I can't say I'm not happy seeing 18 Grams growing from a tiny coffee place, to a successful cafe chain with outlets located nearly all around town, in just a few short years.   I think 18 Grams is one of the first joints in HK to offer this Australian style coffee. It has the milkiness of a caffe latte but is more intense in the coffee component and what's more, you don't have to fight for a seat in-store (of course it's great if you can since the tiny shop is nearly always packed) and get your shot down and go in less than 2 minutes.

They do serve food, in the form of all-day brunches and salads. Thanks to my dietary constraints I can just have salads 😨. Anyway this is the 18 Grams House Salad, consisting of mixed salad greens tossed in a honey balsamic dressing and some cherry tomatoes. (There's supposed to be marinated mushrooms but they ran out of stock of them today.)

 Not my favorite kind of salad but suffice to say, it's wholesome and refreshing enough. In the background is a Long Black, aromatic and bold for a quick caffeine boost.

(Thankfully they're finally offering a new menu soon and I'm looking forward to some yummier changes...)

No cafe menu in the sweet-toothed HK is complete without some cakes. I'm not boring you with the usual cheesecakes and chocolate cakes, but my favourite is this Apple Bread, again an Aussie specialty.

 It's got chunks of apple in it and served with whipped cream, and it is a great companion with coffee. I'd love to have it every day for brekkie! (Or maybe not, as I still have banana bread for rotation!)

Either you need a cuppa on the go or some space for a lazy afternoon, 18 Grams is the place for you.

    Came here for a break after walking around for a few hours with my friend~ Environment:It's a tiny little shop with just about 10 seats, but there were only a few people in there when we arrived so we easily got to sit at the small table instead of being crammed at the big table with strangers. For me, the table was a little low or maybe the seat was too high so I couldn't sit comfortably.     Service:
    There really wasn't much  service, besides orders being taken and the bill being brought. It worked for me though. I prefer not being disturbed by staff when I'm trying to catch up with friends or simply just wanting some alone time. 

    Taste:
    After checking out the menu, I decided on the tea set that came with a cup of house coffee and tiramisu and my friend decided on the Iced Cappuccino Vienna. First up was the Tiramisu. The staff was considerate enough to bring us 2 spoons without us having to ask. 
     Um...the cake was delicious. 
    With just the right amount of cocoa powder dusted on top, the cake was light, fluffy and smooth with a hint of coffee liquor i believe? I'm hesitant to eat Tiramisu sometimes because if it's not fresh or poorly made, the taste of raw eggs can be strong and just unpleasant to eat. However, this was not the case for this cake and I couldn't put my spoon down.

     The first thing I do when I order coffee is to take a sip before adding anything. It was pretty light and went down smoothly, but a bit too mellow. The only coffee that I can't really take are ones that are too acidity, so this was okay since it wasn't acidic at all. Then, i added some milk to it, and it tasted better. 
     I think the milk added some more taste and natrual sweetness to the drink.

     The last item that was served was the Iced Cappuccino Vienna. It was served with a litte tin of syrup for you to add to your liking. My friend said it was okay so I had a sip and thought that it was a bit bland. Again, the coffee wasn't very strong and it tasted watered down probably due to the ice. The cream was thick and the drink was cold so my friend struggled to blend it. 

    value for $$?:
    My tea set was $58 and my friend's drink was $43. If I had wanted to change my drink into something other than the house coffee or tea, I would have had to add half of what the drink's worth on top of the $58. It's a rip off in my opinion, so $58 is bascially the price of the cake. 
     Overall, overpriced for such average drinks. 

    Final Verdict:
    This place is a little on the expensive side in my opinion and since the drinks weren't strong enough for my taste, I would probably go to other places before considering coming back. 
    Other Info. : There is a cat that hangs out outside in the alley. I've gone twice and both times it was there so beware if you are not a fan of cats.

    Hong Kong is becoming increasingly coffee savvy in recent years, which means that there are more decent coffee joints for a coffee-addict like me.

    Besides Barista Jam in Sheung Wan which I am a big fan of, 18 grams is another cafe that I go to in the weekends whenever I need my coffee fix. Originally a small establishment in Causeway Bay, 18 grams now also a branch in Tsim Sha Tsui and one in Mongkok. The Causeway Bay outlet is tiny, but thanks to its quick turnover, I never had to wait too long for a table in the afternoon (but I am not sure what it's like in the morning).

