Sauteed Mushrooms, Melted

Terrine。

Pain Perdu

Soba

Oh! NO….

Located down a small side street, this area is starting to see new restaurants. This restaurant is open lunch and dinner except for Sunday (dinner) and Monday (lunch and dinner).

Restaurant
A former tea house, 2 floors and some outdoor seating, it's cute, not formal and best for an informal chat, tables are close together. If there's a negative (classic Hong Kong) too much bright overhead lighting (no one on earth looks good with overhead lighting) nor is there any music playing (would help set the tone).

Food
We ordered the potato croquettes a crispy fried ball of mashed potatoes served with a spicy "ketchup" but was more just a spicy sauce (not much tomato taste). Served hot and attractively, the sauce was quite nice but the potatoes themselves seemed little more than just that.

Next up was a trio of Middle Eastern dips (3 to select) with a freshly made chapti. Again nicely presented, the babaganoush lacked the required smokiness of eggplant and it little bland (we added a touch of salt). The roasted red pepper dip was excellent and spot on. Finally, simple hummus was sadly too think and more pasty than a dip (we added olive oil to try and thin it down).

The Paneer was the last hot dish and it was again attractively presented, the serving size was rather modest and I would deem it good (though not great).

Finally, dessert, an Indian rice pudding was likely the best dish of the evening, rice, coconut milk, nuts and spices it had a good mixture of sweet and spices with a little added crunch.

Various organic wines were available by the glass for HK$60.

Service
The staff was quite attentive and friendly. It's a new place and they were open to comments & suggestions. Tables are rather close together, think more coffee shop or tea house (how surprising).

Summary
The bill for 2 came to HK$600 which we concluded was a tad high, considering it's non-central location. None of the dishes were truly amazing and in fact, we were tad hungry leaving. If you're in the neighborhood, worth stopping in, but I probably wouldn't travel a great distance to eat here.

Hiding away in an alley off Third Street in Sai Ying Pun, the country-style boutique restaurant and workshop is surrounded by shades of green from the potted herbs and plants at its doors.

Once inside one is welcomed by the restaurant's warm, inspired-by-nature decorations of antique chairs, pink wallpaper with little birds on them, and a chandelier decorated with grass!

But what keeps me coming back is, of course, the food. Founder and head chef of GP, Peggy Chan, a Le Cordon Bleu graduate with experience of working in numerous famous restaurants and hotels across the globe, has found her true passion of promoting a healthy, green lifestyle through her culinary arts. So apart from holding the reins in the kitchen, she is spreading her word (or 'peas', in GP terminology), through various workshops and cooking classes held upstairs in the restaurants on weekends.

But wait...when you go visit GP remember to spend a couple of minutes savoring the adorable hand-drawn menu which details the ingredients, their vegan- or buddhist-friendliness etc. of each and every dish.

Salads/Starters
Quinoa Salad. Dried Fruits and Hazelnuts
This led to my first encounter with GP when this dish was chosen as a 'charity dish' and part of the proceeds went to Table for Two, a charity to help fund lunch programs in developing countries.
The salad has boiled quinoa (a grain-like plant commonly eaten as a cereal in South America), dried cranberries, dried figs, walnuts and hazelnuts, lettuce complete with an orange-based dressing. The crispiness of the veggies, the crunchiness of the nuts, the sweetness of the dried fruits and the dressing all go with each other very well, and the quinoa makes it more filling and is a meal in itself. No wonder it has established itself as a GP signature.

Mains

Inspired by her travels, Peggy puts different cuisines onto the menu including western, Japanese, Thai and Indian, do one is spoilt for choice.

Palak Paneer or Tofu/Mushroom with Homemade Chapati
The Palak Paneer is made amarath in a soy-based curry with chunks of tofu inside, so it is lighter in texture and tastes milder than the kind you have in usual Indian restaurants. The homemade chapati is whole wheat, so it's hearty, wheaty and consistently healthy as the palak paneer.

