Wow, its good to be back in Hong Kong! Will be here for another two weeks, and am looking forward to sampling some new restaurants!

First new restaurant I tried this time around was King Ludwig. Its been opened since summer (when I left), and I've heard very mixed reviews about this place from different friends.

I booked a table for 10 people, and I can say that we all had a merry good time. Happy Hour lasts until 8:00pm, so we got a few orders of drinks in before it ended. Litre-sized German beer (Erdinger Dunkel Weissbier) loosened up the mood in a hurry. My friend also tried the King Ludwig Draft, which was much too sweet for my liking (but our female friends enjoyed it).

We ordered an oddball of food, with some people sharing and others preferring their own portion. Sharing with a friend, I ordered the "famous" Potato Cakes with Mushroom and Herbs (薯餅配白菌香草), the Sausage Sampler (德國腸拼盤) and the Crisp Roast Pork Knuckle (脆皮燒豬肘) with a side of Potato Salad (德國薯仔沙律).

The Potato Cakes were very disappointing. It was the same as eating deep-friend shredded potatoes, and the mushroom and asparagus sauce that accompanied it was overly salty and creamy. In all seriousness, I would recommend a McDonald's hash brown over this.

The Sausage Sampler offered more redemption. Although by the time the course came, I was in no state to try and guess what time of sausages were being offered (I was already on my second litre of beer), I remembered that in general it was solid. The sausages were not overcooked, and were all fairly tasty - but then again, its difficult to do wrong with good sausage.

The Pork Knuckle was the piece de resistance. The salty cured meat accompanied with tendon and fat, and topped with the incredibly crispy (and mouthwatering) skin is the perfect partner for your never-ending liter of beer. Recommended to be shared, and it would be wise to follow, as this dish will do hell to your cholesterol. I have to say that I've food the ultimate beer food.

On a less optimistic note, the side of Potato Salad that accompanied it was pretty bad. I'm usually a huge fan of potato salad, but found myself being unable to finish this dish. It was very sour, with way too much liquid. It seemed more like a potato stew than a salad.

The restaurant in Happy Valley also has a bar attached, my friends and I stayed until late (2-3am) and turned a dinner into a memorable night of revelry. So while the food (to be perfectly honest), can only be considered average, whoever is looking for a night of excess and fun will find a good place in this King Ludwig joint
