Little fun facts about Greek cuisine: it is one of many amazing Mediterranean cuisines, which is meant to encapsulate the knowledge of centuries as Greece has a long culinary history. Every time Greece was conquered by another empire, new ingredients and dishes would be introduced and their dishes would evolve. Greek restaurant is also called tavern. The element of Greek cooking often incorporates olives, feta cheese, Greek honey, legumes (chickpeas), seafood and yogurt.
What we ordered in this "tavern":
MEZEDES/MEZZE (appetisers)
Hummus with pita $58+$32
Dipping hummus with warm pita bread is like a heavenly combination and you might have a feeling that you didn’t order enough pita once you had your first bite.
MAIN
Calamari $108
Nice to serve as a starter but they regard it as a main dish. Generally speaking, the taste is fine but it’s a bit overpriced and would recommend you to order something else as this is not as traditional as the rest of the Greek dishes. Moreover, calamari can be easily found in other restaurants serving other cuisines.
Patatakia $58
For those who are more reserved to try Greek food for the first time may kick-start their meal with some French fries seasoned with garlic. Best if the fries are dipped into the complementary garlic yogurt!
Chicken souvlaki $128
Pork souvlaki $118
Souvlaki means grilled meat on a skewer. Asian may not get used to the taste of raw onions and herbs which are served on the side but other than that, both souvlaki are decent, esp. when they are served with the yogurt dips
DESSERTS
There was only one choice on dessert column and so we got two of them with lit candles arranged by staff for our birthday girls.
Labneh Cheesecake $68
Labneh means thicky and creamy, which is made by hanging yogurt in a cheesecloth to thicken the texture, i.e. Yogurt cheese. Very rich texture and all of us love it.
After having all the delicious and nourishing Mediterranean food, the staff decided to bring some birthday cheer. Birthday girls were invited to stand on their chairs to each break a plate as an ancient tradition. Smashing plates in Greece symbolising new beginnings as they ward off evil spirits by smashing them.
Overall, we had a fun cultural night and would certainly return again in the future. Hopefully trying out some new traditional Greek dishes and learning more about the Greek culture.
They keep the Greek names on their menu with a glossary at the back for clarity – very thoughtful.
