Second visit to Carbone and still impressed me with their flavours!

Loved the Bread Basket. The tomato-flavored bread is absolutely delicious, and the garlic-infused crispy bread is also incredibly tasty.

Some ham and cauliflower came along with the bread basket, The tangy and spicy cauliflower is a fantastic way to stimulate your appetite.

The thinly sliced beef carpaccio is fresh and nicely seasoned. The flavors are on point, and it's a delightful dish.

The broccoli is well seasoned, and I especially loved the touch of lightly squeezed lemon that adds a refreshing flavor to it. Highly enjoyable!

Spicy Rigatoni Vodka Pasta-The sauce on the spicy rigatoni vodka pasta is really tasty. It's a flavorful combination that hits the spot.

Fantastic atmosphere filled with celebration and joy was a plus. Staffs are friendly and exudes positive vibes, making every visit a memorable experience.

After repeatedly coming across this restaurant, whether it be through browsing on OpenRice or seeing it pop up on my Instagram reels as I scroll, my curiosity has been piqued. The fact that I don't reside in Hong Kong on a regular basis has only intensified my desire to experience what this restaurant has to offer.
As we walked into the restaurant, a captivating Western European ambiance embraced us, evident in its charming interior design. The staff welcomed us warmly and to our delight, a complimentary bread board arrived shortly, setting the stage for a truly enjoyable dining experience..

My friends and I ordered 2 starters (antipasti) to share which were the Carpiccio Piemontese and Octopus Pizzaiolo. Then, we each ordered a different pasta as the portions didn't seem very sharable through glances from other tables. To finish we ordered two desserts to share as recommended by the service staff.

Starters:
The complimentary bread was a delightful start, served warm and seasoned well. However, the starters didn't quite stand out in any remarkable way. It seemed that perhaps Carbone intentionally set the bar low at the beginning of the meal.

Main course (Pasta dishes):
The spicy Rigatoni Vodka, a renowned staple of the restaurant, came highly recommended by friends even before we entered. True to their words, it did not disappoint. The pasta was cooked to perfection, with an ideal al dente texture, while the combination of spiciness and carefully selected herbs enhanced the overall flavors. Couldn't speak for the other pasta dishes my friends ordered, but from their comments it was just a bit better than average and after tasting the spicy Rigatoni Vodka they regretted not ordering it.

Dessert:
After chossing the desserts from the wheeled-in cart, we opted for a slice of tiramisu and lemon cheesecake. The tiramisu, while enjoyable, fell slightly below the average of the tiramisus I've tasted before. The coffee flavor it exuded didn't quite meet my expectations. However, the lemon cheesecake was a true standout. It ranked among one of the best cheesecakes I've ever had and could be said to be similar to the cheesecake factory.

Conclusion:
The restaurant provides a delightful ambiance, making it a suitable choice for enjoying a meal or drinks during a weekend outing or after-work gathering. Despite my personal feeling of slight overrating, influenced by my high expectations, I would still consider returning if the occasion called for it.

They serve you a piece of cheese from their 18-month-aged Grana Padano cheese wheel. The taste is sharp and pungent but melts in your mouth nonetheless. A nice bite to get in between dishes.

I also want to take a moment to address the plates they use. Every single decorated plate is handmade out of ceramic. The designs are whimsical and Italian. The chips in them are NOT intentional but it adds to the characteristics. A kind waiter who goes by George also told me that every single Carbone restaurant uses these plates and the number behind them is the nth plate.

Bread basket

I had to write about their bread basket. Served warm with free refills!! This is where we get our money’s worth 🤪 sadly they don’t offer any olive oil and balsamic or butter. Only a few pieces of salami.

Their famous garlic bread is the epitome of crunchy and buttery goodness. The garlic is very aromatic and the baguette is crunchy but chewy and soft on the inside. I wished there are more parsley on top not only for a nicer appearance but also to balance out the oil with some herbs.

My favourite however is their focaccia. Extremely soft and chewy and pillowy. This thick piece of bread is so freaking good. The marinara sauce on top makes it taste like pizza and I absolutely love that. You can tell the bread was well prodded because of all the air bubbles and the volume it grew into. Wow. I ate 5 pieces without shame.

Last but not least is their sesame bread. Simple. Sadly, this was on the bottom of the basket so got a bit too soft and also it isn’t as hot as the other two 😔 Nonetheless, it tasted like normal bread and used this for Scarpetta (the Italian act of wiping clean one’s plate or bowl of sauces with a piece of bread) because of its blank canvas and it absorbed flavour well.

Caprese $308

The burrata has no flavour. The texture is very creamy and soft but lacks the milky taste of cream. The size is also quite small for the price. I’ve been to restaurants that serve a plumper one for much less.

