This new dining destination is the first venture of Chef Jack Carson (previously at Dining Concept's Bistecca, BLT Steak and Blue Smoke BBQ) and his wife, Kathlyn Carson. Paying homage to the couple's New Orleans roots, the menu showcases a variety of creole culinary expressions. The soul food is bold and flavourful, and every dish is designed to tickle Hong Kong's curious tongues. Aptly named Restoration, the dining room is decorated with charming, eclectic fixtures that are reminiscent of a home in New Orleans, and you can look through a large window and watch the cooks bustle about in the kitchen. The restaurant does not impose a compulsory service charge, but the warm, friendly and attentive staff who were very happy to point out the menu's signature dishes definitely deserved a tip!

(1) The Fried softshell Crab ($148), a flawless, refreshing starter, was brought to our table. The fried softshell crab had a fantastic crunch, and formed an excellent symphony with the organic vegetables dressed in chive aioli.

(2) The waiter recommended the rather unusual Crabmeat cheesecake ($108). Fresh strands of crabmeat were mixed with cheese and moulded into a savoury pecan pastry, and it was rich and scrumptious. However, while I found the fiery, spicy creole meuniere an interesting addition, my two friends were not too fond of the curious sensation.

(3) The Andouille Crusted Fish ($218) was our favourite dish of the night: deliciously crispy on the surface, the fish was still meltingly tender and succulent in the middle. A spicy crystal beurre blanc sauce added some zing, and it hit the taste buds in the right places.

(4) Thanks to Chef Jackson's experience at steakhouses, we have heard great things about Restoration's steaks (despite it not being a typical creole dish). In the end however, we opted for the signature dish, Jack's Fried Chicken ($248), as we simply did not have room for beef. The surface was perceptibly crunchy and the tobasco aioli offered a spicy kick which helped cut through the heaviness of the chicken. Perhaps we visited on an off-day, but the chicken was dry and chewy on the inside and we had expected a more accomplished main course from this restaurant. Some watermelon pickles were served on the side and they were more plumped up and less sour than normal pickles.

(6) The Corn Maque Choux ($78) was full of flavours and my two foodie friends loved it. However, it was too umami-rich (tasted too meaty) for me as a side dish and I would have preferred something less flavourful.

(7) At this point of the meal, we had eaten so much already that we could hardly handle any more food, but we found it improper not to at least order one dessert. We decided to go for a new item on the menu, the Banana Fosters ($108), which was basically bananas cooked in butter, sugar and some spiced rum sauce, topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Quoting my friend, "just put banana, sugar and butter together and it will taste amazing". Even though we could barely detect the presence of rum, this dessert was a plate of guilty goodness and we ate one piece of banana after another until we finished the entire dessert.

Even if a bit heavy and filling, the dishes at Restoration were in general tangy and delicious. The total bill came to around $450 per head, which was acceptable. Hong Kong could do indeed with a second creole restaurant after the private kitchen Magnolia. Even though I can't come here too often as I was absolutely stuffed after my meal, I do hope this intriguing eatery is here to stay.

I booked a table for 6 of us and had to call in and push back the reservation to a later time and they were extremely flexible with our party. My wife, who was meeting us from the airport, had a delayed flight, and the wait staff were very friendly and patient with us as we stalled to order.

The majority of the employees are American, and not having the language barrier for a place serving American/Western cuisine was awesome. Because our booking was later in the evening, the room was only at 3/4 or so capacity, making the noise level good for family dining. Because Restoration is so new, the cleanliness is near perfect.

We started out with the Rosemary Matchstick Fries and Hush Puppies with our cocktails and the complimentary fresh, warm bread. Both were served piping hot with excellent flavor and texture, and condiments were served in personal Le Creuset pots. The food came out much quicker than expected and all at once, something that rarely happens with a table of 6.

Though I would not say this is a kid-friendly restaurant, they do have traditional Southern fried chicken which my two younger children shared and thoroughly enjoyed. My wife and I both ordered the Shrimp and Grits, and both of us cleaned out plates. The shrimp were cooked perfectly, and the grits were cooked to the right consistency. My daughter ordered the market fish, which was a pan seared, Andouille Crusted Seabass filet. One of the more flavorful fish dishes I've ever tried, but it wasn't overdone. It is a little on the spicy and salty side, though. My son ordered the grass fed New Zealand steak, which our whole table agreed was one of the best steaks any of us had ever tried. I would also highly recommend the, jumbalaya. We ordered a small side of it and split it between the 6 of us. Finally for dessert we had the beignets with powdered sugar. These are excellent as well, but a little heavier and doughier than other we have tried.

