Summary: Fantastic steak with an extremely gregarious host makes for a delicious and memorable dinner. Wine is a bit pricey but the set menu is an excellent value for the quality and quantity. Le Moment has been on our list for a long time! It’s been on Peel for years now, and I’ve heard all kinds of interesting feedback, mainly about its host/owner Bob! I’ve heard he’s extremely outgoing and happy to discuss anything about the restaurant/meal, but also that he’s a bit much for some people. Was interested to see for myself.
Le Moment is a Western (French I guess) restaurant pared down to the essentials – salad/soup/main/wine. There’s a cheese platter and some add-ons, but this is essentially it.
I was a bit surprised about the wine: the house White is about 400/bottle, but the next bottle (and the first red) begins at 550-600, and thereafter up to 800-900. I love the fact that they use smaller, less-known vineyards (mainly from France and Italy), which no doubt adds to the price, but for a meal that’s reasonably priced at 320++, the house red at HKD 600 seems steep. Anyway, we instead opted for glasses of house white/red (~$90), and a bottle of Moonzen ale which Bob recommended (went well with the duck actually!).
Everyone gets the same starters – a small salad (Smoked salmon Caesar that was just fine) and a soup (a delicious tomato with a hint of cream). You choose your main: Ribeye/Duck breast/Pork Chop/Salmon Filet. You can add on a few things like a giant piece of foie-gras or a grilled scallop but that’s otherwise it.
The appetizers I’ve mentioned were good, though they feel like just window dressing for the mains:
The Duck (from France)
I haven’t had western-style duck in a very long time, but this was the biggest single piece I’ve ever seen on a plate. It was delicious though just a bit chewy – not the chefs fault as it was perfectly cooked. I would recommend it for duck-lovers, if it wasn’t for the incredible steak:
The Ribeye (from the US)
Le Moment puts a cow on their business card, so you see what their focus is: it’s probably still not given enough emphasis – this is one delicious steak. Incredibly juicy, it’s burned just enough to maximise its Maillard, and inside it’s cooked to perfection. I only had a bite, but it was leagues above the duck and frankly, most steaks at this price. My friend added the foie grass (+$98) which overdoes the decadence IMO, but she said it was delicious too.
As for the host, Bob, – I really enjoyed the interaction – he was extremely welcoming and spent a long time finding and bringing out potential wines for us to look at. I felt bad we didn’t buy a bottle, but he didn’t betray any sign of irritation, and professionally provided us our wines by the glass. He’s a personality, and I can imagine some people might find the experience a bit draining. I think he adds something unique to the meal though, and certainly keeps things lively.
Le moment is high-concept and good at it – even more so if you’re going just for their delicious steak (which you might consider). For a small restaurant, their limited menu really works and Le Moment as a result, is more than just an alternative to La Vache, its ridiculously-popular neighbor. While the wine pricing is a bit out of whack with the rest of the meal, if you like steak you won’t regret a meal here, if not just to meet one of HK’s most interesting restaurant hosts.