However, the tomatoes are super delicious. A variety of red, yellow and green heirloom tomatoes as well as small plump ones. I love the salsa verde on top too. But, the sauce isn’t the spicy one we are familiar with, this is more like basil herb oil. Still, it was very refreshing to eat and it matched deliciously with the soft burrata.

I highly recommend making a toast (or sandwich) with their sesame bread. The bread also absorbs the basil oil and tomato juices so well so don’t forget to Scarpetta it!

Carpaccio Piedmontese $298

Very disappointing. I don’t know what I was expecting from this but it was not as good as other people said it was.

The beef is sliced oh so thinly that there is virtually no bite and texture to it. Like baby food. The salt levels are good but it was weirdly acidic…. The raw button mushrooms on top were also weird to me and my family (perhaps because we never eat raw mushrooms) and the texture was just not ideal with the walnuts. I guess this is the ‘Piedmont’ way. They also had a black winter truffle dressing on it which was very incongruous and just pushing their prices.

Because the beef is so thin, you need to cut 1/3 of it just for a decent spoonful so definitely not worth this price.

Spicy Rigatoni Vodka $278

The reason we came here and it did not disappoint!!! I was so excited to finally try the viral pasta all the way from New York.

There’s nothing special about this pasta, to be honest. Just tomato, cream and of course, vodka. But somehow these come together to form one of the best pasta I’ve ever had.

The texture is Al dente with just a tad bit under so it’s quite firm and chewy, my family even thought it was a bit undercooked but I (a lover of hard, chewy things) loved this. A few of the rigatoni also got sauce snuggled up into the hole which made for a delicious bite.

The taste is uncanny. It also has quite a strong spice to it from the Calabrian chillis and some people couldn’t really take it but I myself loved the heat. It pairs well with the creamy sauce. Speaking of the sauce, I don’t know if it was intentional or not but it was rather thick and lumpy. Delicious but not very smooth and vicious, nonetheless, I still wiped every last bit off the plate with some bread and enjoyed it happily.

I also enjoyed the sweet and caramelised tomato pieces, perhaps they were sun-dried?

I wish the portion was bigger because this is so good but also for the price but each of us got to try a small bite and I ate the rest which was like 2 forks.

Steak Diane $688

Chef Jack said that every table orders this so we had to try it out. Sadly, it was pretty average.

The presentation is lovely with the ribeye and sauce, defiantly unlike rustic steakhouses. I asked for it to be medium-rare and impressionably, it was. The beef is very tender but a bit chewy in the centre (my bad for ordering too rare haha) but needs salt. So I ate this with a small piece of the Grana Padano cheese and it made it much better.

They say it is a cacciatore sauce but it lacks the vibrant red and tomatoes to be called that. Moreover, a Steak Diane is normally served with a sauce made from mustard, Worcestershire, cream, and cognac which this is. The cognac made it bitter and rich but balanced out with the salty and umami Worcestershire sauce and the sharp mustard.

The portion is quite big (finally well deserved for its price) and each person got 2-3 pieces.

Carrot cake $258

We chose 2 desserts from their dessert trolley (ps. those are all styrofoam) and this was one of them.

The presentation is beautiful with the tall carrot cake surrounded by dollops of cream cheese frosting. However, this meant we had to place the frosting on the cake ourselves for the full experience.

Taste-wise, this is the best carrot cake I’ve ever had. It is not overly sweet with a strong aroma and the taste of warm spices. Perfect to welcome winter in. The cream cheese frosting is also not too sweet and very light and fluffy. I really enjoyed this but it did get too sweet after a few bites. Next to this is scoop ginger ice cream which is perhaps my favourite part of the whole dessert. So refreshing and spicy that it awakens your mouth. The cake did get a bit dry at some point but I simply used it to mop up the melted ice cream and it was the bomb.

The portion is very large and worth this price. We shared this amount with 4 people and each got a generous portion.

Also, they served the desserts without clearing our plates first which was very annoying as we were celebrating a birthday and wanted to take a video of the cake being served but the table was messy and they had to scramble to take away plates when another staff was singing. I will look pass this as they were quite busy that night but what else do they expect? They are busy every night.

Ferraro Rocher Cake $258

I asked the chef which dessert was his favourite and this was it. Surprisingly, it may be even better than the carrot cake.

This cake is composed of a hazelnut mousse, chocolate cake and Nutella buttercream, all on top of a crunchy chocolate wafer. This may sound very sweet but it was well-balanced with the hazelnuts. The vanilla ice cream on top also becomes homogeneous with the cake and moistens everything and making it taste much better. I really enjoyed the crunchy wafer layer against the smooth buttercream and mousse. All in all, this dessert has very nice contrasting textures but is definitely heavier on the chocolate side. Whereas the carrot cake had very good flavours but one-dimensional textures.

