First come first served seating, so I guess I was lucky I got here early and managed to snag a table with no problem. Chom Chom is a fairly new place that belongs to the same restaurant group as Motorino, which is my BF's absolute favorite pizza place in HK (he goes there at least once a week). Chom Chom is a fairly new place that belongs to the same restaurant group as Motorino, which is my BF's absolute favorite pizza place in HK (he goes there at least once a week). When we found out our favorite server/manager(?) at Motorino had moved over to Chom Chom to help with the start up, we simply had to follow her there! 

Chom Chom absolutely did not disappoint. We didn't order a ton of food, but I enjoyed everything we did order: VFC (Vietnamese Fried Chicken Wings) (must order), Mango and Papaya Salad (great blend of flavors, very fresh, and generous portion of lemongrass beef, making it a very substantial salad), and Cha Ca Hanoi (white sole filet - fresh, healthy, generous portion).  

I also loved the local beer. Our server (the one from Motorino) recommended the 33 for my BF and Saigon for me. Both were awesome and had flavors that are distinct from other beers I've had. 

Service was excellent (no surprise). Also, the space itself is very cool - the restaurant is located on a corner, and there is both indoor and outdoor seating. Large windows and open doors gave the two a seamless feel, which made it feel spacious even though the unit itself is probably not that large. The outdoor tables give the place a very relaxed feel, while the bar in the middle looks very sleek/modern. I liked the clean lines. 

Absolutely will be coming back. So happy Chom Chom opened up in SOHO.

We had the pork skewers, grilled eggplant salad and spring rolls.We liked the skewers and the spring rolls. The skewers came with some rice noodles and veggies, and were delicious when mixed together. The spring rolls were crisp and flavorful without being too oily.The eggplant was not to our liking, though it may have been a matter of taste. It was served as a cold dish.

又是另一清新小吃,煙韌的米紙捲著新鮮的吞拿魚刺身和一些香草,還有XO醬!帶點惹味的辣勁,令吞拿魚刺身變得非凡,旁邊的是一小碗魚露,沾一些可令米卷味覺層次更豐富。

看像普通的越式炸雞翼,實是不平凡的出色!外層炸得鬆脆香酥,雞肉非常之嫩滑無比,少許的蒜茸、莧茜和薄荷令雞翼的香氣昇華,我更喜歡滴一點青檸汁,清新的青檸酸勁抵消了炸雞翼的油膩感。

吃了這麼多肉類與味濃的,最後是時候清清喉嚨,我平時吃晚飯的尾聲多是甜品,而今次換了一大盤生果,來得更清新又健康!有西瓜、蜜瓜、菠蘿和紅毛丹,全部都非常鮮甜多汁,為晚餐劃上完美句號~

吃過這頓,對越菜完全改觀了,不再是死板的生牛河、札肉、春卷,的確很欣賞大廚的創新意念。食物水準這麼高,餐廳氣氛又好,怪不得七時已滿座,性價是比較高一點,但真心覺得很值得一吃再吃!最後要提醒大家,Chôm Chôm只限walk-in,不設訂檯呢,建議早點來找位置。

Chôm Chôm, in its previous life a popular Vietnamese private kitchen on Wellington Street, now reopens as a hip, buzzing eatery on Soho's Peel Street. Helmed by talented chef Peter Cuong Franklin, a Yale and Le Cordon Bleu alumnus, in collaboration with Black Sheep Restaurants (the guys behind Boqueria and Motorino), Chôm Chôm now serves a selection of creative, reinvented Vietnamese street foods. Inspired by the Bia Hoi (meaning "beer") experience in Vietnam, where people sit in busy street corners snacking and sipping draft beer, Peter seeks to recreate a similar neighbourhood hangout spot at his Hong Kong outlet. For those who love Chôm Chôm's phos, you might be disappointed to learn that these will not be served at the revamped restaurant, as Peter wishes to show Hong Kongers that Vietnamese cuisine can be something more than phos (*shock*- really?!!)

Even though this charming eatery serves Vietnamese street foods, it does not charge street food prices - after all, this is a bright, clean restaurant right in the middle of Soho; a typical dinner will set you back around $300-$500 per head. The restaurant now only opens for dinner and doesn't take reservations. As it is still in its first few months of operation, do expect some usual teething problems, though these would be forgotten as soon as you sink your teeth into their tangy, mouthwatering street snacks and have a sip of their tasty draft beers.

(1) We dug into Peter's creation, the House-Cured Salmon Salad ($88), a fresh, vibrant salad with bean sprouts, cucumber and carrots in a kaffir lime vinaigrette. The salmon, fish roe and sesame gave it a Japanese vibe, but the sharp sourness would bring your tastebuds straight back to Vietnam!

(2) A Salt & Pepper Squid ($78) was both comforting and exciting - crispy on the surface, these squids have been cooked with garlic, ginger and black bean, and were simply moreish. You could dip it in some spicy Sriracha Mayo for extra flavours.

(4) Even though no phos were available at Chôm Chôm, these Pho beef rolls ($78) were an amazing substitute. The fresh rice noodle rolls were thick and stretchy (rather like a stretchy version of Chinese cheung funs), and a light sauce kept the pho rolls and the grilled beef appealingly moist.

(5) The funny-looking Grilled Eggplant with Crab Meat ($98) tasted incredibly refreshing - the eggplant had a satisfying char-grill taste and an attractively soft texture, and the crab meat, steamed egg, spring onions, mint and coriander all added lively flavours.

(12) Our meal ended with a Seasonal Tropical Fruit Platter ($58). As we were bursting at the seams, this was a great alternative to the usual creamy desserts. Some chili dipping salt offered a twist to the fruit platter, and the chom choms (the restaurant's namesake, also known as "rambutan") were sweet and succulent!