Japanese Cold Soba. Seared Marinated Tofu. Hijiki Salad. Tahini Miso Dressing
Hmm...I'd call it a Japanese garden in a bowl! There are homemade ("homegrown" I guess?) sprouts --> yes they grow those on the balcony, hijiki + wakame i.e. Japanese seaweed salad, seared organic tofu drizzled with a specially made tahini miso dressing sitting on a bed of soba buckwheat noodles. It's a very clean noodle dish bursting with natural umami. I have tried to reproduce it at home afterwards but couldn't reach the same level as GP of course...perhaps the secret lies in the tangy tahini (white sesame) miso sauce?

Signature Mixed Mushroom & Asparagus Linguine with White Truffle Oil
This one is a pretty straighforward pasta using whole wheat linguine. The linguine is as a result a bit stiffer than regular linguine, but I think it's a bit too heavy on the Parmesan cheese and the truffle oil smell is masked. Although the portion is quite generous, the price is a bit steep for this one.

Apart from what's on offer on the regular menu, GP offers daily lunch specials like Black Peppercorn Tofu Stirfry with Steamed Brown Rice that usually comes with a coffee or tea. Brown rice is a staple in GP (even in desserts!) and this dish was one of the rarer occasions that I see HK-styled 碟頭飯 dishes at GP. Not that it was bad but I certainly would like to see more 'exotic' food here haha...

Desserts

Basically only two are on the menu:

Raw Blueberry Cheese Cake 藍莓椰子凍餅 $68 and
Brown Rice Pudding. Raisins, Coconut and Almonds

The Raw Blueberry Cheese Cake is one of the things that brought GP to fame. The no-cook cake actually has no dairy product in it. The base is made from almonds, dates and shredded coconut, and on the top, while more appropriately called a mousse rather than 'cheese' cake, is made from coconut meat, soaked cashew, maple syrup and blueberries. Not only does it look fabulous, it also tastes great. The biscuit-like base is crunchy, and the smooth, velvety coconut blueberry mousse is light in texture with a natural fruity sweetness. You won't believe it's that good without having to use any butter or cream.

As I said, brown rice is a GP staple and here is an example. A fusion between a British rice pudding and Indian desserts, it is served in a nice copper pot. Short grain brown rice is cooked in coconut milk and infused with spices like cinnamon and cardamom, and then sprinkled with almonds and pistachio. It is a more refreshing twist of overly sweet traditional Indian desserts, but since it is quite substantial remember to save some stomach space for it.

Yet there are a whole lot of "off-menu" dessert items to be explored:

Chocolate Fudge Cake with Cashew Cream $62
There was a time when the Raw Blueberry Cheese Cake was sitting in the fridge waiting for some final touch ups, here is the solution to satisfy craving guests. Again this is something that doesn't quite live up to its name: instead of being a fudge cake the texture was indeed more like a brownie. But worry not, it is still very tasty. It's dense, moist and sweet, and of course the chocolate flavor is well there. You can just indulge without guilt. Frosting is made of cashew nuts which is an important ingredient in GP's desserts as it gives a rich and smooth texture and flavor that in some way mimics dairy cream.

Raw Cacao Nib Truffle $25
Raw food is one of the key elements in GP's cuisine especially in desserts. I have had a couple of raw chocolate truffles elsewhere, and GP's piece is the best executed so far. I can't tell exactly all the ingredients in it but from what saw and tasted it should include raw chocolate (no doubt), flaxseeds (maybe), almonds, pumpkin seeds and the all-important dates that gives sweetness without added sugar. It's dense yet not doughy, and it's more 'chocolaty' than the fudge cake.

Fresh Fig Napolean with Rose Water, Maple-whipped Cashew Cream, Pistachio and Coconut Palm Sugar Crumble $85
I saw this on somebody's Facebook and have since been dying to try it out. Here Peggy puts her French fine dining training into good use by baking filo pastry with coconut palm sugar, sandwiching between layers of locally produced fresh figs and maple syrup infused cashew cream and topping with crushed pistachios. I think it can be served in a five-star hotel restaurant for double the price and have people lining up for it! A picture says a thousand words; but it's worth the trip trying it out for yourself.

