Run by IHM (proprietors of Linguini Fini and Posto Pubblico), Stone Nullah Tavern is the new baby of partner and Executive Chef, Vinny Lauria. Located opposite the Grade 1 Historical Building, Blue House, on Stone Nullah Lane in Wanchai, Stone Nullah Tavern is a hip and upbeat space, with wooden panelling and framed old maps completing its vintage set-up. Stone Nullah Tavern serves “New American fare”, which means American classic dishes re-imagined and re-created using the freshest local ingredients available.

The restaurant has an airy bar area which serves a selection of boutique whiskies, rums and bourbons, as well as American craft beers. The dishes on Stone Nullah Tavern's food menu have rather unintelligible names, but the hard-working and friendly staff were very happy to brief us on the dishes and give personal recommendations.

(1) We started off with the Foie Burger with caramelized onion marmalade ($170). A soft, sweet and fluffy Hong Kong-style bun was a fantastic partner for the foie gras and the juicy beef patty.

(2) Next, we tried the Crispy Pig's Ear with chili citronette ($50). The shredded pigs' ear was extra crispy, and was even more moreish when dipped in the sweet and spicy chili citronette.

(3) Lazyman's Elote with corn off the cob, chili, sharp cheddar cilantro, butter aioli ($110) was addictive - the crunch of the corn and the creaminess of the butter aioli formed a beautiful textural contrast, while the chili and cheddar cilantro gave it a fiery spicy and sour taste.

(4) The Tater Tots with lardo aioli and sriracha ketchup ($80), i.e. hash browns, paired well with our alcohol, but on their own, they were a tad too salty and overly crunchy.

(5) I have eaten lots of brilliant Mac 'n' Cheeses lately, and this Mac & Cheese with egg yolk and sharp cheddar ($100) was definitely one of unmissable ones! The incredibly creamy, cheesy sauce was made even more indulgent by the addition of a glossy egg yolk. The flavouring was strong and the taste of cheddar lingered nicely in the mouth.

(6) The Grilled Shrimp with bottarga, confit, tomato, aioli negro ($145) was elegantly presented and the sweet, tangy aioli negro gave it an extra edge. However, the shrimps were a bit small and I wished their texture was more firm.

(7) The Chicken Wings with chili, honey, garlic, ranch ($100) were very satisfying, and the interplay between the sweetness and the spiciness worked magnificently.

(8) The Corned Beef Tongue with fermented cabbage, whole grain mustard, rye ($145) had a lovely, refined taste and a commendable texture.

(9) The "Meat & Potatoes" with tenderloin ragu, spaghetti potatoes ($130), a fun and creative dish, was cooked with marvellously tender beef and a flavour-packed sauce. The crispy spaghetti potatoes gave a gorgeous crunch.

(10) The BBQ'd Bacon with zucchini, charred onion, green chili, garlic, dill & sour cream ($160) was wonderfully grilled, with the very fatty but scrumptious glazed pork melting instantly in the mouth. The layering of the sweetness and the saltiness gave the meat more depth.

(11) Stone Nullah Tavern's desserts all sounded absolutely alluring, and we really struggled in deciding which ones to order. The Fat Kid Cake ($75), presented like a piece of birthday cake, consisted of four layers of all-time favourites - red velvet cake, cheesecake, crème brûlée and dark chocolate mousse. Digging into this adorable dessert did make us feel like fat kids fighting over a piece of cake! After the initial excitement was over, however, we found the cake to be a bit unwieldy, with too little crunch to help break up the velvety textures.

(12) Last but not least, the Ovaltine Ice Cream with brûléed banana, chocolate cremoso, peanut butter fudge, cereal crunch ($65) was beyond reproach. Each element - Ovaltine ice cream, the brûléed banana, the peanut butter fudge - was delightful on its own, and when eaten together, tasted utterly sublime.

The innovative and thoughtful "new American fare" at Stone Nullah Tavern seemed very promising. Some of the dishes were a bit small, but after trying a dozen dishes on the menu, the total damage was only around $400 per head including alcohol. The fact that 10% service charge was not automatically added to the bill meant that the waiters worked hard to earn their tips. Even though the dishes were in general a bit too salty, if you are not afraid of bold flavours, this restaurant can serve up a range of gastronomic delights to tantalise your taste buds!

Our family of 4 walked in 7:30 Saturday night without a reservation. It was fine as long as we leave before 9:00 pm.I’m not sure what to make of the description New American food. I guess they just needed to classify their cuisine which is a mix of old and fusion. Our initial order of 9 dishes was good overall. We were surprised to see Sisig, a Filipino dish of chopped up pork, was on the menu. Not the best but good enough. Kids liked the mac and cheese. Liver pate with chips was a good starter.

