Don't know where to start in terms of how bad the food is at this restaurant. We dined here with high hopes and were let down badly. The meal began with the buffalo mozzarella which tasted store bought. We continued onto the squid dish which tasted utterly horrible. The meal began with the buffalo mozzarella which tasted store bought. We continued onto the squid dish which tasted utterly horrible. It had a fishy smell and mushy texture, not fresh at all.

Next was some sort of mini pizza which resembled baked cardboard. I imagine cardboard would taste better. It was just inedible.

We moved onto the rack of lamb. There was no rack whatsoever. There were however, meatless lamb bones stacked on top of each other. We could have gathered enough meat to feed one person from all of the bones.

The piece de resistance was the ribeye steak.  It tasted of pure charcoal. There was absolutely zero beef flavor. I pity the cow that was sacrificed for this dish.

Portion size was dismal at this place. The staff here claims that the dishes are made for sharing. With who, I have no idea, as there is only enough food for one person.

If you want to know what it feels like to get ripped off and leave disappointed and hungry, dine here! Otherwise, stay away from this place!

The restaurant only consisted of 1 long table sitting maybe 30 people and a long narrow table top with bar stools. So it felt rather different when we were first seated as the restaurant was only half full at the time.

There is no menu, only a large chalk board at one end of the room. With the dim lights it was quite impossible to read. So the lady (who was eager and friendly) gave us an ipad with a picture of the chalk board so we can order.

You can choose 8 dishes at $500pp but we prefer to order separately.  The restaurant reviews indicated that their wine list was pretty impressive stocked with mainly boutique Italian producers.  What suprised me was how much a glass cost (well over HKD100 on ave).  The 2 glasses of reds we ordered was very mediocre at best and nowhere near the Chiantis, Brunellos or Amarones that we drink at home on a regular basis.  The waitress then let slip that these boutiques are much cheaper than the more well known producers.  It's  fine to promote your "boutique' wines if they taste on par or better but not when it is sub standard and cost even more than the better known producers.

A bit taken aback when I saw this dish. Tasted worse than it looked. Bland. Nothing Italian about this, like a fake Thai dish.

This was the worst dish. The fish was not fresh (a punishable crime in HK where fresh fish can be bought almost everywhere!), the meat was soft and mushy. Totally lost interest in this.

Can't even remember which one this was. By now, we just wanted to finish the meal and leave (not a usual move for us). Dessert was ok.

As the restaurant started to fill up, the place just felt so cramped. Not a nice feeling squashed on both sides by strangers. And the noise........

The food was absolutely disappointing. Shocking that the SCMP reviewers rated this place with a "star". For the price they charge, this restaurant would rank at the bottom quartile vs its peers. No way I would recommend this place to anyone, even for half the price.

The concept is like tapas and for people to share dishes, I think this is a brilliant idea so you get to taste many dishes. We didn't book a table and were seated at the bar. Lucky we got there early as the restaurant eventually got full.
The wine list is also very interesting as all the wine are natural wine and I have never tried that before. I had a problem reading the wine lists because is all written in Italian but the waitress explans it very well and clearly. My girlfriend is not a big drinker so I ordered a half bottle, they have quite a lot of choices for half bottles whereas a lot of places have only limited to choose.
We were offered the banquet menu but we feel this would be far too much for us as we had a late lunch so we opted for the a la carte. We had the ricotta and this was amazing! Fluffy light cheese served with homemade sour dough bread. Then we had the lamb ribs, really nice crispy lamb in an orange glazed and the meat just melts in your mouth. We also ordered a pasta dish and the flank steak. The steak was cooked to perfection medium rare and really tender and fresh. My girlfriend ordered the cabbage salad and she enjoyed it very much as I'm not a big salad person. The dishes were small but enough for two people to shared. There's a wow factor with 121BC as the dishes seems very simple and not too complicated but very tasty. Apparently the menu changes weekly and some dishes even change daily.
Unfortunately we didn't have time for dessert as we booked tickets for the cinema. We can't wait for our next visit!

