"Cinco de Mayo" means "5th of May" in Spanish, which is the date when the Mexican army claimed an unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla during the French occupation of Mexico. Today, some Americans and Mexicans still celebrate this day as a symbol of pride for Mexico's success in the battle.Agave is a restaurant and bar in Wanchai that offers a range of regional dishes from Guadalajara, Mexico's second most populated city, as well as Jalisco. Agave is a restaurant and bar in Wanchai that offers a range of regional dishes from Guadalajara, Mexico's second most populated city, as well as Jalisco. The ambience of Agave is down-to-earth and laid-back, and the restaurant is decorated in vivid orange and red colours which mirror the unique architectural style of Luis Barragan, one of the most influential Mexican architects of the 20th Century.
On 5 May 2013, Agave will be serving a Mexican buffet from 7pm-9.30pm, only at $198 per person. This would be a really fun way to celebrate "Cinco de May" in Hong Kong, even if you have never been to Mexico before!
(1) A giant platter of Nachos was brought to our table, and the guacamole and cheese in the dish were simply addictive! (2) Next to arrive was the Grilled Chicken. The chicken was tangy and delicious, and I also liked how it was not dry even after grilling. (3) The Marinated Pork had a firm texture and a nice meaty taste. (4) If you would like something lighter, you should go for the Breaded Sole Fish, which also tasted excellent. I wished the fish was a tad crispier on the surface though! (5) A selection of traditional condiments and side dishes, such as corn tortillas, Mexican rice, guacamole and tomato salsa will be served at the buffet. Let your creativity flow and assemble your own tacos platter, just like how my friend K has assembled his in the photo below! (Mine looked terrible so I'd rather not upload a photo of it...) (6) I enjoyed eating the Spicy Pork Quesadillas, which were full of flavours and satisfying. (7) We were all very full by the time the bubbling Prawn Molcajete was served, but I still tried a bit of it and it was tasty with a spicy kick. (8) If you like margaritas, you should order one at Agave. The traditional margarita was strong, so don't expect a watered down cocktail that you sometimes get at other places. My favourite, however, was definitely the Frozen Margarita. Some friends preferred the strawberry flavour, but for me, mango worked best as it tasted incredibly fruity and refreshing. (9) After our huge meal, we were presented with two desserts: pancakes with caramel and flan with fresh berries. These gave us a much-needed sugar boost just when we were almost dozing off! If you are into beer, there will be a 2 for 1 offer for Corona beer, only at $55 per bottle.
Get ready to party the Mexican way this Sunday!
