chewy mouthfeel.

Barbecued Pork and Roast Goose Rice ($88) - as a big Cantonese barbecue fan, I had to try their barbecued items so I got a barbecued pork and roast goose rice plate to try. The char siu was above average with a sweet honey glaze and equal portions of fatty and lean meat but it's missing the charcoal aroma from my favorite hole-in-the-wall shop in Chai Wan. The roast goose was very decent as well with juicy flavors but I wish the skin could have been crispier.

Deep-fried Shrimp Toast ($78) - this shrimp toast was out of this world! It was the best that I've had as the toast was light and crispy but not oily at all while carefully balancing the delicate flavors of the shrimp as they have used a whole shrimp here instead of shrimp paste. I'd go back just to have this again!

Verdict - while the prices are expectedly higher than what you will find at shops in the main part of the city, it's not obscenely unreasonable either - I think it's fair given the location, decor, hygiene and quality of food. Definitely for the residents of southside, it's a great place to get your Chinese comfort food fix nearby and I can't wait to go back to try more of their dishes!
