I miss banh mi. It was one of the most favorite things I had while living in Canada. My high school best friend was Vietnamese and she always brought these to school for lunch and we'd share each others sandwiches. Oddly, I can find good banh mi everywhere except Hong Kong. So, when I saw this place was new and reviews were favorable, I dragged boyfriend here to check it out as I was in Kowloon City for Ching Ming.Banh mi, for those that do not know, is a Veitnamese sandwich. Banh mi, for those that do not know, is a Veitnamese sandwich. Their is a mix of Vietnamese sausage, minced pork, cliantro, pickled carrots and daikon and cucumber all in a small bun that is shaped like a baguette but is more airy with a thinner crust than the typical French baguette.
Banh Mi Bakery serves not only banh mi but other Vietnamese dishes like lemongrass pork chops with rice. But they don't serve pho. Menu is in Chinese and English. Place is tidy and clean. Service was well ... not attentative. We had to ask for a menu before given one. Then was ignored while we waved our hands for attention to order. There is 10% service charge. They also serve a small variety to Vietnamese beer.
Vietnamese Drip Coffee with Ice ($30). As I didn't want to order a $60 coffee for Trung Nguyen Legendee Gold brand coffee, I ordered regular Vietnamese drip. I think I assumed they would still give me a decent strong coffee but instead I got some weak coffee that tasted strangely of local Nestea brand. There also a very small amount of condensed milk. Not the larger amount I usually get at Vietnamese places. Not a good cup of coffee. Original Banh Mi ($68). The original banh mi included Vietnamese sausage, minced BBQ pork, Vietnamese pig's ear sausage, pork roll, pickled daikon and carrot. I requested this to have no hot sauce. What can I say? The bun was way too hard and crispy. It wasn't light and airy. The filling was too little but there was a huge amount of pickled daikon and carrot. However, the daikon and carrot wasn't not tart enough. There wasn't enough cucumber to give it freshness. And I only found one small sliver of a cilantro. Lemongrass Beef Banh Mi ($78). This wasn't much better. We requested some spice on this one. We expected the addition of chilis but instead we got some weird spicy mayo added that wasn't extremely spicy. The beef didn't have much lemongrass flavor. All sandwiches came with a little daikon and carrot salad that was actually very spicy and more tart than what was added to the sandwiches themselves.
A bit pricy for this area. Not good sandwiches at all. Ok for those that never had a banh mi before. Not recommended for those that have had one before because these are a not even close to being good. Won't return.
