The buzz was on 2 months ago when Caffe Habitu decided to open right at this spot...Right side by side with Starbucks and Pacific Coffee, I thought, the race is definitely on from now on. Turned out it won't, as they all target different clientele, I realized. Starbucks has the global fame of serving extra fat (cream) with darker roasts, while Pacific Coffee has a standard roast throughout and a more conservative choices of lattes and snacks available. Caffe Habitu, however, is a small establish
Going through a long list of beverage selections from the top. Coffees from Fresh Brew ($23) to Cappucino Brulee ($33) and Espresso (#13, solo) are all made from coffee beans from Trieste, Italy. Specialty drinks include a selections of Caffe Freddo (iced coffees, $26 - $34), Cioccolata ($27 to $38) and teas to choose from. You may need several visits and several friends to share different drinks to get your favorite, unless you have the knack to choose favorites. Habitu's Caffe Mocha ($32) is outstandingly light on the combination as chocolate, espresso and milk are concocted magically in harmony. A simple chocolate syrup swirl is just the art you need for a morning buzz. Note for two particular special drinks on the coffee menu: "Espresso Romano" (with a potent sharpness of lemon zest) and "Latte Di Rose" ($32), a rare find using Italian Rose Syrup mixed into Espresso topped with whipped cream. The sweet taste of rose petals offset the creaminess of the dairy component, which in turn compliments the strong coffee. The mixture is rather strange on the first taste but if it's the floral essence that you're after, then this is the beverage for you.
Good selections of dainty looking cakes (ranging from $28 per slice) and 3 specialty selections currently on promotion. A mille-feuille type dessert with plenty of blueberries did not catch my attention as much as the nut-coated brownie pyramid. It is the "Temptation" ($32) that caught my breath on my visit. A round cylinder-shaped dessert with chocolate cake setting the bottom, with filling made of hazelnut mousse and chocolate mousse on the outside. Caramelized hazelnuts are blended in throughout the two mousses. The top is coated with a chocolate mirror glaze and a delicate crunch of almond meringue. I could hear the women next to me chatting over the zesty passionfruit cheesecake and Bacon and onion quiche, served warmed from the counter. Looking at the menu there are salads, paninis and pastas and pizzas in mealy portions made to order for customers. A seasoning station can be seen behind the counter where the cutlery are placed with napkins and to-go necessities.
The decor of Caffe Habitu creates a harmonious ambience of a coffee-hub, Italian style. Casual wall drawings and comfy leather seats are the keys, A spot of green marked the division between the front and the back where the wall of books and publications are. The brown couches are especially comfortable while you sit and sip your favorite coffee and nibble on cakes. Don't forget the attentive staff who will need no summoning to attend to order. Friendly service is always an impeccable element here, and not to mention a light background mandolin music playing some classic favorite Italian tunes like "O Sole Mio", which you will find yourself humming along in no time. The drawback of Habitu may just be the too all-round hospitable environment here, it urges you to stick around for just a little longer, and you just might.
