Izakaya sotoi is a small restaurant in the middle of tai hang. It is one you could easily walk by without seeing since it is somewhat hidden. The restaurant has two stores. A main store and a side store where they have extra seating. We were allocated to the side store since they were fully seated already. The side store is small and packed and it seems that grilled izakaya food is the main focus. We still ordered the sushi off the menu since it was a hot day. No complaints about the side store as it is nicely temperature regulated and not blasted with music. Like with all side stores, it is impossible to get a hold of the staff since they would all mainly be at the main store. If you need something, make sure to ask for it all in one go.

Starter

We both got the udon set which meant that both of us got the udon. I quite liked the udon as it was chewy and rather enjoyable. The broth it was served in was also really good and drinkable. This is coupled with the amount of side ingredients such as the clams. This starter is meant to be small so it was pretty good. It was rather perplexing why they did it this way since the menu calls it an udon set with sushi rice. This is what they meant when the name suggests there’s two main carbs in the set.

Assorted sashimi sushi with rice bowl

I loved it. The sashimi was fresh. The sushi rice was brilliantly done. I’m not sure one can have a lot of complaints with this dish. In terms of value for money, the whole set is worth 148 HKD which is a good value. There was 4 different types of sashimi including the shrimp which makes this rice bowl one that I would get again.

Grilled eel rice

The grilled eel rice was also done really well. It came with two pieces of assorted sashimi. As you could probably guess, the sashimi was pretty fresh. The quality of the eel was also good too. You can tell that the eel was grilled properly. The sauce wasn’t too salty which is often the case which makes the pairing with the rice amazing. I could have devoured this whole bowl in a heartbeat.

Dessert

The orange was so cute. Honestly, it is stuff like this that makes me appreciate the small stores. You could tell that they are willing to put in the effort to make things look and taste good.
