Went to Magushi for dinner last night finally with my other half. We have been fans of nearby Nambantei for quite some time but I had grown a bit tired of their menu selection (which hasn't change for at least 3 years now).

I was delighted to find that Magushi had a much larger selection of skewers and cooked foods. However, as I was going through my kimchi fishcake appetizer, I looked down and came across a LIVE FLY that had its legs stuck on a piece of fishcake. I got a server to come over and look at it and in typical HK fashion, he mumbled an apology, took it away, brought me a new plate, and that was the end of that...

Fine, this is not a 5-star operation but still... I would've expected an apology from a manager, a couple of free skewers... anything to make this a little bit better to the customer. Their reaction to my complaint was simply a sign of how clueless they are about the concept of "customer service" and finding a buzzing fly in my food does not instill much confidence in the overall hygiene of their kitchen.

Also found a stray hair on a plate of skewers after that but in comparison, it didn't bother me nearly as much. Interestingly, someone came over when we asked for the check to inquire if everything was all right - I pointed out the fly issue but was promptly ignored. He was actually more interested in finding out why we had not finished a piece of beef...

Overall, food quality was similar in quality to Nambantei - some items were slight better, some not so. We had two different types of beef - one was relatively tender and the other extra tough - so quality is uneven (although not unexpected). The skewers have a distinctively HK twist to them (selection wise). Not as salty as Nambantei, which is a good thing health wise - but this took away the flavour from a number of skewers including their chicken skin one. Didn't do a side by side comparison on price vs. Nambantei, but I suspect that it's priced similarly as well given their proximity.

Decor was nice given that its new - but its more yuppie-ish than a dark smokey yakitori joint which we would've preferred.

Definitely not a repeat for us.