Drinks

No health-conscious restaurant is complete without some wholesome juices and smoothies. (These are all juices squeezed from seasonal produce. I haven't tried the smoothies yet as I'm too full every time to have them.)

Digestion Booster: Carrot, Lemon, and Ginger
De-Bloater: Apple, Kale, Celery, Cucumber, Lemon
Mean Green: Pear, Green Apple, In-Season Leafy Greens, Parsley, Celery, Cucumber, and Ginger

GP also carries a range of specialty teas ($35), like Gypsy Rose Black Tea that comes in an absolutely adorable teapot and cup.

Strangely enough, as an avid coffee drinker I haven't had, even once, coffee at GP. FYI GP offers organic and fair trade tea and coffee, and those who are in the mood for some booze can choose from a list of organic and biodynamic wines and beers.

Although I haven't become an instant convert of vegetarianism - who knows, if I can have such nice veggie food every day I'd be glad becoming one - meanwhile I'll keep coming back to Grassroots Pantry for more, now that they're going to roll out some new items for the fall season!

Read about the restaurant and the owner. Intrigued and looking forward to seeing it myself: people cook with a heart, and passionate about their food.

What we ordered: Singature Quinoa salad, Tofu crouquettes, Green curry veggie, Mixed mushroom linquine

Salad: Very fresh, very nice, and taste authentic (eat slow and you will taste what they meant to be)
Crouquettes: Nice compliment to cold appetizers. Taste good on its own even without the homemade ketchup
Green curry: A bit disappointing as the spicyness overpowered the other tastes. Veggie a bit too little and feel short changed.
Linguine: Nice. Texture: not prefectly al dente but still better than a lot of Italian restaurants. Very aromatic, well balanced in terms of taste, excellent mushroom.

Only reservation is it is hard to get a table and a bit pricy, portions are just right for light eaters. Could cost a lot if one goes for a full 5 course meal.

Highly recommended to those who prefer tasting the food itself than the seasoning/dressings.

Chocolate cake!

Dhal

Raita=yogurt dressing with cucumber and mint
Baba ghanoush=eggplant dressing with tahini
中間:Muhammana?=tomato?
Hummus=chickpeas dressing with tahini

Refreshing taste=]
吃的時候並不知道那是Babaghanoush=eggplant dressing

Hummus

In terms of service, the restaurant still seems to be sorting out their systems - a lot of things feel quite manual and don't feel like they're operating at a "commercial" pace (order taking, food preparation, etc.). The water glasses are also so tiny that you constantly need them refilled - they maybe fit 100-150ml each? But the service is not fast enough to keep the glasses filled ... So I think they should just provide larger glasses!

Anyway, the food is good and worth a try - both the quinoa salad and cold soba were tasty!

I found myself obssessing over the kitschy decor that complemented the bright windows/ambience so effortlessly. Greeted by fresh flowers and antiques at every turn, its evident that each piece of decor tells a story - lots of Eastern and South Asian influences.

Now for the food: I opted for the set lunch, and relished the idea of devouring vegetable makhani. Now normally I find myself struggling to keep my eyes open after consuming any type of curry, but after my dish at Grassroots, I didn't feel the least bit tired. Delicious food without the oily and rich feeling.

I've now been to Grassroots Pantry 4 times since it opened (my latest visit was last Saturday). It's become my favorite restaurant here! The setting is lovely, cosy, and unpretentious and the food is DELICIOUS. My favorite dishes are:

1) the linguini (creamy and earthy - a must try if you love mushrooms!)

