As a fan of spicy food and missing the taste of Hunanese cuisine, I heard about this place and decided to try it out with one friend. Service 3/5: We were seated professionally and ordered our food. Service remained professional and rather standard throughout the evening. Nothing special but satisfactory. I was told by friends the service was very slow, but it wasn't for us. This may suggest inconsistency but for us it was fine.
Decor 4/5: The entrance was a bit narrow, but the place looked quite nice on the inside and created what I would call a nice but relaxed restaurant suitable for small groups and casual conversation. Again it wasn't amazing, but for the price range it's also what you'd expect of a generally decent and slightly relaxed restaurant. Ambience well suited for small groups of friends, maybe less so for dates or business.
Taste 5/5: I think this was the best part (arguably the most important of any restaurant), and it is very suitable for HK. The best thing was that they achieved the perfect balance of toning down the spiciness to HK levels, but still keeping the authentic Hunanese flavour and not toning it down too far. This alone as well as the satisfactory portion of dishes made the food "just right" in every way, as far as our expectations were concerned.
We ordered 3 dishes: chicken with cartilage, pork mixed with peppers, and a cold vegetable starter. The cold vegetable starter was refreshing and light, but had a nice flavour. The chicken cartilage and pork were both delicious and were both salty and spicy in a way that was well balanced. Portions were quite satisfactory and we were full by the end of the meal.

Value for Money 3/5: While the food was delicious, for 3 dishes along with 2 bowls of rice we paid around 300. This is neither good nor bad; it's just we didn't feel like we got a special deal. The taste was great; but the dishes were still somewhat simple. We got what we paid for, no more no less.
Overall I would put it like this: Cafe Hunan is a solid option for those who like spicy food in HK.
