Saw 85 South's booth at Clockenflap this weekend and immediately planned a visit. Showed up about 8:15pm for dinner with 6 friends of mine. Showed up about 8:15pm for dinner with 6 friends of mine. The dining setup is similar to barbecue joints I've been to in the US. You place your order at the counter first and then find a seat. Seating is limited to 3 picnic tables which seat about 8 each (unless there's someone being selfish by occupying a space with a bag like these guys did today).
Now, disclaimer, although I LOVE barbecue and was fortunate enough to try some of the best barbecue in America (lived in Missouri), I only have a basic grasp of what makes barbecue yummeh in the tummeh.
I ordered the Big Boi Plate and an Arnold Palmer (for a total of about 150$) which I took a bite of before taking a picture... I just couldn't wait.

The Big Boi consists of ribs, pulled pork, two scoops of slaw, and fries. It's not huge, and I wouldn't consider it american sized like me, BUT! It should be enough for the average human. (For reference, I ate two thanksgiving dinners one night last week)

Now onto the dirty details.
85 does a dry rub for their ribs before smoking them. The ribs are excellent. They rub was full of flavor and the meat was still moist after the smoking. The style of these ribs differs from those I've had before in that the ribs I had in Missouri were given a heavy HEAVY rub and saucing before the smoke and the smoke was a large part of the taste. These at 85 were a wonderful new experience for my mouth, placing emphasis more on the meat and the rub than the smokiness, which of course was still there.
The ribs went great with all 3 of their sauces, but my favorite was the...one in the red bottle. Followed closely by the mustard and vinegar sauces. I believe the red was the 'west' tomato based sauce. The red sauce was the clear winner at my table, with the bottle EMPTY by the time we finished our meals. The choice of sauces was also a new experience, and I'd never had sauce quite like the vinegar before; it's not too sharp, and surprisingly goes quite well with the barbecue. I'm more used to thick, heavy, and sweet or peppery sauces.
The pulled pork was also delicious. Once again, I liked it with the red sauce, but it was also great with the mustard sauce.
To drink I had an Arnold Palmer and then a sweet tea. The drinks were solid, and served in a red dixie-style cup.
Onto the slaw. It was truly, a different experience. Slaw in my mind has always been mayonnaise and other stuff. This slaw was different, it was less heavy with the sauce as 'typical' coleslaw, and was a pleasure to eat. It is also darker in color than regular slaw, due to the tomato base of 85's slaw.
After the big boi I had to have more, so I got a pulled pork sandwich. Report on that? Same old, same old. It was solid. The bun was toasted and hot (nice touch. shows they really care about detail) and the pork was topped with a healthy sized scoop of slaw.

The only issue I had with my experience was that food came out slower than I'd have liked and seating took a while due to the crowd. I'd recommend going during off-hours if you don't like waiting. The food is all solid, and I make this next comment only out of personal preference. I think 85 south could try getting softer, sweeter, bread for the sandwiches. It's nice when the bread and pork have almost the same consistency and almost become part of each other. It's just a personal preference though, and maybe it wouldn't go well with their North Carolina style of barbecue. Overall, 85 South is SOLID and I would really recommend it if you were in the mood for some good american barbecue.
Oh, and here's a photo of the menu.

I actually passed by the door front several times at Kau U Fong, but back then I thought it was a shoes store from the logo. Now I look again, it is actually the typical road sign design in US. The woods entrance with an illuminating door sign is very welcoming.

The inferior of 85 South is very artistic with painted walls from different designers at both side of the restaurant. The owner aims to change the artwork display every few months to promote art. 85 South only offers counter service but there are several wooden tables and stools for seating. The ambience is chill and lovely, it is where you chat with friends on the street with a beer on your hand kind of restaurant.

