Good reviews on OpenRice prompted me to try this Shanghainese restaurant on a rainy Monday night. We arrived at 6.15pm and were the first customers of the evening. The decor is what you would expect from a good Chinese restaurant - subdued lighting, Olde World stylish and tables big enough for a banquet! The overall atmosphere is cosy and the staff were attentive and always at hand.We ordered the $288 set menu for 2 and were pleasantly surprised to find the food top notch. The Braised Fish and S
We ordered the $288 set menu for 2 and were pleasantly surprised to find the food top notch. The Braised Fish and Sliced Pork with Garlic and Chili Sauce cold appetizers were tasty and left us craving for more . The Thickened Fish Soup was not bad and wonderfully steaming when it arrived. I just hate it when the soup is cold or tepid.
The waiter was kind enough to allow us to order the Sichuan Pork instead of a beef dish (which my wife doesn't eat) included in the set dinner. The dish was nicely done and much better than the fare you normally find in a Shanghainese eatery. However, the Kung Pao Chicken was just ok.
Our meal finished with the Banana Red Bean Deep Fried Ball, which we devoured even though we were extremely full. All in all, a good, quiet place for those seeking a little luxury away from the hustle and bustle of city life.