We all left very full and we intend to return. We have a friend from New Orleans that is coming to visit in a few weeks and Restoration impressed us enough to take him there when he arrives. Though there may have been a few hiccups in the first few months, this place seems to have definitely worked out the kinks.

This is the second time I have visited this restaurant, which is unmistakably born out of the American deep south, and not unlike something you might find in New Orleans. It is in a good location on Wyndham Street, and has an interesting if not slightly eclectic decor (we understand some of the interior was sourced from rubble left over by Hurricane Katrina).

On both occasions we walked away with happy tummies.

The highlight of both experiences was the quality, preparation and seasoning of the steak - which was excellent. We preferred the meaty flavor of the striploin over the ribeye, and enjoyed the roasted garlic which accompanied it. There was no need for further seasoning or sauces, just full on beefy and garlicky goodness.

From the side dishes we selected, the cream corn maque choux was by far the best. A rich and creamy corn mixture which tasted as if the corn might have been slightly roasted over an open fire. There was also a hint of chili in the mix which was just enough to tickle the tongue. An excellent choice if having the steak.

We also enjoyed the fried green tomato salad, although we found the salad dressing lacking balance, as its sourness tended to overpower the delicate fresh taste of the tomato which should have been the star of the show.

The wine list was ok, but relatively limited for anyone who is an enthusiast.

The real problem from our view is the front of the house. Service was relatively unorganized - with seemingly no one designated to our table. Throughout the evening we had no less than 4 different people approach us. The knowledge of the menu and ingredients was lacking - or at best simply wasn't shared. The wine list was left at the table without explanation - and when asked, the server seemed to not know or care what might best accompany our meal.

No one seemed in charge, and our orders were served incorrectly at the table.

The whole experience could have been so much better with a little thought and attention to detail.

All in all, I would recommend a visit if you are a steak lover - but if you are a person who needs a bit of menu-handholding, or an old queen who enjoys a bit of attention, you'd best give it a miss.

But unfortunately the experience I had was, at best, average.

Staff
Great on the telephone, called to confirm the reservation etc. Yet when we arrived, the girl on the door asked repeatedly if we had a reservation (we said yes) and then she looked around the restaurant as if we shouldn't have been there. She was able to ask someone who knew which table was ours, but surely the reservations book should be on the door, or at least someone who has seen it and knows which parties to expect at what times... Waiting staff were mostly good.

Food
Nothing special. Lumpy bland mash (no salt on the tables), fried chicken was ok but had been slightly overcooked. Green bean casserole again hadn't been seasoned and the pecan pie was ok, but hardly the generous portion you would expect from a restaurant that serves this type of food. It was fine though, nothing 'wrong' with it, but I couldn't recommend it to anyone. We ate there to see if Restoration would be a good place for a friend's birthday dinner. Sadly, it would not.

Atmosphere
There was no real buzz, but this may be because the place is so new

Price
Expensive, and not even nearly delicious enough to justify the prices. Over $300HKD for crab cakes!

I was going to write more sections, but just thinking about it makes me feel very apathetic and "meh", just like the whole experience we had there!

I have heard mixed reviews of here but the night menu is very interesting with a variety of Creole and Cajun Cuisine food. Would be back to try other things soon. I thought at the price of $120 for a sandwich, may be it might include a soda or something. But anyway there's no 10% Service Charge which is cool.

When we turned up, there was no table for us as the restaurant messed up our reservation. They somehow booked us for a day later. But the staff was very nice and tried their best to accommodate us. The restaurant was full but they managed to set up 3 bar seats by the kitchen for us.

The décor of the restaurant is very shabby chic. They also use mismatched plates which is very cite. Think it leans towards the feminine side which we really loved. But my friend commented that she wouldn’t bring her husband here because it felt too feminine. The tables were very close together and it was pretty loud so a little difficult to talk.

We shared a Gumbo and Crab Crème Brulee for appetizers. The waiter told us the Gumbo was enough for 4-5 people to share but when it came out it was in a small jar and just enough for 2 people to get a taste. The Gumbo was thick with some added rice and had a nice smokey flavor. I would like to see more okra in it though but overall it was pretty satisfying! The Crab Crème Burlee was really disappointing on the other hand. I expected something really creamy and smooth like the dessert but it was basically a small slice of crab quiche with almost no crab meat and very dry pastry.

