You can't really go wrong with a Michelin recommended place.
You also can't really go wrong with somewhere called Joyful Dessert.
Sure enough, Joyful Dessert House exceeded my expectations. Despite thinking that Napoleon pastry cakes, lava cakes, and waffles are becoming so early 2010's--with trends shifting towards Instagram goals of brown sugar milk tea, mille feuille crepe cakes, and perfectly sculpted kakigori--Joyful's menu has a variety of dessert options with lots of flavors including mango, pineapple, ube, matcha, and more.
The matcha lava cake looked a bit small and dry but turned out to be on point, not too sweet and with a strong matcha flavor. I love how you can mix and match with the little cup of red bean and green tea ice cream.
The ube waffle was one of the best waffles I've ever had, crispy and made with a batter robust with ube flavors. The yammy sweetness is just right, and you can add syrup to your liking. Like the green tea ice cream, the ube ice cream wasn't magical per se but a nice accompaniment. I was more impressed by the side of ube cream that was a deep hue of purple and correspondingly strong in ube.
I saw some people ordering the Napoleon (looks epic, a lot bigger than expected from the picture) and the souffle (a fluffy masterpiece). I don't think you can go wrong with anything here!
Joyful Dessert House is a sit-down place that's great for catching up with friends. It is a bit dark inside, and I think food pictures would look better if they got a lighting upgrade. Prices are a bit high ($62 per dessert plate, which is definitely enough for a meal in HK) but quality is good, and they have happy hour from 3-7pm offering a free drink with every dessert order. Joyful indeed.