2) the quinoa salad (fresh and light, with great complementary textures from the chewy quinoa, crisp greens, zesty cranberries, and rich walnuts)

3) the dal (THE BEST IN HK, in my opinion. And I've heard this from Indian friends who have been searching for a truly delicious moong dal here)

4) the palak paneer/tofu (warm, comforting, and just spicy enough)

4) the de-bloater and mean green (green juices at their best! I love that they use local Chinese kale)

5) the raw blueberry cheesecake (sweet but not overly so - all the indulgence without the guilt)

I'm so thrilled that more socially conscious, veg restaurants are popping up around HK. The price point is also great - moderate prices for food that is made with all organic and local produce!!!! This one is truly worth a visit, and I'm betting it's already become a favorite among people who want Hong Kong to grow into a place filled with individuals who do our part to alleviate the global environmental crisis, by buying and eating local and sustainable. Grassroots Pantry is also just a place where anyone - vegetarian and meat-lover alike - can enjoy delicious food, lovingly prepared and served.

First impression was great with nice decor, very cute and hand-sketched menu!

BUT...it was a very disappointing experience...

First it came the 3 juices and the 2 smoothies, the taste were SO AWFUL that we cant bear to drink even it comes in only like half of the glass size ( under 200ml I think) !!!!
Mean Green: Pear, Green Apple, In-Season Leafy Greens, Parsley, Celery $48
It's with very weird taste of leaves and you cant taste any pear or greenapple, it also comes with a weird spice that is hot and strange! the green glass itself looks very scary too!
Chocolate Dream: Banana, Blueberries, Strawberries, In-Season Leafy Greens, $55
It's not like smoothies at all and it is like in muddy texture! it can't split even the glass was hit on the table by the waiter!

the taste is SO STRANGE we all agree to say!
NEVER try the drinks if you are brave enough to taste something that s weird!

only the potato Croquettes (3pcs, $68) and the Thai Veggie Green Curry and the mushroom Linguine were acceptable but not too great either.
OVerall, it's overpriced and comes in a very small portion! Not sure if we really cant adapt the organic food here or I'm doubting if they have really taste the drink and the food before it comes to serve?
When the owners or waiters seeing customer with unhappy face or seeing the plates or glasses that are just left like "uneaten". They should find out what goes wrong and simply just taste the food or ask for opinions for improvement.

Was happy when the plate arrived. It looked extremely healthy. The veggie patty reminded me of something I saw in the kitchen every morning - whatever fibre is left from juicing a carrot! Confirmed it to be exactly that, mixed with brown rice and some spices. The avocado mayo was a healthy alternative to the traditional mayonnaise. The patty itself was quite salty. It wouldve been alright if the patty came on buns, but this one came on a small piece of pita bread. The corn salsa wasn't much of a salsa in that it consisted of lettuce and grilled corn. There was a minimal amount of dressing, if any at all, but you could taste the sweetness and juiciness of corn.

It smelled amazing. Hot, creamy, with a sprinkling of white truffle oil which further accentuated the fragrant smell which I love. Mixed mushrooms included shiitake, portabello, probably oyster mushrooms too. In any event, they were delicious, and there was a lot, considering the size of the dish. The only complaint is the overcooked pasta. Could've been more al dente. Otherwise, the seasoning was great, not too salty, and did not overpower the wonderful mushroom tatse. Asparagus went very well with the mushrooms, offering a bit of crunch and texture. It was also very sweet, and juicy. A juicy asparagus - where'd you find that?

Hot Cappuccino
Came with muscavado sugar? Tasted normal, but could be hotter. A hot coffee is always better than a lukewarm one.

Conclusion:
Pretty nice restaurant but I can't afford to make this a regular dining place, literally! But I wouldn't question the environmental friendliness, health benefits and the organic goodness of the food offered. Do try if you happen to be nearby.

Some PR from Vero Chocolates came in just when we were about to leave. Asked if Grassroots would like to put hot chocolate on the drinks menu. 'We only use 100% cacao fair trade coffee' was the reply. Encouraging that they stick to their principles! :) See http://www.grassrootspantry.com/slow-eats/ for more deets! :)
