Came here for lunch as I was dragging around something that I didn't want scratched so needed a place with lots of space around me. As I knew El Born was usually quiet during lunch time, I came here.El Born is located in the Fashion Walk area of Causeway Bay. I decided on the soup of the day instead of the salad. The soup of the day was cream of cauliflower. The croutons were crunchy and not soggy. What a revelation! The soup was fluffy like they whipped it up with an immersion blender before hand. It wasn't rich but there was a slight taste of cauliflower.
I decided on a mini paella. This is the crispy suckling pig, baby asparagus and chorizo paella ($128). I noticed past reviews stated that they put mayo in the paella? Well, this is not mayo, but garlic aoili. Upon looking it up so I don't start claiming the OMG WHY IS THERE MAYO!! I discovered that paella is often times served with a garlic aoili as a condiment. So, I guess all of us who grew up eating Hong Kong style paella didn't know this tidbit of food trivia. And paella is not always made with seafood. It actually originated with the serving of meat like rabbit. Eye opening, I'm sure. Well, all this trivia aside, there were good and bad things with the paella. The good was the suckling pig. It really was crispy and quite good. However, the paella was a bit soggy and overdone. I wonder if they baked it? I'm unsure at this point. But overall, it was ok. It wasn't terrible but decent enough.
Dessert was an apple cinnamon-toffee Greek yogurt foam with toasted almond. Delicious. The foam was light as a cloud. The apples were soft and sprinkled heavily with the taste of cinnamon and sugar. A lickable and not too heavy ending to lunch.
Service was friendly and each item arrived when I was finished instead of all at once. It wasn't terrible and I would probably return again as a place to eat without the hassle of lining up.