Soooo are we sitting comfortably? As I share this experience with you all, which is on par with nightmare on elm street – minus the red and black jumper and the claws, anyway less of that!
Let me set the scene walking around looking for venue to eat some great food… We stumbled onto a place called “121BC,” seemed nice enough.
Once we sat down we was informed that the menu for that night was etc…etc , being lazy after hard days work we opted for the 8 dishes HKD500 per head. That was the start of slippery slope to hell!
the 1st dish was okay… consisting of cherry tomatoes, cheese kind of like cottage cheese variety and sprinkle of olive oil and olives - harmless and fair.
the 2nd dish wait for it…. Consisted of cherry tomatoes, cheese kind of like cottage cheese variety and sprinkle of olive oil and olives plus melon balls…. Touch of de ja vu… when I asked what was the difference “chi chi exclaimed massive, me still stratching my head inquired to the difference.… wow a different blend of cheese! Sorry but my taste buds cldnt really tell the difference and to be honest I’ve just had tomatoes plus cheese did I want another round that… sigh
So we sat there fingers crossed we wasn’t going to get another round of …. TOMATOES / CHEESE dish!
Next up was lamb burnt to hell caramlised with orange sauce… it was soooooo sour it gave my butt wrinkles… NO joke I think I consumed two bottles of their sparkling mineral water there and then, on the spot!
By now we was joking about the state of the food with the couple next to us, betting who would survive the next round of fear factor…. They got the steak with mascarpone sauce … SERIOUSLY we couldn’t stop laughing as they said it was like eating charcoal..
Our next dish was… that steak too, visibly the couple next to us had the last laugh.
Being lover of steak not much can deter me from a steak! But this even I couldn’t eat it, even if I had washed it thru and cut of the burnt parts.
The couple next to us already complained about the steak and the only good thing they said was the beer – a consolation prize!
We thought they couldn’t do worse with the dessert… right? Afterall the couple next to us just got good old ice cream, oh noooo we was not that lucky we ended up with cardboard tasting biscuit crumbs surrounded by a frozen yoghurt which tasted like !$#%#%!#.
With our taste buds beaten up and left dead, we gave up asked for the bill. The bill came and we saw the mineral water was like HKD110 for two bottles which is reasonable but I was curious to the source since it came in a plain brown bottle.
It seems they make it inhouse they have underwater spring behind the bar… come on I was JOKING they have a machine which makes mineral water so it seems “chi chi,” the manager tells me… COME on wdf, so u put tap water in the machine and hey presto its mineral water… sure and the machine is perrier… what a load of BS.
The best part… we left hungry and out of pocket with the manager saying things wld be bttr next round and give them another go… please it COULDN’T GET WORSE. Sorry to my colleagues, I will listen to yr suggestions… and yr right. And FINALLY realized why it's called “121BC,” reference to period of food before christ… well I am glad this 2014 ad.

Upon seated we weren't given any menus because there are no menus. The only "menu" was a chalkboard with the listed food. It was a bit far and I didn't want to spend time squitting my eyes trying to figure out what to eat, so I went ahead with the 8-course banquet.

The 8-course banquet was $500 per head and was small sharing dishes selected by the chef.
Remember, all dishes are shared between two people.

The first dish we had was green beans tossed with bread crumb and a light creamy cheese (I think it could be goat cheese?). This was amazing! The dressing was spot on and really opened up our appetite. I give this dish a 10/10.

The second dish we had was a lightly battered deep fried vegetable. I couldn't work out what vegetable it was, it tasted a cross between potato and squash. This was amazing too. It wasn't greasy or heavy, the taste was really clean, crisp and light. I would give this 9/10.

The next dish is another vegetable dish. This is pumpkin and red bell peppers. This was ok. Nothing fancy so I wouldn't worry about missing out on this one.

The next dish was squid with tomatoes. The squid was cooked just right but it didnt have much taste to it. The dressing on the squid was too light. I wouldn't order this a second time.

After the squid we enjoyed a cheesy gnocchi with a creamy tomato sauce. This was really homey and delicious. I wished we had more to share. I would give this a 7/10.

The 3rd last dish was a salad. This dressing on this salad was super yummy. It had the sourness from balsamic vinegar but it also a plumy, tangy taste as well. I really enjoyed this salad and would definitely want to order a full serving of it. I give this salad a 10/10.

The last dish was a dessert. If you have a sweet tooth you will love this. The chocolate is rich and heavenly. It was a tad bit too sweet for me, but to share between two people, it was easy to finish it off.

