I have a love hate relationship with the Vietnamese food here. I know that it won't be as good nor authentic as what I had back home. But at least I hope it won't be overpriced and at least taste reasonably ok. So, when I saw there was a new Vietnamese place that opened in Tsim Sha Tsui, I decided to give it a try. When we arrived, the staff was pretty eager and even said we could order from the lunch set even though it was dinner time. When we arrived, the staff was pretty eager and even said we could order from the lunch set even though it was dinner time. And as it was newly opened, they offered no 10% service charge. They will add this later.
Though they have a paper menu, they do insist you order from the tablet. Use of the tablet is quite user friendly. Menu is in English and Chinese. They offer not only pho but also main dishes like spring rolls and seafood.
But we were told we could order from the lunch sets so we did just that. Lunch sets come with a drink.
Pho with Thin Slices of Beef ($56). First things first. The soup. The soup was lukewarm. It didn't even cook the beef at all when we dunked it in for a long amount of time. The soup also tasted like MSG. There was no rich beef flavor at all. I know majority of pho in Hong Kong is not authentic, but at least make the soup hot.
Cold Vermicelli with Lemongrass Beef ($62). The vermicelli was chewy and the sauce was ok. But the lemongrass eef?? I could hardly taste any of the lemongrass flavor. And the beef was so tough, I chewed forever and feared I wouldn't be able to digest it later.
The person next to me paid more as they didn't tell him he could order from the lunch set. The look he gave was absolute disgust at how much he paid for such lackluster Vietnamese. I felt the same and we paid less. Food was mediocre. Service was friendly but I won't be back. Especially if they add service charge on top.
