Wong Chuk Hang (WCH) is gonna be big, if any indication of the restaurants and hotels beginning to pop up in this industrial area are any indication. So, after seeing a smattering of local foodies posting in WCH, I strapped on my ‘big boy’ boots, got on the #5 Minibus from CWB, and rolled into WCH, notebook, iPhone and appetite in hand.
3/3rds seems to be one of the pioneering eateries in the area, and it felt almost surreal, searching among the many industrial buildings (and smelling the industrial smells) to find it. After a 22-floor elevator ride (during which I had my fingers crossed, because that elevator is OLD!), my eyes awoke to a beautifully decorated venue with a lovely view of Ocean Park and the mountains beyond. So far, so good, right?
Knowing that I was on a bit of a WCH food tour, I didn’t want to gorge myself at 3/3rds, and it ended up being a good thing, because their pizzas are not exceptionally large, and not exceptionally filling. I would categorise it as more of a ‘snack’ than anything, which isn’t all bad. After perusing the menu, I settled on the Chorizo and Smashed Tomatoes Pizza (138HKD) as my sole dish from 3/3rds.
There are so many wonderful kinds of pizza, and thin crust Italian-style is definitely a good one; however, I discovered that the crust was almost too thin, especially since the smashed tomatoes (which were basically halved, then placed fresh on the pizza to cook in the oven) weighed down the pizza and fell all over my plate while eating. The amount of cheese on the pizza wasn’t enough either, which made the pizza far from cohesive. I found it difficult to eat. Taste-wise, it was just ok, but the fact that the tomatoes had hardly reduced still frustrated me. I suggest smaller tomatoes in the future. The shining ingredient was the chorizo, and to improve value for money, I would have preferred more chorizo peppered throughout the pizza.
All in all, I was found wanting, but these are not difficult things to correct in order to discover an improved recipe. I’m sure 3/3rds will consider ways to improve their pies, especially with the WCH MTR opening date looming. Best of luck in the future…I’ll definitely pop back once the MTR has opened to see the results of their future efforts.