Some of my friends have been slightly disappointed by their meal at Chôm Chôm as they felt that their Vietnamese cravings have not been satisfied. Bear in mind, though, what the restaurant is trying to achieve - that is, changing the Hong Kong mentality about what Vietnamese food should be like. If you come with an open mind (and an empty stomach), you will be pleasantly surprised and completely satiated by the exotic dishes that it offers!

My family and I always like trying out new places so when I heard this place open up it was top of my list. Having been to a few Vietnamese restaurants in town I was looking for something new and exciting and this place is right on the money.   From the variety of thirst quenching cocktails to the tasty flavours of each dish. From the variety of thirst quenching cocktails to the tasty flavours of each dish. You can taste the freshness in all the ingredients used and each dish had its own unique flavours.

We started with the Chef Specials from the mirror. The Lemongrass Chicken Skewer was tender and tasty, right off the grill. Followed by the Softshell Crab and Pineapple Sambal, the crab itself was crispy with a light crunch and the Pineapple Sambal was fruity and not too sweet but complimented the crab. Then we had the Salmon Tartar of which the salmon was fresh and melted in your month, nicely topped with salmon roe gave you an explosion in your mouth of the flavours. 
After that we had the beef pho rolls, which were lightly pan fried and the beef inside was tender. The chicken wings were crispy on the outside and flavoursome with the spices. The deep fried black pepper squid was full of black pepper and a great accompanient to the drinks. And the beef skewer was nice and tender with each bit you took. Lastly, the grilled eggplant I did not expect to be the whole egg plant, it was nicely grilled and the crab meat really compliemented it. 

The staff provided excellent service and took great care in preparation and presentation of the food.
We sat at the bar, chatted with Peter and his team and experienced a explosions of flavours dish after dish.

I will definitely be making this a regular hangout.

Had new year's first lunch with a friend, called on 1st Jan to book and left a message. Had new year's first lunch with a friend, called on 1st Jan to book and left a message. No one brothers to confirm booking, so called again at 11am today, confirmed booking OK.

But when arrived at 1230pm, no one seems aware there is such a booking. Never mind, wait for a bit for table to be sorted.

I ordered the signature beef pho and my friend ordered the dry vermicelli with beef. My pho soup base was extremely salty, not like the normal pho. I know I shouldn't compare it with that from HCMC or Hanoi, but there are many good pho places in Hong Kong that's better. My friend told me her dry vermicelli is very salty too, which confirmed my suspicion that they are heavy on seasoning.

My mint lime soda is extremely sweet, but not minty while my friend's hot coffee is sickingly sweet too.

Even though service is not bad, I will not return for its food anymore...

You can taste the beef and chicken, unlike the ones outside, which have an anonymous, dreary savoury taste that weighs down the palate. Ice creams and sorbets are wonderfully flavoured especially the Saigon Cinnamon and toasted coconut flavours. All have a silky texture given by the pacojet. The cherry and mango sorbets are superb!

The food here is great, I try to stop by once a week after going to the gym nearby. I am especially a big fan of the chicken pho but I've not been disappointed by any of the lunch options which extend beyond pho. The fresh lime sodas are great and the homemade ice cream is always creatively flavored (e.g. mandarin orange and szechuan pepper!) and ultra creamy thanks to the PacoJet machine. Lots of fresh herbs available at the tables/counters to add to the pho's. Vegetarian options available.

The setup is a long counter around the cooking area and a table or two by the window. For lunch there is a menu with appetizers, mains, drinks and desserts and you check off the items you want. Service is prompt and friendly, but it can get quite busy for lunch. I haven't visited for dinner yet. I met Peter, the proprieter, when he was teaching Vietnamese cooking in a class - he is very knowledgeable and classically trained.

Highly recommended!

题外话/补充资料: 環境問題仲有因為地方細,open kitchen,可能抽氣唔好,返到 office 比同事話我成陣"油益味" :mad::mad::mad: sosad :( 所以偷情就唔好喇,一聞實知兩個人一齊去食飯,拍拖一齊去食就 ok,因為對方都一齊臭丫麻 ;)

I was super excited to try out this pho joint because it was advertised "homemade" pho. But the pho was more like fast food pho. Everything was pre-made from the noodles & the soup to even eggrolls! They use microwave to reheat the noodles and use an oven to heat up eggrolls! I'm sorry, but I can make better pho at home than this place.

The pho was absolutely delicious! I loved how the pho contained many fresh herbs which added lots of flavour to the broth. I have visited Vietnam many times during my travels and the pho in Chom Chom met and surpassed the average standards I have come to expect from Hong Kong "pho". Unlike many other Vietnamese restaurants in Hong Kong the broth tasted very fresh and light not wighed down with layers of msg. The fresh spring roll were perfectly matched with the sauce and created a pleasing combi

The pho broth was delicious - lots of depth, rich and tasty. The beef was tender and juicy. Add as few or as many herbs as you like, conveniently placed on your table. This visit, I tried the fried spring rolls as a starter - the pastry was both crispy and soft, good texture and flavour together with the filling.

The rice paper was smooth and tenacity, the prawns weren’t fresh. But the fish sauce compensated it, however, if fresh prawns were use, it would bring the dish to another level. The good thing about rice paper is they are always company with carrot and cucumber to give some texture to the roll.

Beef Pho (3/10)
Beef Pho is always one of the most common noodles from Vietnam. Personally, I believe the soup lacked a bit of colour and flavour. More importantly, the beef wasn’t nicely sliced and fresh, while it was over cooked too.

After the starter I was really looking forward to the Beef Pho, was thinking it might surprises me, that it might able to do something better then Nha Trang! But no doubt about Chef Peter’s dessert skills, after all, he is graduated with Le Cordon Blue.