    Each branch has its own house blend, and the Causeway Bay branch uses a blend called Black Sheep, which mixes coffee beans from four different regions and has an absolutely alluring aroma. Besides premium coffee, there are also an all day breakfast menu and a selection of delicious house made cakes. The prices at 18 grams are very reasonable, but note that they only accept cash or Octopus card for payment.

    (1) I ordered a Flat White (large, $38), which tasted wonderful and had the perfect temperature and level of frothiness. The beautiful crema was a job well done.

     (2) My friend ordered a Chocolate Vienna (large, $42), a decadent chocolate drink with whipped cream. It was rich and tasty, but she couldn't finish it in the end as we ordered a lot of food.

     (3) There was a decent selection on the all day breakfast menu, and we ordered an All Day Breakfast ($98), with toast, scrambled eggs, baked beans and sausages. The scrambled eggs were attractively smooth and runny, and the sausages were fantastically grilled and full of flavours.

     (4) I enjoyed the Duck Focaccia ($62), as the lightly toasted focaccia were light and fluffy, and the smoked duck breast had an excellent taste. My only complaint was that there was a tad too much sauce in it.

     (5) The cakes were accomplished. The Not quite brownie "brownie" ($25) had a layer of chocolate mousse on top, and a thick chunk of nutty chocolate brownie at the bottom - I loved the different textures in this cake and it was moreish.

     The cafe is small and it could get quite hot if you sit at the tables near the entrance, so I may not come here too often in the summer. Having said that, 18 grams is still one of my favourite coffee shops in Hong Kong and I will be back in autumn!

       This coffee has a really good balance between bitterness and fruit acids. Easy to drink.
      Instead of as milky as latte, flat white have a more even mix of liquid milk and smooth velvet foam, and without sacrificing the crema like cappuccino. It is strong and fill all your sense in coffee, just like an espresso.

      Flat white is not just a small latte.

         這是鴨胸香草包伴沙律
        呢個比較有驚喜，香草包暖暖的，厚身之餘尚算軟熟
        鴨胸味道香脆、不過份量少了一點...以六十多元不包飲品的價錢來說應該可以大方一點
        內餡夾雜了一些小沙律菜，中和鴨胸肥膩感
        伴以一份小量沙律菜及火箭菜，加添清新感覺。

        總結，味道價錢均屬一般，沒有很想再回去的衝動。

        第一次黎食，無叫all day breakfast , 叫左黑魚子炒蛋多士同芝士香草多士併沙律，炒蛋幾香幾滑，多士脆但唔會太硬，沙律菜幾新鮮，另叫左latte 同 熱朱古力，拉花好靚，係隻有心既天鵝,咖啡夠香，奶泡好多，唔會太苦，朋友既朱古力同樣好香好濃,杯面有拉花！ 題外話：因為響街俾手推車撞損左隻腳，諗住問鋪頭拎張膠布，佢地竟然搵人即刻買俾我，真係好感動，雖然食個早餐一百蚊對我黎講貴左少少，不過真係唔錯既經驗，有機會都會想再同朋友黎飲咖啡！

          Similar to Unar Coffee Company, coffee addicts can place their coffee on the bench by the pavement outside the café. Other than coffee, they serve all day breakfast and cakes too. Staff are generally helpful and pleasant.

           As a jam maniac, the keyword “homemade” just caught my eyes. 2 flavours, cinnamon apple and strawberry were served with butter and 6 pieces of white and wheat toasts. Unlike those we got in bottles from supermarkets, these homemade jams were a light and healthier version with less sugar and no preservatives. For the cinnamon apple, it’s not difficult to relate the filling in an apple tart. This one was tasty but too dry to be in jam or spread texture. I would suggest either adding pectin as thickening agent or smashing some apples to make a puree base.

          For the strawberry jam, despite in a pale red than the usual brick red, it gave a refreshing and natural strawberry flavour. However, as the jam was not thick enough, the toast would become damp quickly. Anyway, would be perfect if the serving size of the jams was doubled.

           I was attracted to “Grand Cru” which means premium quality for wine or food. Instead of the famous chocolate maker Valrhona, 18 Grams used another French label Weiss. The chocolate drink was smooth, of the right sweetness and not over-intensive chocolate flavour.
