It's a genuine rarity in HK to find a restaurant serving foreign food whose principal patrons are people from the country the food is from. And this place had quite the charm. The guy who seated me was laughing and joking with some of the patrons and literally everyone in the place when I showed up was still there when I left. So it had kind of a cafe feel (though not look) to it: people were there to socialize or just chill and surf the web on their phones.

All of the pictures on the menu have a duck leg, I got a duck leg, so did other patrons, so it looks like that's what's on offer. From the reading around I could do, the recipe involves boiling the duck with lemongrass, ginger, garlic and lime leaves, then deep frying it, smashing it with a mallot, and finally coating it in chili sauce.

The extensive preparation (boiling, frying, smashing) makes the duck fall-off-the-bone, but not especially tender, though not dry or tough either. Some of the edges are extremely crispy/ burnt. I tore all the meat off the bone, mixed it with the sauce, and ate it with the rice.

The green chili sauce did not taste how I expected it to. Mexican salsa verde has lots of tartness from tomatillos and lime juice, and when I look at a green chili sauce, I kind of naturally expect that. But this sauce-- more of a paste, was as far as I could tell just chili and as such reasonably bitter and extremely HOT.

This was one of the spicier things I've had in Hong Kong. It wasn't as hot as Heartbreak Noodle, but it was spicier than many a Sichuan dish I've had here. Luckily there was free refills of sweet tea (only $8).

I was very happy with my meal. If you don't like spice, you can get it without. I will definitely come back and try the chicken.

This is really disappointing because it tasted like Chinese borscht and it was a bit too sweet.
According to wiki, common ingredients are peanuts, young jackfruit, melinjo, bilimbi, chayote, sweetcorn, long beans, all cooked in tamarind-based soups and sometimes enriched with beef stock.

The portion size is decent in overall and we were pretty much satisfied at the end of the meal.

Also, the place is clean and air-conditioned. We came on Saturday around 12pm and the restaurant is not crowded.

There were two different pieces of tofu, one was an ordinary one and the other was a tofu patty.

I liked the tofu patty because its texture was mushy with an acidic taste.
As for the duck, it was nice but the meat was too dry otherwise I would have given this place top marks.
The dish costs $50 which is quite expensive for Indonesian food.

I took a look at the many big photos lining the glass door and windows and was temped to try. But the queue was too long and since I had an appointment for early dinner an hour later, I decided to pass and come back another time.

Fast forward a couple weeks, I managed to leave work early* and asked if a work friend would like to try this place together since we had been talking about Korean fried chicken. When we got to the shop, what a surprise there were no queues and there were two customers inside who coincidentally were Korean tourists lol. Anyways, we placed our orders fairly quickly as we were super hungry. Well, there were not many items on the menu anyways. We ordered the smashed chicken and duck, chicken satay, and beef soto soup.

* 730pm early ><

The smashed chicken was really nice. Crispy bits were sprinkled all over the chicken and added a nice texture to the rice. The chicken is much better than KFC and less fatty. It came with raw cabbage and cucumber which we didn't know if we should eat any of that but eventually did. Oh, we were even asked if we wanted extra chilli which we politely declined. Also on the wooden plate were two other fried tofu sides.

But the smashed duck was way better! The meat tasted more flavourful and also was so tender it fell off the bones. The same crispy sprinkle bits, fried tofus, and raw cabbage and cucumber accompanied the duck. There was kecap manis on the tables which we helped ourselves generously. The sweetness from the kecap manis and the chilli sauce elevated the smashed duck and chicken to the next level.

The satays were a little disappointing as the sauce was not the crunchy peanut paste I liked. The taste of the chicken was fine however and nicely charred.

This was surprisingly a very good meal though. This place is packed with domestic helpers on the weekends so be prepared to wait a long time for a seat.

The restaurant is very small, but very clean. It was so new that the seats still had the plastic wrap on them. A few photos of Indonesian life were scattered on the walls. The menu was in English, Chinese and Indonesian. Not sure what to order, we were suggested their signature dish: ayam penyet (smashed chicken). We added a beef soto and chicken satay.

Ayam penyet (or smashed chicken) was a quarter fried chicken, a piece of fried tempe (a fermented soybean cake), piece of tofu, some cucumbers and lettuce and rice. Though this was their signature dish, the chicken was dry and cold. It obviously was fried for quite some time. The fried tempe wasn't something I liked. It tasted like dried beans. The tofu tasted like Chiu Chow style tofu which I didn't mind but boyfriend didn't like.

It was to be served with a chili sauce. The staff gave us two to try. The one on the right was SUPER spicy. Boyfriend can eat spicy and even he starting downing his drink as fast as he could. But he did say it was fragrant though very spicy.

Beef soto was like a nonspicy curry soup with beef brisket and an egg inside. You were put your bowl of rice in it and eat it together. I wasn't much of a fan as I don't like to eat rice in  soup but boyfriend said it was good.

Chicken satay was the only item that was hot. The chicken was moist. The sauce was strange as it wasn't traditionally only peanut satay but it was mixed with teriyaki sauce, making it sweet. I wasn't too keen on the sauce as I like more traditinal satay sauce.

Though it was cheap for us, in terms of other Indonesian restaurants in the area, it would be considered pricey. Perhaps due to the fact it's from a chain restaurant in Indonesia? I won't return. Except maybe for the drink as that was pretty good and a lot more hygenic than the other Indoesian restaurants in Causeway Bay.

The resto has just opened less than a month. Thru a friend, I knew about it. This franchise is well known in Indonesia & Singapore. The owner said that it's a branch of Ayam Penyet Ria Singapore. Location: Causeway Bay MTR exit F1 Jardine's Crescent, if you see Forever 21 & a small lane next to it - that's Jardine's Crescent with many street vendors selling clothes, souvenirs, etc. Just walk along until you see another lane on the left, don't turn left, instead keep walking until around 10 shops

Small, air-conditioning restaurant can accommodate max of 25 people sitting. So it's not take-away place actually. We can sit & order food.

Main menu is Indonesian food such as Ayam Penyet (smashed chicken). A portion of HK$45 consists of 1/4 fried chicken, steamed rice, a slice of tempe/fermented soy product & tahu/tofu, sambal (chili), a little bit of raw veggie. Sambal is the main ingredient here. The spiciness is spicy enough to my standard who don't fancy so much spicy food. So I like to add "kecap manis" sweet soy sauce to make it mild. I noticed that when the chicken went cold after some time, it is still tender.

Other main menu: Bebek Penyet (smashed duck), Ikan Penyet (smashed fish), Soto Ayam (Indonesian chicken soup), Soto Daging (Indonesian beef soup), Rawon (Indonesian beef black soup), Sayur Asem (Indonesian vegetable soup with tamarind soup), Gado-gado (Indonesian vegetable salad with peanut sauce), Tempe Tahu Penyet (tempe is fermented soy product and tahu is tofu).

Most menu costs HK$45/portion includes rice, except the soup serves excludes rice. Good offer! I tried the chicken & duck penyet, and like both! Sayur asam is also yummy. Good combination is to have the chicken/duck plus sayur asam. However, one portion of chicken is already enough for one person. If you go there with a friend, then you can share the sayur asam as additional dish.

Favorite drink is Teh Botol which literally translated as bottled tea. This Indonesian tea is sweet and only can be found in Indonesian supermarkets in HK.

Many Indonesian staff working in nearby offices come here for lunch & even dinner.
