Overall our experience at Gough's was very good - with a few tweaks it could have been excellent and we would definitely go back to try again. The resto is located as the name suggests on Gough Street, which has evolved beyond recognition in the last 5 years, and is linked to the Oulton furniture/design store creating a great look, both externally and internally. All diners were seated upstairs and though there were seats downstairs this definitely felt like a lobby and we wouldn't be keen to sit

All diners were seated upstairs and though there were seats downstairs this definitely felt like a lobby and we wouldn't be keen to sit there. Upstairs the look was cool vintage with dark woods, chandeliers and deliberately mish-mashed crockery.
Welcome was good and the very professional bartender recommended and prepared strong and well made cocktails - great start.
The modern British food was generally v good, however whilst some dishes were excellent, others need a bit more work. The starters were mixed - the crab was excellent - fresh and with a great balance of flavours, however the langoustine was a let down - it was all very one note - the fish lacked flavour and sweetness, the cauliflower was bland and the fruit was neither sweet nor sharp resulting in a light but overall pretty bland dish.
For mains the unusually presented tartare was good however we would have preferred a more straightforward focus on meet as you would at a similar kind of place in London. The lamb was truly excellent - very pink, great flavour and nicely complemented with beets.
Deserts and cheese selection were both excellent though they could add more British cheese to the plate given their theme. Corkage is reasonable for this kind of place.
Service overall was excellent - welcome, knowledge, attentiveness generally great (our wine was pretty slow to come out as our waiter was ensconced at the bar chatting to some ladies but otherwise no complaints)
Overall Gough's feels like a proper restaurant you would expect in a major city. It's not one of the chain, flat-pack, pick a theme types that pepper the centre, nor one of the "Michelin"/not Michelin places but rather feels like a good, proper grown up restaurant with great ambiance and good (potentially great) food. We will go back.
