Feeling a bit lazy to cook and really wanted a take away break, I decided to try out Black Garlic on the way home from work. Located in One Pacific Place (which is near Star Street), this little area mainly houses take away style restaurants geared for the office workers nearby. The takeaway only restaurant has one big counter where they have a kitchen in the back where everything is prepped and ready for take away. The takeaway only restaurant has one big counter where they have a kitchen in the back where everything is prepped and ready for take away. If you come during the busier lunch hour, all the ingredients are laid out so there is no delay in packing everything.
On one wall is a drinks fridge.
Menu is in English and Chinese. As it's take away only, there is no 10% service charge. They offer sets that cost $80 and includes a drink (either soy or milk tea found in the fridge) or the soup of the day.
They also serve other drinks such as coffee.
They also cookies from Butter Brown.
The menu said they also offer sets which include a drink and coffee.
But I wasn't here for cookies and just wanted dinner take away. I ordered two sets. It came neatly packed in sturdy containers.
The sets include a soup of the day or drink. It was was too hot for soup so boyfriend and I chose a drink. I had the soymilk. There is an option for sweet or not sweet. I had the sweet and it was pretty good. Strong soy taste and not overly sweet.
Boyfriend had the Bauhinia Milk Tea. Not overly sweet and very smooth tasting.
The bowls multigrain rice, a daily poached vegetable, main, pickled tomato and two big curry fish balls along with a main. The mains change daily. I had the sweet and sour pork neck. I liked they didn't add the usual red color so it felt more natural. The balance of sweet and sour was really good. The pork neck was tender. The vegetables that day was spinach and it was actually seasoned. The curry fish balls were large, firm and very spicy. The tomato was super sour, balancing everything out. The rice was not over cooked and portion size was just right.
Boyfriend added $10 and had the black garlic consomme beef rib which was well worth it. The beef was tender and moist with a rich deep flavor. There was some sweet carrots and onions. Rice is adjustable so he asked for a bit more.
Beautifully plated for takeaway and it didn't seem slapped together. Packaging was sturdy and held together well on the way home without any spillage. The food was delicious and with no MSG it was still packed with flavor. Good portion size and I'd definitely do this place for take away again.
