After a pretty unsatisfying dinner, my friend and I came to Messina in hopes of ending our night on a high end. We came around 8:30 and there was already a queue but at least it moved quite fast.


This gelato store has been around for a long time but is still very popular and this is actually my first time trying them! So I had very high expectations due to the steep prices.


We sampled almost all the flavours and each sample they give is so generous! At least one tablespoon each time! I love their service and you can be satisfied with the samples alone🤣. We ended up on 3 scoops for each of us because it was just all too good and the scoops they give are even bigger than expected so definitely worth the high price they charge which is $95 for 3, $85 for 2 and $70 for 1


We enjoyed our gelato in their very well-air-conditioned (gelato did not melt too quickly) and spacious store with a hand washing machine too.

Hazelnut


my favourite flavour of the night! So incredibly flavourful and rich and decadent with a very strong hazelnut flavour due to them being roasted. The texture is bouncy and smooth, like the gelato from Italy!


Fior Di latte Limone


My second flavour is this seasonal flavour featuring the “flower of milk” that is normally used to describe mozzarella cheese but also applies to pure gelato that is untainted by eggs or vanilla. The result is this silky smooth yet creamy gelato with flavour so rich it resembles Hokkaido milk. Their version is highly flavoured with lemon for freshness although you can’t really taste it as it is very subtle. They also add candied lemon and you can taste this additional sweetness.


Macadamia Crunch


This is also a very very good choice for anyone that likes nut-flavours gelato and a melange of textures in your mouth. The gelato itself is bouncy with a strong macadamia taste, and the use of caramelised white chocolate makes it extra luscious and toffee-like, this maltose sweetness differs from the sucrose one. I absolutely love the crunchy macadamia crunch which reminds of me honeycomb and biscuits, absolute perfection with the smooth, silky gelato.


Panna Cotta with Fig Jam and Amaretti


I got this scoop with the Macadamia Crunch and i highly recommend getting these two together as they make each other better ten-fold. The panda cotta gelato just tastes like a creamy, milky gelato and the fig jam has been well mixed into it, adding a layer of sweetness but not overpowering the panna cotta. The amaretti biscuits aka almond biscuits with amaretto are crunchy and encapsulate the gelato so well.


Black Sesame Tong Yuen


One of the HK-limited flavours that I really wanted to try. Also wanted to try their Mango Saga but it was sold out.


The staff actually gave us two scoops of this instead of one since the first scoop came from a nearly empty bucket 🤭. This gelato is made using roasted black sesame so the flavour is even stronger than you would imagine. I like that it is not too sweet and even slightly bitter like the real thing. It truly does taste like a black sesame tong yuen but the mocha pieces are a tad too big for me and rather tasteless.


Strawberry sorbet


A very refreshing and bouncy gelato with the subtle taste of strawberries, wished there was more but they use fresh, real strawberries so can’t complain. This went well with the creamy, milk-based ones.


Below are some of the flavours I sampled and was memorable enough to make it here:


Egg Tart


It’s crazy how they managed to take the essence of an egg tart and remake it as a gelato because it tastes very much like an egg tart. The puff pastry too was delicious but soggy since it has been frozen.


Tofu Fa


This was so good! Tasted exactly like Pak Fook’s Tofu Fa! Sweet and silky and creamy with a thick soy taste! The only problem was the red sugar which is exactly like the real thing and thus very sweet for me.


Chocolate Mint


I tried this flavour which uses real mint but I’ve got to say that I prefer the artificial ones as they taste more like mint to me 😅


Pistachio Praline


Their Pistachio was sold out so I tried their pistachio praline but it was not the same. This is just Fior di latte gelato with pistachio nuts, praline, and white chocolate. The resulting pistachio taste is very mild and can barely taste it.


Coconut and Lychee


They use coconut milk for this gelato thus it is very creamy and thick and tastes like coconut cream. The lychee adds freshness and sweetness but the flavours clash together in my opinion.


Pandan and Coconut Sorbet


Weirdly salty but you can definitely taste the pandan and coconut. not a bad choice I hope to try again next time.

💬 Overall, normally, I would never pay or encourage you to pay this much money for ice cream, but Messina is truly great. The money you are paying for it not only for the ice cream you are getting but the limitless amount of gelato you sampled (make your money’s worth, encore samples!) and the quality of the ingredients which are guaranteed to be top-notch. Highly recommend getting 3 scoops between two people or just 3 scoops by yourself as it is the most worth it one and most camera ready. Unfortunately, I was unable to get a nice photo of my 6 scoops of ice cream so will have to come back 😜
