Went lunching at one of the more famous Chinese restaurants nearby, ended up sorely disappointed. Half-full and dissastisfied, we decided to venture into this joint.
One quick look at the menu revealed that there was nothing special, unlike the photos at the window or the unequivocal recommendation by my friend.
As soon as the dishes started arriving, I knew my initial impression was way off. The first one to arrive was cow's tripe in curry sauce. Unlike the over-bleached version commonly found elsewhere, this one was yellowish with some brownish/blackish areas scattered throughout. The taste itself was already very impressive on its own but when complimented by the curry sauce which came in a separate bowl, this dish was almost the best I have ever tasted. The sauce has a strong aroma and the level of spicyness just right - very different from the pungent Indian version or the domesticated Chinese version; it tasted more like the Malaysian/Singaporean curries commonly found in the South East Asia countries. Then came the curried chicken wings. Even though the chicken itself was of the frozen kind, the meat was very tender and full of flavour. With a different curry sauce, the two were a perfect match. Then came the beef briskets, another curry sauce not dissimilar to the one for the tripes but equally delicious. I am sure the curry dishes would go extremely well with both rice and noodles but the bread served here, 豬仔包, were warm, fresh, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. For a restaurant of this level and size, their bread is a must-try!
While the other dishes were not unworthy of mention, they were rather bland by comparison. Afterall this place is famous for its curries and I don't want to dwell into the non-curry dishes.
