Dragon Boat Festival which falls on 5 May of Chinese lunar calendar . We eats Chinese Stick Rice Dumplings as traditional festival food. This year, my family tried “Royal Assorted Rice Dumpling Set” of Saint Honore Cake Shop. This set included one Deluxe Rice Dumpling with Scallop and Chinese Ham 元貝金腿裹蒸糉which is the biggest (445g), one with Roasted Pork & Salty Egg Yolk極品家鄉糉 (157g), two Osmanthus Red Bean paste rice dumplings桂花紅荳糉 (in total 160g), two Jiang Nan deluxe rice dumplings 江南極品糉(in total 290g) and two Red Bean paste sweetened rice dumplings 鹼水豆沙糉(in total 150g).
The most flavorful was the biggest one, Deluxe Rice Dumpling with Scallop and Chinese Ham which had quite much stuffing. Except for the glutinous rice, there were green bean, pork, salted egg yolk, one number of dried scallop, lotus seeds, mushroom, Chinese cured ham, and various spices. For me, a little bit more salty would be more tasty.
The next flavourful was osmanthus red bean paste rice dumpling. There was whole red bean mixed with glutinous rice with some red bean paste inside. Sweetness and red bean paste were in optimum while osmanthus flavour may be not strong enough.
The Jiang Nan deluxe rice dumplings was in dark brown so I supposed the flavour should be quite attractive. In my contrast, salty flavour seemed to be not enough. Though there were pork, peanut, a few strings of Chinese cured ham and salty egg yolk, the flavour was a bit disappointed.
As for the rice dumpling with roasted pork& salty egg yolk, the stuffing consisted of peanuts, green beans and lotus seeds. Same as Jiang Nan one, not salty enough to please my palate.
Finally, as I dislike the chemical flavour of sweetened rice dumplings, I did not like red bean paste sweetened rice dumplings of of Saint Honore Cake Shop, too. However, there was no complaint to sweetness and flavour of red bean. Therefore, if you don’t mind something like chemical flavour of sweetened rice dumplings, this is your thing.
In overall, I satisfied with the quality and portion of the stuffing while the flavour still had room for improvement. Once was enough for me as the price of these rice dumplings was not cheap at all.
