The food here just isn't up to scratch - everything sounded great on the menu - all marketed as wholesome, home-cooked style fare. In reality everything tasted pretty average. The biggest disappointment was chocolate cake - synthetic and like it was from an industrial bakery. Total rip-off.

Some who visited during the opening stages weren't at all impressed at the execution. What persuaded me to come finally was the praising by a few very knowledgeable Foodies, who always know precisely what they are talking about when it comes to food. I guess most restaurants have problems when they first start up, right?

I guess most restaurants have problems when they first start up, right? Lupa by Mario Batali slash Dining Concepts or Al Molo at the beginning springs up in my mind instantly. I always give them chances! (though it won't be forever haha, I can't pay for their staff's wages only hoping that they have learned how to cook one day

Carnitas Taco with Slow Braised Pork and Pickled Onions -
The taco tortilla was surprisingly small, but that mount of meat piled on top was substantial! I think Mexican purists might say this is out of proportion or lacking herbs or picante or salsa sauce or the recipe simply not authentic, but I think a lot of heart has been put into this presentable Taco. The pork was like pulled meat, not exactly tender but carrying a great marinated flavour. The pickled onion just worked so well together as a combo. Some sort of newer Mexican style food that I like. Even the corn tortilla used in this taco was very strong in maize/corn taste and had a great grainy texture, it was truly impressive in itself... ~ 8/10

Prawn Taco -
The other signature here is the Mole Chicken version, but they didn't cook it on the day for some reason. Out came this other daily special Prawns taco version, which is quite different from what I had expected. The usual version has a lot of chipotle sauce and are a little more fried in looks, but these seem like they were just boiled. Nevertheless this mayo-like version was equally enjoyable and came with more herbs than before, and it was hotter than it looked.... Once again it is not so traditional even by So-Cal Mex style, but taste matters sometimes. There are always pioneers who buck the trend and reinvent the world and lead the people onto greater plateaus, at least they are not mis-labelling stuff here as being authentic! I honestly think Heirloom excelled in this area and I came away a bit impressed by their ingenuity.

Lemongrass Soda -
This was recommended by the staff and it was actually decent, kind of like a mixture between a lemonade and soda, but made with lemongrass instead.

I was hoping to revisit here a few more times and to try out more items before finally reviewing here, but looking at the many crying faces which are highly suspicious and probably written by their jealous competitors nearby, I guess I'll write them a review first on how I really think for this visit. If the next visit is not as good or has worst food, I will let them know as well. We just want better Mexican food in town. Taco Chaca in Saiwan is also not a bad place to visit too, with their owners from L.A., but here it is quite a bit more classier...

話說某週末和朋友經過上環荷李活道一帶,眼見這間店子環境相當不錯,簡約的裝修而且帶有悠閒的感覺,想像食物也不會太差的,所以隔了兩天便和朋友來到這裡吃午餐試試他們的出品。

我們特地選了店子最外面的位置,對面是荷李活道公園,而且這條馬路車輛不多,在高樓底的餐廳下對著街外午餐,我們也很有到了外國的感覺,實在是非常寫意。

這裡沒有set lunch,但也有不同的選擇,由於午飯還是避免吃得太飽,我們兩人就點了兩份sandwiches一起分著吃,另外還可選跟沙律或炸蕃薯條,而我們就各要了一樣試試看。

Sandwiches四款中我們選了The Barefoot Contessa 和 Sumac & Spice & All Things Nice,前者是不差的,但後者實在是很好吃,非常推介呢! The Barefoot Contessa中間主要的餡料是用上穀飼牛,牛肉烤得生熟度剛好,內裡肉質很嫩一點也不韌,而且還帶有點點肉汁,肉味不算非常濃郁但配上horseradish cream酸酸甜甜的醬汁令它變得更開胃,加上爽口的芝麻菜和烤得脆口的麵包,其實這已是不錯的了,但奈何後者真的更好吃!!