Overall, the food was really delicious. You can tell that the chef really took care with the dressing and ingredient selections when putting the food together. The staff was very friendly and the ambience was nice. However, I was upset I had to sit in a stool for 2hrs when I had made reservation. I would have rather they told me that beforehand so that I was prepared. The room was really small and so every time someone passed, there would definitely be brushing. The banquet, delicious as it may, was just too small. I wouldn't be rushing to go back a second time, if ever.

Suckling Pig

Live Jazz Show!
题外话/补充资料: 「121BC」嚴選食材,與本地天台種植蔬菜的農夫等皆有聯系,促進香港的有機耕作,值得表揚!

I'd always noticed the crowds and sounds of laughter that came from 121BC the few times I happened to walk past Peel Street on a weekend --- and now I know the reason.

The menu at 121BC changes daily, based on what is freshest and in season. Dishes are designed for sharing, and for a party of two like us, we were recommended to order 3-4 dishes. For those interested in trying a wider selection (or simply plagued with indecisiveness), the restaurant also provides an 8-dish "Banquet Menu", which like a Japanese omakase, consists of dishes selected by the chef. We opted for this latter option.

We began the meal with Homemade Ricotta, Asparagus, Peas, Preserved Lemon, which was also served with homemade focaccia. This was a delightfully well balanced dish - the acidity and sourness of the lemon marinade complemented the creamy, smooth ricotta, whilst the asparagus also added crunch to the combination. The soft, slightly seasoned focaccia was also the perfect vessel to transport all this.

This was quickly followed by Roast Parsnip, Goat Cheese, Kale, Raisin. I was initially a bit wary about having another cheese dish so soon, but quickly realised the goat cheese played just a small, albeit important, part in this item. The parsnips definitely stole the spotlight - roasted till a soft consistency, they maintained a natural sweetness, which the saltier flavours of the goat cheese helped elevate. The kale in this dish was prepared in such a way that it was crispy, and added another dimension of texture to the dish.

The last of our "appetiser" dishes was the Octopus, Chickpea, Pepper Olive. We were impressed with how tender the octopus was, and wondered whether it had been perhaps, massaged like the octopus featured in "Jiro Dreams of Sushi". We also liked how the chickpeas were soft, but not mushy.

Moving on to our "main courses", we began with the Caramelised Lamb Ribs, Orange, Caraway. I was secretly hoping this would be included, and I was not disappointed. The lamb had a sweet, crisp exterior finishing (as the name promised) but the meat was still moist and tender, to the extent that it fell off the bone. Although the greens on the side were just an accompaniment, they were still evidently fresh and just very lightly and carefully seasoned. This attention to detail was a theme that carried through the dinner.

Finally, we were served the Roast Suckling Pig and Chicory, Rocket, White Balsamic, Almond, Pear. The roasted suckling pig was another dish I was interested in trying, and it ended up being one of my favourite dishes of the evening. I felt it embodied all the elements of a great roasted suckling pig - crispy crackling, a thin layer of flavourful fat (which you could still chew, given it had not disintegrated into a mushy oily mess) and meat that was juicy and tender. The salad of chicory and rocket was a nice, light companion to the suckling pig, and I was particularly impressed with how sweet and crunchy the almonds were.

Dessert was the Chocolate Tart, Ricotta Cream. The dark chocolate ganache filling was creamy, rich and indulgent - and would surely satisfy the cravings of any chocoholic. The ricotta cream helped lighten the flavour and ensure the chocolate would not become too overwhelming. However, what impressed me most was the pastry - despite the heavy creaminess of the ganache filling, the pastry managed to maintain an individual character of its own, remaining crisp and flaky despite the weight atop it.

The "Banquet Menu" goes for $400 a head, which is truly a bargain in view of the quality and size of the dishes. The service was also excellent and the staff went to great lengths to ensure everyone was comfortable and having a great time.

Eight dishes originally sounded a bit daunting - but when it was over, I was disappointed to see it end! I guess I'll definitely be heading to Peel Street more from now on.

Not at all familiar with the Italian & Scilian wines but Lucian behind the bar recommended a couple for me to try. The homemade ricotta & eggplant was just divine! The gnocchi & beef cheek was delicious. Portions are appetizer size. There in only one long table where everyone shares, otherwise the window sill or bar counter. They go with US style of fixed seating times for the table so book!
