With the rate that I am coming to Lai Chi Kok, perhaps I should consider moving here! I am coming off the heels of a very good first visit back in March (when the restaurant just opened its door for business). Apart from the warm and inviting ambience, the thing that also impressed me a lot was their modern Shanghainese cuisine, which was strongly influenced by the cooking techniques of Beijing, Sichuan and Hunan style cooking.

Tea leaf smoked egg with caviar | 黑鱼子熏蛋 ($22 each) - This was served lukewarm. Very nice runny yolk with lovely smoky flavors coming from tea leaves. The topping of caviar gave it the perfect finishing touch. In my opinion, even better than the version from Dong Lai Shun. Love it (4.5/5)~

Noodles in soup with beef | 外滩蒙牛刀削面 ($68) - The "knife shaved" noodles had some good bite but the key was the signature "Mongolian" style beef stew. Very tasty (4/5).

Yancheng seafood bisque | 阳澄湖海鲜汤 ($88) - Like the previous noodle soup, this was also a house specialty. The beautifully decorated bisque had a nice collection of fresh seafood in the mix including half of a crab, prawn and garoupa. Very rich and full of flavors (4/5).

Deep fried sweet and sour fish with pine nuts | 招牌崧子鱼 ($280) - Love the job the chef did to debone the fish before the deep frying. The sweet and sour sauce was absolutely perfect and so was the fish, which was deep fried to perfection. This, along with the smoked egg, was both something to die for (5/5)!

Roasted baby duck | 外滩片皮雏鸭 ($168) - The signature roasted duck was a little disappointing tonight. The portion (supposingly for an entire baby duck) was surprisingly small and the skin was not crispy enough (2.5/5).

Stir-fried string beans | 干扁四季豆 ($?) - Some veggie after all the meat and seafood. The string beans had very good bite and I like the fact that they've added some dried scallops to the mix (3.5/5).

Stir fried rice cakes with shredded pork and preserved vegetables | 雪菜肉丝炒年糕 ($78) - I have never liked Chinese rice cakes to begin with. This was OK. Like a bowl of plain rice, something to stuff my stomach with (3/5)!

Like my previous visit, I left a pretty satisfied customer. Looks like Lai Chi Kok is slowly building up a nice array of restaurants these days.
