One of the restaurants at Stanley that we have always wanted to try, so away from the New Year’s Eve crowd, we thought we would give it a shot.
To begin our experience, we had been presented with a misleading, yet awfully written menu. There is a choice of a 3-Course or 4-course menu. Foie Gras or Soup; Crab Pasta; Lamb or Steak & Prawns or Salmon; Truffle Chocolate Cake (exact Chinese translation on the menu: 黑菘露蛋糕). We have chosen the 3-course with soup and the Lamb, but we only discover after the 2nd course that dessert is a must have course whether 3 or 4 courses. It is definitely the first that we have experience, not expecting to have dessert as it is not often that we find good quality pastries in a free standing restaurant. Since there isn’t much choice, we had no choice but to have the 黑菘露蛋糕, since we have never had 黑菘露in a dessert…
The lobster bisque is just right with a nice creamy foam that is not too greasy. The lamb rack was juicy and done exactly how we wanted with nice side vegetables. The soup was served in a typical ‘Garden Restaurant’ type soup bowl, but we later discovered that the table next to us had their soup served in a fancy taller bowl with at least 50% more content, yet it is of the same set menu.
To top up the missing dish that we thought we would have, we have ordered the Fish and Chips. Apart from the fact that Potato wedges came instead of the ‘Chips’ that is stated on the menu, the food quality has certainly exceeded our expectation. The fish is juicy, batter crispy, good coleslaw. The tartar sauce has got bits of orangey fruits that are not gherkins thought…
Finally, we got to dessert, the 黑菘露蛋糕that we were made to have. It is no more than a layered cake with cream, a chocolate colour sponge, chocolate mouse, and a chocolate coating, and not the non-sense from the waiter that黑菘露is ‘mixed’ with the chocolate…
As far as service is concerned, a loose bunch of men and women with no soul in their work producing consistently bad service. None of them bothered to offer another drink after the glass is emptied and they didn’t even pick the empty glass up until I was half way through the second drink, not to mention the length of time taken for the arrival of the 2nd drink….PS. the restaurant wasn’t even full…. Aren’t they supposed to maximize sale!? Come on, it is New Year’s eve… when else to do it!?
All in all, we have enjoyed the food apart from dessert. But we were let down by the poor service and misleading information provided on the menu. To have paid almost $900 for 2 for such an evening is unacceptable and needless to say ruining our last evening in 2009.