Burger with foie gras was good but it was only two small buns. Chicken wings were up to par but the potato fritters (hash browns) lacked seasoning. The dishes are small so we ordered more. That was a mistake. We tried the turkey stuffing made of quinoa and it was tasteless and had a weird texture. We also tried the “deep fried chicken” tenderloin which is actually beef. A bit bland too.

anyway, looks like a nice place to hang out

Went here for a birthday, and I loved the atmosphere and location. It was nice to get out of central, and the restaurant was actually pretty spacious with a bar that opens up onto the sidewalk. When the weather is nice this would be a great place for after work drinks if you are around that area.

I had a 'Dark and Stormy' which is one of my favourite cocktail mixes, and I've yet to find somewhere in HK that does it SUPER DUPER WELL. Boujis' one is actually pretty nice. Unfortunately, the Dark and Stormy at Stone Nullah was a little on the weak side, I would have preferred a stronger kick to it. We all had a range of drinks, from Margarita, to some Red drink which i've forgotten the name of, but everyone seemed to like that. Diablo? Might be called that. I ended up going for wine afterwards, and just had a house white, and I was fine with that.

We ordered quite a bit of food, especially with three hungry guys, we had to order two plates of everything. The wings, chips, pigs head terrine, mac and cheese, burgers, smoked squid salad and then two desserts.

The food was all good, even the pigs head terrine which kindof freaked me out a bit. The guys absolutely loved the chips ?! As you do. The burgers were delicious but by the time they came out I was pretty full so only ate half. The desserts were amazing, we probably should have ordered another one of the ovaltine desserts, because that went in one second, and the fat kid cake was everything a fat kid (and a skinny one) would want.

The only thing i can say was that the food took a bit long to come out, so instead of having food to eat with something else eg mac and cheese, we basically had to eat the mac and cheese on its own, because everything came out one by one. So that was a bit of a bummer.

Will probably go back at some point to try out what we missed out!

Sounds promising! In response to that, we ordered some veggies to test if they can deliver that vision =)

First up was the heirloom tomato, the tomatoes were so fresh, juicy and plump and the mint and vinegar made it all the more refreshing. The choi sum with lilies and lemon, on the other hand, was pretty bad, not only was it overly salty, the choi sum was dry and "old". The brussells sprout was done well with nutty and slightly charred smoky flavor.

The mac and cheese was ok, conchiglia, aka the shell pasta, was used instead of macaroni and it was cooked al dente giving it a really good bouncy texture. The flavor though was not as well done, the cheddar cheese added was not properly mixed so some bites were overly salty while some bites were totally bland. The rich, sticky gooey texture I was looking forward to was sadly lacking =(

While the thanksgiving stuffing with quinoa, sausage and foie gras gravy sounded every bit tempting and we couldn’t wait to dig in once the skillet arrived on our table. I wish I could say that angels were singing in the background, but this dish fell flat, it just tasted pretty much like the normal stuffing we are used to.

The grilled prawns with bottarga and black aioli were unmemorable, overly salty and the prawns were not firm like the fresh ones. We had leftovers even though it was a small dish =(

The clams were fresh and succulent, the white wine, chili sauce brought just the right dose of seasoning; we were munching on the crispy sea horse, honey comb looking crunch and when the waiter told us it's fried cow's stomach (tripe), we immediately dropped whatever was left in our hands. We thought that even though service was friendly, staffs were not very attentive; while we ordered, we made it cleared that there are people who can’t eat beef but they forgot to point out to us that there’s fried cow stomach until we casually asked what it was as we were happily munching on them. The brisket, which was highly recommended, was tender and flavorful

Ovaltine ice- cream was pretty amazing, it was a platter full of different textures and flavors, the peanut butter fudge which was smooth, rich and very peanut buttery had stolen the limelight from the ovaltine ice cream which was definitely lacking in flavor, the caramelized sliced banana added a nice “brulee” texture. The dish was gone in literally 5 seconds. While we loved every bit of the peanut butter fudge, we wished the ice cream had a more prominent ovaltine flavor.

The fat kids cake was served with a lit candle, we had a quick look around the table to make sure we din miss anyone’s birthdays by accident but realized it’s just how it’s served. It was basically a stacked cake topped with creme brulee, followed by dark chocolate mousse, NY cheesecake and red velvet cake. The pop rocks sprinkled on top gave an extra spark to the creme brulee glaze. The red velvet and the cheesecake went really well and the dark chocolate mousse was surprisingly cooperative.