For mains we wanted the crab cake but it was sold out so we ordered the Fried Chicken, Shrimp and Grits and Blackened Fish. The fried chicken was the best, it was moist and crunchy and had good flavors. But I suppose the restaurant better get the chicken right when they’re charging close to $300 for 4 pieces of fried chicken (the mains didn’t come with any side dishes). I personally like the blackened fish the best, it was the most flavorful. The shrimp and grits was the worst, the shrimp was over cooked. Sitting by the kitchen, I saw there was a bowl of pre-cooked shrimp sitting by the window and I couldn’t help wonder if they used the cooked shrimps and just re-heated when customers ordered and that’s why the shrimp was so over-cooked? The grits was very grainy and lacked the creamy texture that I was really looking forward to.

The manager sent us free desserts because they messed up our reservation. We had the beignets, ice cream sandwich and pecan pie. The beignets were really heavy and tasted like fried dough with powdered sugar. The ice cream sandwich came half melted and we saw the restaurant use Nestle ice cream. I don’t think the cookies are homemade either as they taste stale and hard. The pecan pie was the best dessert. Have to say all of the desserts were terrible and we were really glad we didn’t have to pay for them. Would highly suggest you go somewhere else for desserts.

There was free corkage when we went as the restaurant is still waiting for their liquor license but the manager mentioned that they should be getting it shortly.

The service was great with very friendly staff and hospitable manager.

It's nice to see a one of the kind restaurant with different concept in Hong Kong.

I don't like to be so critical about a new restaurant but my experience was so unsatisfying that I think it's important to share. I hate getting sucked in by all the positive reviews in the online media about a new place (by reviewers who no doubt got free meals and treated as guests, if they even went to the restaurant at all!) then finding the place to be far more lacklustre. I went with a group of friends.

Mains:

We eat ordered a main and a side, having been told by the wait staff that mains were insufficient as stand alone meals and sides were necessary. I had blackened catfish with popcorn rice and tarragon cream. It was okay but certainly not great. The fish wasn't really blackened though, the rice tasted like just fluffed up plain steamed rice, and the cream wasn't very tarragon-y. The friend who also ordered this dish, and who's more accustomed to Southern foods, shared my assessment. Given this dish include absolutely no vegetables, I ordered a spinach salad to go with it. Didn't like it much, too sweet, too much feta, something was off. One friend ordered a steak but felt she'd had better elsewhere. Two friends ordered andouille crusted fish and were both quite happy with this dish. Three people had the jambalaya as their side and were happy with this too. So perhaps order carefully; there may be some hits on this menu!

Dessert:

Having had an uninspiring main course, I was keen to give this place an opportunity to redeem itself with dessert. I didn't find the menu too appealing but I picked the Pecan Pie. None of my friends could pick anything to entice them. When it my pie arrived I was cautious. The filling was blackened and looked burnt. It also tasted burnt and the pastry, reaching way out beyond the filling, was dry and tasteless. It was served with cheap vanilla icecream. I tried a bit of each section and could eat no more. I'm not a fussy eater and I could count using the fingers on one hand the number of times in my life I've found a dish inedible. But this was certainly not worth its calorie count. I'd resolved if any staff member asked about our food, I'd tell them how disappointing the dessert had been (again, I don't complain). But no one asked. And the waiter removed the barely touched dish without so much as an acknowledgement that it was uneaten.

Drinks:

I believe they are still building up their drinks menu. There were only two cocktails on the menu, Sazerac and Pimm's Lemonade. I tried the Pimm's Lemonade and it was fine, came with a slice of blood orange. We shared a bottle of wine and one diner ordered wine by the glass. One friend coughed up the $44 for a cup of tea.

Service:

We needed a fair bit explained as many of these dishes haven't travelled too far from the South and there were no explanations on the menus. Some of the staff were well meaning and mostly service was adequate. But one staff member was quite pushy, always asking us to order another bottle of wine, when we all still had wine in our glasses. Not sure I saw the Southern hospitality that was advertised.

Price:

There no mandatory service charge but diners are encouraged to tip as they see fit. All up, my share of the bill came to $600 including tip. My friends' bills were similar, despite not having had dessert. Considering I didn't even like the food, this seemed outrageous. I get that the location is nice but you can certainly get significantly better value, better quality food even in Central. Even the cute little Le Creseut serving dishes don't earn that pricetag.