另一款Sumac & Spice & All Things Nice是我和朋友皆很喜歡且推介的,它的麵包是用上Brioche法式牛油麵包,所以吃下去非常香且軟熟,還帶有點點甜味,有點點在吃博洛尼亞麵包的感覺,單是這個麵包已較前者好吃。內裡的煎三文魚肉質非常嫩滑,而且鮮味仍保留十足呢。加上醬汁味道亦調較得很不錯,有輕微的酸辣再加上蛋黃醬,整體實在是很美味呀。*v*

另外炸蕃薯條也一樣很好吃,表面只有一層薄薄的炸粉,咬下很香脆又一點油膩感也沒有,蕃薯的味道非常香甜,實在是一吃就停不了口,非常邪惡呀~~~

和朋友吃畢以上的東西也感到很飽足了,第一次來對這裡的印象非常不錯,我們就像坐在外國那些露天的餐廳,感受著溫柔的陽光,吃著美味的食物,悠閒地聊天,吃畢這樣的一個午餐,整天也充滿力量了。=))))))

Time of day: mid-afternoon for dessert
We ordered:

Unfortunate event:
We had a third of the cake left and wanted to take it home. When it was taken away to be packaged, the waitress apologized that someone had thrown it out by accident. She did not offer to replace it - we told her to and she seemed scared but agreed. The piece was smaller than what we were going to take home.
Difficulty Communicating with Staff:
My friend and I are English speakers but found that we had a hard time communicating with our waitress, who also spoke English. She seemed to have a hard time understanding our questions.

Conclusion:
Cute decor, delicious cake
service staff, hot chocolate, breakfast tea, and a particular group of noisy costumers

Its the first time I visited Heirloom not knowing what to expect. Walking in reminded me of a recent trip to Seattle, where the look and feel of many places were very individualistic, such as this one. I absolutely love it but can see how HK diners expect everything to be normed & may not appreciated a table appointed with an array of designer chairs versus unison chairs from IKEA. If you are not artistic & do not like mixed modern design features, better go to the Press Room or another place ne

There is no plain food but when asked if we could have some plain - someone in our group had the stomach flu going around in HK at the moment - the staff were extremely accomodating. The food was fresh, hot and traditional. There are no fancy extras required for a taco with good flavor, if you want a taco with processed cheese, lettuce, chopped tomatoes, etc. go to Taco Bell. These are tacos as you would find them in the best traditional Mexican restaurants (I understand the owner is Mexican) - a option where you can actually make them yourself may be a consideration for the future.

There desserts and cakes were amazing and interesting but the absolute hit with everyone - including some choosy dessert eaters we had with us - were the freshly baked cookies with milk in a glass bottle. Its childhood dreams reawakened, the only way the experience could be improved would be if they were served in a cookie jar, so you could secretly dip in your hand as in mommy's kitchen!


I will certainly be back. They take bookings only for parties of 6 or more, so it may be for a party...

I had been to Heirloom before, it's mediocre food with a nice setting, apart from the little bistro tables that almost topple over (be careful).However today I stopped by for a coffee as it's very near from my house and asked for a double-shot latte, for an extra boost of energy.The coffee was fine, nothing out of the ordinary but OK. However, when I got the bill they simply charged me for two lattes..?!?(usually restaurants add a few dollars for the second shot, not DOUBLE the cost of the bever

I had been to Heirloom before, it's mediocre food with a nice setting, apart from the little bistro tables that almost topple over (be careful).

64 HKD for a cup of slightly strong coffee, wow. That's the last they will ever see of me, there's no way I would ever pay these greedy people another dime in my life.

Good luck for anyone who want to dine there, you have been warned (read other people's reviews for more surprises).

Last night, we thought we would give it another try since it's just a couple minute walk from our apartment. First problem. I told the lady to put us down for three. I held up three fingers and said three. When our table came up she somehow thought I said two, so we ended up crowding around a two person table.

The sandwiches are never available in the evening, even though they are on the menu, so don't ask.


I ordered the taco platter with 2 fish tacos, 1 chicken, and 1 pork.
First time they bring my food over, no fish tacos on there.
Second time, still no fish tacos on there.


So I explain to the lady what I ordered. Finally, my plate shows up.

I'm not sure if it is the chefs intent to serve the tacos cool/cold, but they seemed to be lacking flavor. I explained to our server that I think the tacos would be better if they served them hot, or at least warm.

In the end, the tacos are a pretty small plate for $135.

Oh, and I can't forget about our server who FINALLY brought ketchup over after we had already finished our fries. But hey, we wanted to eat our fries hot.

This place has a lot of stuff to figure out before I'll give them another try, luckily they let you decide the tip to leave.
You're paying Soho prices for only mediocre food and are better off to keep walking up the street to 208 Duecetto Otto or Classified.

Popped in for dinner on a wednesday night. Got a table no problem. Love the design.However, menu is completely lacking. This was my second time I have had tacos there, first time was fish and second time was pork. Both were very very boring - with just a bit of fish or pork on a small tortilla and a tiny bit of topping like sauce or cabbage. Needed much more of everything. My boyfriend had spare ribs and polenta which came in a bowl and seemed to have been made a while ago. For a bit less than $200 we were expecting something good but it was tiny portion, a very odd taste and the polenta was like glue. Eww.