I love Posto Pubblico, so obviously I was excited when the same team opened the Stone Nullah Tavern in my neighbourhood. I really wanted to like the food too, but alas, it's a big let down. The "small plates to share" concept is ok, but the menu is seriously confused, trying to mix "American Classics" with head to tail cuisine. We tried the Brie Aranciata, which were ok but not great, and the brisket with cabbage, which was a kind of deconstructed reuben sandwich without the cheese. Again, it was ok, but not great. The best meal of the night was quinoa stuffing with foie gravy. The waitress shouted us a free bowl of pickles (after unsuccessfully trying to sell it to us when she took the orders), but they were really ordinary. For dessert we shared the mango semifreddo with chili, which was yet another let down as there was zero heat to be detected, so it was just an ordinary mango ice cream on a fancy plate with - as two waiters pointed out to us - edible flowers on the side. We weren't full after our meal, but frankly there wasn't anything on the menu that tempted us.
Staff were very friendly and genuine, but unfortunately a bit clueless and obviously hadn't tasted all the dishes.
So for my money (and yes, for what you get it's expensive) I will stick to the front bar, at least until they revise the menu (which I read they plan to, so pls bring it on...).

It pains me to say I came to Stone Nullah Tavern with high expectations, as I know that this “New American” bar & restaurant is also owned by the same people who own “Posto Pubblico”, “Linguini Fini” and “Pizzeria Pubblico” only to be met with extreme extreme disappointment.

I entered the establishment gleaming with joy as I noticed that the dim-lit bar bore a striking resemblance to bars I had long ventured in Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood - wooden panels, low-lit ambiance, slightly rustic, no frill feel filled with microbrew beers – a kind of neighborhood bar you hoped to kick back with your friends and have a few drinks. I also really liked the idea of a corner bar, especially in the Hong Kong summer heat, with its open full length windows, though, this bar situates in an area where not much is happening unless you count 711 and subway and “Tai Lung Fung” just around the corner of the Blue Heritage House.

I previously passed by the bar walking my dog and promptly made a reservation for the first night of Easter vacation for my friends.

I arrived early and sat down with my friend and ordered a cocktail I longed to try, as I am sure the testament of a bar is their cocktails and beers. Though the name escapes me now, I remember that the cocktail was nothing to write home about as it was a bit watered down with not much taste. As we heard this place boasts its “New American fare”, we were eager to try a few things on the menu. One of the servers was extremely nice telling us about the specials, ingredients, a few dishes. Too bad I could not say the same for the dish– tater tots and mac & cheese. Boy was I disappointed. Fair enough, he had already warned us that this is a small portion meant for sharing. That sounded like an oxymoron – small portion meant for sharing? I thought dishes like these would have a bit of a twist on it. I am not kidding you on the minuscule size of an $80 HKD dish/$10.39 USD. We received about 8 pint, wait, thumb sized tater tots that is kind of reminiscent of tater tots you would eat in elementary school cafeteria served with ketchup. OMG. I guess the “costly” part in this dish is not the tater tots itself but the “special ingredients” served on the side, which I have to say is more than the tater tots itself, mayonnaise and some Asian spicy sauce. Hooray, I was jumping in the air with glee. I was jubilant. I was beside myself. How is this “New American”? If I wanted this kind of food, I would just ask a couple of my friends’ kids to make me a few dishes with their own interpretation.

Second dish for redemption - mac & cheese. It was horrid. My friend ate more of it than me and he said it was basically pasta shells with not enough cheese. The kicker? Nothing. Again, small portion.

My other friends arrived thirsty from their hike. As beer aficionados, they were excited to try their microbrew beers - the Rogue beer. Mind you, I went to Hop & Leaf beer and wine tasting at the 7th Estate Winery and some of the beers they served besides Rogue were very nice. Just very unfortunate that the one that tasted most like piss ended up here at this bar. My other friend and I ordered the Dead Man Ale. Though it tasted ok in the beginning, it began to taste like soy sauce. It was also not pleasant that the beers came in half pints for $80 HKD/$10.39 USD. And I am not sure what one of the bartenders were sniffing, but they double charged us on all our orders at the end.

Racking up more than couple of hundred dollars for what seems to be like school cafeteria food attempting to be edgy, modern, we knew it was our cue to leave. As a neighborhood corner bar, I can do with hardy American food and nice few beers, but not a neighborhood bar pretending to be more than it is. I thought this bar & restaurant would really have a lot of potential and given its location, I was more than happy to come here just like my regulars, “Tai Lung Fung” or “Ted’s Lookout”. But sadly, even the food and drinks were not even savory enough to draw me here to this prime location again.

This kind of restaurant really belongs in touristy areas like Soho, Wellington or Wydham, only to meet their fate of being closed down within a month or two of opening. Or maybe not.
Sorely disappointed I so was.
