My boss brought us to this place for 開年飯. I didn't take any photos so I could only recap in words.
I had been here a few times before since I started working. I recalled this place served reasonably good food in affordable prices. Membership was required but I heard that only $100 was charged to renew your membership every year. Sounds like a good deal!
We tried quite a number of dishes:
1) Appetizers:
燻蛋: the half-boiled egg yolk tasted really good in a perfect flowing texture! It didn't give a strong smoked flavour though.
馬蘭頭: normal
醉豬手: very strong in alcohol and it was very crispy, but I personally preferred tender pork feet more than crispy ones.
2) 黃金蝦: loads of salted eggs indeed and it smelt really good. I finished the whole thing including the crispy shells.
3) 沙錐魚: This dish was surprisingly good. The fish was cooked in two styles, stir-frying and deep-frying. Both styles were good.
4) 沙窩雲吞雞: clear soup. But the dumpling was just so-so and the boiled chicken was too rough to eat.
5) There was a dish of duck cooked with lots of leek which I forgot the name. The duck tasted ok and it was not so rough. There were loads of leek. However, this dish wasn't particularly good and there was quite a lot of leftover, maybe because there was too much sauce.
6) 小棠菜&竹荀: normal
7) 家常餅: It was crispy on the outside with loads of spring onions in the inside, also fully covered by sesame. It smelt pretty good and wasn't too oily.
8) 什錦鍋巴: The 鍋巴 was a bit crispy only. I thought it could be even more crispy (was I too demanding?). I didn't really liked the accompanying soup. It was just like some thick soup with 四季豆, 竹笙 , 草菇 and 肉片 etc which tasted clear & healthy but didn't seem to go along well with the 鍋巴.
9) 鍋貼: They were huge! They were fried to the right degree with crispy wrap yet still with sufficient soup inside.
10) 桂花芝麻湯圓: So interesting to see that the rice balls came in a transparent soup. It gave a slight smell of 桂花. I thought the smell could be even stronger. The rice balls were very smooth and were stuffed of black sesame which was flowing out of the rice balls when you chewed it by half. Quite a good dessert and not overly filling.
I was very full afterwards and there was still leftover duck, 家常餅, 鍋巴 and 鍋貼. I didn't know the bill so couldn't comment on the value for money, yet the food itself did justify a revisit some time later.
