I was eagerly anticipating trying the signature pineapple bun with thick butter at this establishment. The pineapple bun is meant to be a delightful contrast - a crisp, golden-brown exterior giving way to a soft, pillowy interior, with a generous portion of cool, creamy butter melting into the bun.Sadly, this is not what I experienced on my most recent visit. Sadly, this is not what I experienced on my most recent visit. While the bun itself was toasted to perfection, with the right balance of crispness and fluffiness, the real letdown was the woefully inadequate amount of butter. Instead of the expected thick layer that would envelop the entire bun, there was barely enough to cover a quarter of the surface area.

Pineapple buns with butter are a Hong Kong institution, and this cha chan teng needs to do justice to this beloved classic.
