Meeting up with boyfriend and his mother for dim sum, we decided to go somewhere near his home. 八月小品 is located near the Wong Tai Sin MTR station. The restaurant was fairly busy but we were still able to get a table.Menu was in Chinese only. They seemed to have a reasonable set which included a mini steamed rice or congee and three dim sum dishes. There was a assorted plate of steamed cake. This included turnip, water chestnut and taro. The plate was hot but the food was just barely warm. A sign that this dish was heated in the microwave. The cakes tasted like starchy cardboard.
Deep fried fish cakes was something boyfriend wanted for his fried food quota. Personally, I thought they were disgusting. Even he agreed and he wanted this! The fish cakes was soggy and literally soaked up all the oil. The coating wasn't even crispy. Just chewy like it had been sitting for some time.
Sesame balls with taro paste was actually ok. Oddly, the best of all the items we ordered.
The congee was fish maw and corn. Can this get any more bland? It seemed they didn't bother to season it. Of course, they did dump half a bottle of white pepper into it so it then tasted like pepper.
Dace fish balls were ok. Not too many small bones that are sometimes found in dace meat. But what is with the pepper? When the staff asked we wanted white pepper added, she dumped almost the entire bottle!
The steamed beef balls tasted too fluffy. I think they added more flour than actual meat.
Custard filled buns were pretty good. Runny and sweet filling. Soft and fluffy bun.
Steamed rice with chicken feet and spare ribs were pretty good. A nice mini size but still shareable between the three of us. Rice was soft and flavored well with the meat toppings.
Food was ok with some not so good. Everything came out within 20 minutes. I think that was the fastest I've ever had dim sum items come out. I think they were rushing people out that day as they wanted to mop the floors or something? Lights suddenly went out and we sat only by the natural sunlight through the windows. Then the air conditioner was turned off and they turned on fans. At that point, we just gobbled our food quickly and left.
