This restaurant has been an establishment in HK for a long time and has been known as the fancy, high-end place to go for French food. Finally deciding to overcome the price barrier, we came here to celebrate my mothers birthday as we thought the environment would be suitable but we were sadly disappointed. The service was quite lacklustre and even slightly passive aggressive (when we asked for water refill, our server held an annoyed facial expression and even scoffed at us); the environment was also not ideal as out table for 4 people was so cramped, my father kept kicking my feet due to the lack of space under the table, we were also against a wall which meant even less space and made me feel quite claustrophobic.

Moving on the the food, everyone found the dishes too salty but I did not. I will say as a whole that olive oil was used in every dish and my Chinese parents to definitely felt slightly uncomfortable because of this. Me and my younger palate did not mind though.

We asked our server what he recommended and he basically pointed out all the most expensive things on the menu…. We tried a few of what he suggested but agreed they were all sub par.

We started with a choice between whole grain and white baguette. You pour your own olive oil from the giant bottle on the table and dip with the bread but I did ask for a side of butter as well. The bread is served warm with a delectable crunch and fluffy interior. I asked for two refills and they managed to stay tasty throughout the night (won’t become distastefully stale).

Escargots de Bourgogne $238

One of (if not) the most famous French hors d’oeuvres so we had to get it. However, I was very disappointed with the snail meat which is smaller than my pinky nail and 90% of the shell was just garlic butter which surprisingly lacked the flavour of garlic and tasted like parsley butter. Nonetheless, this me,ted liquid gold was delicious when mopped with bread. But I do not feel it is acceptable for them to charge us this price for butter filled shells practically non existent meat.

Croquettes de Morue $138

This salt cod croquette was recommended by our server and it is very delicious. It is a fluffy and soft fish cake with cod and supposedly sweet potatoes but just tasted like potatoes. I absolutely adored the roasted pepper relish for flavour and this accompaniment was delicious but 70% oil. I do recommend dipping the bread in this oil as it has been infused with the roasted peppers. There are 5 small balls which is nice for sharing as an appetiser.

Beignets de Courgettes $198

This was also recommended by our server and I was intrigued by the use of zucchini flowers which is very rare to find in HK. Unfortunately, it tasted of nothing but fried batter which is thin but quite greasy. The additional salt on top tasted good to me but my family thought it was too salty. However, we did collectively agree that the tomato sauce makes the dish so much better as it provides a tangy, sweet and just simply, a flavour profile to this otherwise bland dish.

It is also stated that there should be anchovies stuffed in the sage leaves but our sage leaves were hollow. We relayed this feedback to the staff in hoped they would try and redeem themselves but they did not and simply disregarded our comment. This really disappointed me as I love anchovies and believed it would have made the dish much better.

Porc Sagabuta avec Chimichurri $268

As for our main, we went with their famous grilled sagabuta pork with chimmichuri which is much smaller than I thought and would normally be shared between two. The pork though was tender and well seasoned and the chimichurri was more onion focused but still refreshing and tasty. I will say that some parts of the pork is on the pink side which I don’t mind but my parents certainly did.

Daurade Entiere au Citron $598

Our server also recommended their whole sea bream as a fish course and we thought he meant the grilled sea bream $498 but actually it was this baked sea bream with lemon, herbs and olive oil. I did not enjoy this miscommunication but it was still delicious. The fish is not only presented beautifully as a whole but very skilfully separated but not deboned very well as there were a lot loose bones. I will say that the server who presented us the whole fish had a pretty unenthusiastic and borderline annoyed facial expression (which I caught on camera but will not post to protect her) which hindered our appetite. I also wished they saved me the head, tail, and skin to eat but sadly they threw it away.

The meat was flaky and tender, well seasoned but you can still taste the natural essence of the fish. The sauce though is what is highlighted from this dish. It’s oil based but incredibly zesty and tangy with lemon, onions, and herbs. Paired with a light but aggressively tangy salad and it certainly is the best main if you want something light and refreshing. I enjoyed mopping the leftover oil and sauce with bread and eating them with the fish skin for extra flavour and moisture.

The portion is also very generous as there is four rather thick pieces of fish.

Gratin Dauphinois $108

As a side to out mains, we got their potato gratin (recommended by our server) and I would say it is a fancier mashed potato side as the potato slices are individually placed and compacted, then covered with cream and baked. The result is this creamy, homogenous dish with a slight bite from the potato slices. A very good side and I cleaned the plate of cream with some bread. The only comment is that it is on the heavy side and my family found this dish rather salty (again, I did not).

Pain Perdu Façon $128

How can we leave without trying their signature dessert, if not dish? And fortunately, it lived up to the hype. This small but thick piece of French toast is extremely soft and custardy without being too thick on the mouth. The outside is lightly caramelised with a layer of sugar for that crunch and toffee taste. Eating the two together is a melange of textures and I will relive this moment forever. The cold spiced ice cream on the side is a good contrast to the warm toast. The only complain we had was the portion as we only had one bite each so definitely not price adjacent.

Also noting that we waited for 30 minutes for these desserts which is quite absurd as many other tables got their desserts before us even though we finished out mains first.

Tarte Fine aux Pommes $128

We also got their apple tart as it was recommended and it was tasty but nothing too special. The puff pastry is thinner than other places but still crisp and chewy. The apple slices were hard to cut through as they didn’t give us a knife, they maintained their structure without being crunchy which I enjoyed. The vanilla ice cream is delicious and you not only see but can taste the real vanilla beans used when making it. Again, the only complaint is the portion which is way too small for the price charged.

💬 Overall, the food was decent but the service was pretty bad. The only thing I would return for is the French toast. I’m not saying the food is bad but not worth the price tag. Maybe if you are affluent enough you can visit frequently, or if you fancy French food but if you only dine out on special occasions, don’t waste your money here.