A very hefty portion and definitely worth this price. The slice is about 2 inches tall and 5 inches wide so it can be shared with everyone. But this cake was so good I think I could have eaten the whole thing. Whereas the carrot cake got very sweet after a while even though it was spice oriented.

Limoncello

We ended the night with a limoncello digestif and this is not for the weak-hearted. They say it is light on the alcohol but one sniff and you will already have headaches. I drank a whole gulp and I felt my pulse on my brain. The taste is not bad, it smells very tart and sour but the taste of vodka overpowers it by a ton. House-brewed and a nice Italian gesture by the staff.

However, they actually gave it to us at the doors of the elevator because they forgot to when we asked for the bill.

💬 Overall, I highly recommend this place for celebrations as every other table was celebrating a birthday and the staff would dim the lights and sing a deep-throated song. The restaurant though is very loud, especially because the tables are close together so I don’t recommend it if you are looking for a quiet night. Food-wise, they are either good or not good, if I do come back, it will only be for the bread basket, pasta and desserts. But I might not as the prices are still making me uncomfortable.

💭 Hands down my favourite item of the evening! I had a hard time choosing between this and their carrot cake and I definitely made the right choice! The cake itself was amazing! So many different elements, flavours and texture all at once! I could roughly distill a delicious layer chocolate ganache coating as well as multiple layers of hazelnut mousse, hazelnut crisps, brownie crisps, dark chocolate cake and a piece of thin dark chocolate. A real piece of art that can only be created in a professional kitchen. The ice cream and sauce underneath was just the perfect cherry on top!

The carpaccio was very fresh and rich in seasoning. The truffle oil added was just the right amount, bringing out a rich scent and taste without eliminating the carpaccio’s natural taste. The portion was just enough to be shared among two.

This dish was what i keep hearing my friends talk about, and finally had the chance to give it a try. For starts, IT WAS SOOO GOOD! The rigatoni texture gave abit of chewiness without being too hard and chewy, yet not soft. For this dish its not that spicy, yet it does sting a tiny bit after each bite. You can literally taste the vodka in it. The portion was an enjoyable portion. Definitely recommend you try it out if you plan on going to Carbone.

Sirloin Diana

The Sirloin Diana i had was done as medium rare. The steak itself was juicy and rich in flavor. Supposedly the sauce was somewhat a more chinese twist of oyster sauce, not my most favourable sauce but yet still okay. The shrooms on the top yet soaks too much of the sauce and gets a bit too salty. Overall, its a good dish.

The Lemon Cheesecake was what i longed for. Its super delicious. The portions of the lemon sauce, cheesecake and its crust are at the best ratio it can be in. Each bite starts off with a sweet and sour kind of taste from the lemon sauce, followed by the NY cheesecake flavor. The lemon sauce helps open up more of your appetite to fill in yet one more bite. The cheesecake is rich yet not too heavy, mixes well with the lemon flavor. The crust is one i need to comment on. Usually when i come across a cheesecake crust its either really hard where u have to use bit of force to break it with ur fork, or its really soggy and its just everywhere. But the chrust for this bad-boy, was insanely perfect. I could slide my fork from top to bottom and cut out a piece without putting in effort, yet the crust remains really crispy and tender. A definite recommend.

Carbone had excellent customer service and the environment was really good. Although you would possibly hear like 6-7 times of the staff singing happy birthday to different tables, but its a happy experience.

Definitely give it a try for your next occasion to celebrate

As soon as I sat down, the waiter served a small chunk of parmesan cheese from the wheel close to the entrance. It was heavenly and I savored every bite. Complimentary garlic bread and salami were also served. The garlic bread was too crispy but the salami was great.

Having heard many great things about the spicy rigatoni vodka, I had high expectation for it going into it - and I wasn't disappointed. The rigatoni was the definition of comfort food. It was chewy, a little bit spicy to tingle your tongue and absolutely creamy. It was the feeling of being 10 and your mother tucking you in to sleep at night after a long day out with your friends in the sun.

The rest of the food wasn't as great however. The chicken parmesan was alright. The chicken was fresh, but was a little dry. I would also prefer if it had more breading and be fried to a golden crispier crumby coating. Additionally, in contrast to most reviews I've read, I wasn't blown away by the meatballs. Other than its generous size, there's not much else that I can say about the meatball. I much prefer Pirata's meatballs. The chocolate icecream wasn't a stand out as well, but was a sweet way to round off the meal.

