It's such a muddle of emotions, that longing for familiar fare from our home countries; we miss it so much, we're so afraid it's going to suck, so hopeful that it won't. I knew going in that Yuen Long wasn't precisely the epicenter of fabulous Western cuisine. I knew that. And yet I'd passed by the Homey Café so many times, wondering. Finally, I was able to convince the husband to check it out with me. Our prediction, going in, was that the food was likely to be passable but that serving sizes would be too small. Were we right? Read on and find out.

We walked in, gestured to the server and were invited to sit at the nice table-for-two next to the window. Looking around, I found the interior comfortable if small. Clean signage advertising Hoegaarden on tap, counters tastefully decorated with giant tins of canned tomatoes, nothing out of the ordinary there at all. We placed an order for a burger with fries, chicken wrap, chili cheese fries--all to share--and an iced coffee for yours truly.

The burger was a confusing mix of pros and cons. That the bun was a luxurious dark wheat was quite surprising. Condiments included lettuce, a small tomato slice, and ketchup--no mustard, no mayo, no real options there. I'd have liked to have seen a slice of onion on the cutting board as well, to be honest. The biggest disappointment, however, was the burger itself; it tasted just like a TV dinner patty that had come straight from the freezer. That's a rookie mistake that no authentic American burger joint could afford to make.

Okay, but not all was lost. The fries were hot and fresh, and the iced coffee I washed it all down with was prepared with a decadent heavy cream.

The chicken wrap--actually, the real reason I'd gone into Homey Café--also took me on a weird journey. The grilled meat, cucumber, and sweet teriyaki-esque sauce were warm and, frankly, delicious. As evidenced by the photo, the presentation was thoughtful, with wrap and salad carefully arranged on a long plate. Unfortunately, the sandwich in its entirety was just too small--and with untucked ends, its contents wound up dropped in my lap more than once.

Bellies still rumbling, we silently thanked the Kitchen God we'd ordered a side to share. The chili cheese fries was easily the best dish on the table and kept us from going home crying.

The Good: Crème fraîche in lieu of the standard sour cream, dried parsley added flavor.

The Bad: Meat was sparse and in hiding, using undoctored canned tomatoes is just lazy.

And so the verdict? Yup, we pretty much nailed it--passable, but too little food for the price. And avoid that burger like it's got herpes.
