I've made a recent commitment to go to more Chinese restaurants in HK, so when the weekend rolled around, we headed to Dim Sum Square, which is only a short walk from my apartment. They had one thing on the menu that I'd never seen before: a rice noodle roll with a spring roll inside it. I had to order it for novelty alone, but it wound up being the best thing we got, and I highly recommend it. The spring roll inside was crispy and full of green onion and cilantro, and the sauce it came with had a very pleasing flavor. A+
Another novelty-- I'd never had cha siu bao like this. The inside was pretty standard, though very good quality, with big tender chunks of pork. But the outside was crispier than usual. I want to compare it to an American biscuit. Anyway, one of the best pork buns I've ever had. A
I always gotta get dumplings at dim sum. Normally they disappoint, usually on account of flavourlessness. These ones, although they pretty much had just shrimp inside, were reasonably tasty. B
We also had glutinous rice in a lotus leaf (not pictured). It was a pretty good rendition, but I'll admit that I didn't eat that much of it because by the time I got to it, I was pretty stuffed, and I had to save room for that amazing rice paper roll.
On the whole, I think Dim Sum Square was excellent. The people working there seemed friendly. About a quarter of the clientele were Westerners, so I didn't feel out of place. And the food's some of the best dim sum I've had, though that could just be on account of my own limited experience. The entire meal was only $101-- one of the cheapest brunches I've had in a while. A
Extremely good dim sum at this small place in Sheung Wan! We ordered the baked char siew buns, quite different from the usual kind because the pastry is a bit flaky and slightly sweet! This makes a good counterpoint to the very savory char siew filling. The har gao and the shiu mai were also very good, very fresh shrimp and the wrapper for the har gao was not too thick.