The service was great and attentive, but not exceptional. There was a mosquito flying about, but other than that, hygiene and social distancing measures were taken seriously (as I dined during the covid-19 period). The New York-Italian decor - mahogany wood panelling, checkered floor tiles, was a feast for the eyes and I very much enjoyed the old school atmosphere you see in mafia/organized crime movies like The Godfather. Despite Hong Kong's widely diversified gastronomic delights, there aren't many other restaurants that are quite like Carbone. And as such, Carbone stands out from the rest rather memorably.

Carbone is definitely worth a visit, if not only for the rigatoni. On my next visit to Carbone, I would definitely have the rigatoni again, skip the meatballs and the chicken parmesan, and try the ribeye diana instead.

Added an extra $78 for the Mario’s meatball (cause come on who would say no to meatballs🤪). I would say it’s pretty expensive for a meatball but it comes in this gigantic size. Covered with fresh tomato sauce, the meatball is incredibly moist and juicy, absolutely delicious. It is one hell of a meatball. The best bite of the entire meal.

The main and dessert are nice but kinda underwhelming compared to the pasta and meatball.

The grilled salmon is succulent and perfectly cooked but lacking on flavor.

While no one will ever dislike a nutella gelato, it’s indulgent and chocolatey with a little sea salt and cocoa nibs on top that is all so good, just slightly too sweet for me.

Not the best ever Italian meal I’ve had, but the pasta and meatballs are certainly impressive. They’re signatures for a reason. A great lunch with expected passionate Italian style hospitality.

A warm welcome greeting from the team always comes along with craved Parmesan cheese, salami and bread basket. Okay I am a bread basket lover, I always believe if you serve a good bread basket your food will not be too bad ! Yes, I love their bread basket here, they serve hot bread here ! My favorite their garlic bread, crispy and very flavorful, yes it gets your fingers pretty oily ! But it’s something you would want more !

Caprese; made with fresh heirloom tomato, burrata and salsa verde. It is indeed a very simple dish, therefore fresh ingredients are vital ! Love their tomato’s, they are fresh and crispy !!!! Some are sweet some are a little sour but perfectly balanced ! Yes and it’s pretty photogenic!

Wild prawn cocktail made with Kuruma prawn serve with lemon and cocktail sauce ! Fresh big prawns with crispy texture on the meat ! Pretty simple and refreshing !

Tortellini al ragu, made with sheep milk ricotta cheese, bolognese sauce and topped with parmensan. If you like ricotta cheese this is what you should order. The cheese didn’t have a strong aroma, it was soft and smooth texture wrapped in the perfect size ! Whereas the bolognese sauce wasn’t chunky like how you would imagined ! There was a slight beef aroma and once it’s eaten with the ricotta it was perfect.

Who will say no to dessert ! I always love their lemon cheesecake here ! It’s a soft and silky type of cheesecake, not too sweet but with a lemon tone aftertaste ! It’s not a super heavy cake !

Carbone is one of my go to places for good pasta, chill 1950s New York vibes, and a nice glass of wine. I enjoy the vibe here, friendly service, warm colors deco with comfortable sofas, family style tablecloth, music, and chatters. One of the best things here is the warm breadbasket, WARM being the key! Most places will give you a breadbasket that is room temperature or even cold. To me, this shows that they care about the quality of their food and it is always a good sign. They also give you a plate of parmesan cheese to munch on, that makes me so happy!

Of course, they have amazing food, and that is why I keep coming back. I tried this tuna dish for the first time, I thought it was not as impressive as their other dishes, but it is of good quality, fresh tuna with pickled eggplant at the bottom, it was surprisingly refreshing.

Meatballs! One of the main reason I come to Carbone! These meatballs are SO GOOD. They are not too dense, light and airy with good quality meat, covered with a layer of tangy tomato puree sauce, which balanced well with the fattiness of the meatball.

Spicy Rigatoni Vodka

This spicy rigatoni vodka is their signature dish, and it is one of my favorite! This dish is so full of flavor! It might be too salty to some but I love it, I like my food more flavored and complex! This is not too spicy but has just a hint of it to enhance the flavor, along with a rich and thick creamy tomato base sauce with homemade al dente rigatoni. I get this dish every time I come and it is always good!

Oh the homemade lemoncello! This drink is offered at the end of dinner, and the first time I had it, I did not know how to feel. It is a very sweet drink but it is also very strong! Our server smiled when he saw our faces after the first sip. I have started liking it after a few tries and it is now one of the things I look forward to!

By the way, their tiramisu is amazing too, I did not take a picture of it this time but they are delicious!

Carbone is not cheap, and the portions are relatively small, but I still think their quality makes up for it, and the vibe makes it worth it.