This place has so much promise, and the cakes look good, but the menu is really dull and I think they need to revisit it asap if they want to get me back there. The fresh flowers and feel was lovely but they should probably pay less attention to that and more to the food.

This mix is what I experienced that very special night when I saw Mrs Anson Chan, Ms Lydia Dunn and many other previous civil servants at the restaurant. It's absolutely fantastic the ambiance, the taco is mini but so fun and the Balinese salad, a goose liver with pumpkin and a short ribs! Fabulous mix I had but regrettably they don't serve alcoholic drinks like wine yet, otherwise it would be an even happier meal. I

I live near Hollywood Road and have been patiently waiting this new eatery to open around the corner. Much to my delight, doors are open and menu is insane! Since opening (two weeks ago) I have already visited 4 times!The lowdown.... They have only 4 tables at streetfront- Great if you have a dog/smokerThey have a bartop with very delicious looking cakes on i! (would only recommend if you're not on a diet!) As these are so good! So far have triend their carrot cake cupcake and red velvet cake. B

The lowdown....

They have only 4 tables at streetfront- Great if you have a dog/smoker
They have a bartop with very delicious looking cakes on i! (would only recommend if you're not on a diet!) As these are so good! So far have triend their carrot cake cupcake and red velvet cake. Both great. The upstairs, decorated as a living room, I love the art on the walls and the carpets on the floor. Its cozy, perfect for a date, or group of friends.

The menu- It reminds me of something you would find in a cool area in LA. Very different from what you usually find in HK. One of the owners is Mexican, and the other Indonesian. You can tell! They are both around, and super helpful. They will guide you through the menu, and suggest pairings for the food. Its good to see them so involved and excited.

The tacos are AMAZING! Best in HK for sure. (I'm sure they will win the best taco award if HK had such thing) They also have a few mains that are very good. Coq Au Vin to be exact...

They don't take reservations for under 6 people, so go early and willing to wait. All items are limited so make sure you have more than one item you fancy as it may not be available...

The crowd- cool cool cool. Everyone around me is wearing thick brimmed glasses, and skinny jeans. Funny haircuts and all. This is on everyone's radar as the new hip eatery in Sheung Wan.

Service is NOT included, and this is making the staff be even more better than they already are. Rare for HK, keep it up, and tip well!

- A friend ordered the con carne and we were waiting 1/2 hour before the waitress came back telling us that there is no con carne today. She was not apologetic at all about it.
- Another friend was waiting about 40minutes for her salad. No update was provided by the waitress. Note, the table next to us of 6 had arrived later than us and received their salads.
- We had to get up get our own additional serving plates.
- The waitress seemed to know little about the menu in terms of meal sizes. She could have atleast offered to check with the kitchen, but that obviously didn't happen.

The only upside for this place, was the decor and the sweet potato fries that come with the sandwiches. The fries were crispy with the right amount of salt.

Overall, i think the place has teething issues which need to be ironed out.

Late lunch - got there at 1.45 PM - only one small table available so I had to squeeze in right next to the bar.Very nice decor and furniture. - but I was not feeling particularly comfortable though - too cramped, noisy, and the smell coming form the kitchen felt a bit fried and oily. I had to ask for the menu. Fairly small selection of dishes - some had their price crossed out so I had to assume that they were not available. Fairly small selection of dishes - some had their price crossed out so I had to assume that they were not available. After some hesitation I ordered a Cappucino (32HK$) and their ...

"Balinese Chopped Salad" (Grilled Chicken, purple cabbage, runner beans, cherry tomatoes, lemongrass-lime Sambal dressing , avocados) at 115HK$.

At this price my expectations were set fairly high .... Wait time was about 10 / 15 minutes, but what came to the table was a serious let down.

Cubes of chicken on one side - a quarter of an avocado on the other, and a mixture of red cabbage in the middle. I could not see any cherry tomatoes.

Taste: the cabbage had been soaked in the dressing for too long and did not feel crispy fresh anymore, even a bit sour old. The sauce was spicy and unremarkable. The chicken cubes were quite juicy and tasty but that's the only positive.


This dish is way off the mark and I would not recommend it.

The coffee was as good as any Nespresso machine can make it because that's what they use.

The bill came to 147HK$ and I did not feel the urge to leave a tip - overall the staff did not seem to be bothered.

Hope this place one day lives up to expectations. A very long way to go.