Before we move on to the delicious smokey barbecues, I have to talk about the amazing sauces made in house. The three sauces features three different region's flavours. Starting with my very favourite SOUTH, which is a creamy honey mustard sauce. Seconded by EAST, a peppery vinegar based thin sauce. Last but not least WEST, a robust barbecue sauce with a touch of sweetness. They are all great sauces and I had difficulties in deciding which to pair with my food.

Here comes the seducing tray with smokey aroma. The mix tray consists of pulled pork, slaw and ribs. Looking simple, they were all VERY G.O.O.D. Let me talk more in detail below.

First I am gonna talk about my absolute favourite on the tray, the coleslaw (HKD50 as side). The slaw is very different from any slaw I have ever had in my life. My image of slaw would be the overly creamy and mayo overloading slaw from KFC or any fast food shop. 85 South's slaw totally changed my view! The slaw at 85 South is a traditional North Carolina BBQ slaw which is tomato based, juicy and savoury. Its was soooooooooo good, no wonder people are ordering just a whole tray of slaw to go!

My second fav would be the pulled pork. It was very tender with a smokey note. I love to pair the pulled pork with EAST, the honey mustard sauce with a tad of sweetness.

The ribs was very smokey and they are more lean than the typical ribs we found elsewhere. I like it with the South, the sourness and spiciness seems to bring out the smokiness more from the ribs!

Side - Chips - HKD50
The chips at 85 South was fat and crispy. I reckon it was best to go with the SOUTH sauce.

Mac and cheese
I am not a big mac and cheese fan, so I do not particularly bond with the dish. The roasted cheese crust was crunchy and was mildly cheesy. The macaroni was still chewy but was rather sticky.

Carrot Cupcakes
The carrot cupcake was tweeted to be the best in town, and I totally agree with the verdict! The carrot cupcake was moist and chewy with a lovely carrot aroma! There was also crunchy nuts on the cupcakes adding extra texture to the it The cream cheese on top was light and mildly sweet. I can totally finish half a dozen of them in one go.

Arnold Palmer - HKD20
The Arnold Palmer is a mix of ice tea and lemonade. They do not taste spectacular but ice tea is a beloved drink at the South so this make them feel like home. I do feel impress as they serve the Arnold Palmer on a RED CUP, which is super difficult to find in Hong Kong, not to mention it is crazily expensive.

Even though the food is simple and there are no amazing food plating, these are comfort and delicious food that I enjoy a lot. Thanks 85 South for bringing this amazing taste from North Carolina. I am seriously in love with the slaw and dreamed about it everyday.

P.S. They are having a Thanksgiving turkey special! I am definitely going ♥
P.S.2 You can leave message on the wall of their bathroom!

Carolina and other parts of the US south and still have a passion for well cooked BBQ. The pulled pork at 85 was a 10 out of 10, a score I wouldn't give out easily. They truly focus on the pork first and it shows in the final product. Maybe my favorite aspect of the meal was the BBQ sauce choices. Usually, especially in N Carolina, you'll only be able to order Carolina BBQ with that particular shop's proprietary sauce. Most commonly a vinegar based sauce. 85 does it right and lets you choose between an east coast style vinegar sauce, a south favorite mustard base or the "typical" tomato base that most people know as BBQ sauce. All three are great! I'm guessing they are all homemade as well. Do it up right with fries, slaw and some sweet Carolina tea and you'll swear you're sitting back in a restaurant on the Carolina shore. It's that authentic. FTW, the coleslaw is somewhat of a work of art. Most slaw is just mayo drenched cabbage and shouldn't really appeal to anyone in their right mind. 85 may have just redefined my definition of slaw, it was worth writing about. If you're not from the US and/or never experienced some wicked good 'cue, look no further. Admittedly, you'll pay a bit less for the stuff back in the states but I can imagine what the shop rent must be here in central and you can't blame the guy for trying to make a buck! All considered, you're paying a pretty fair price for a quality product. One more thing, the place was clean as a whistle which, isn't typical of your adverage BBQ joint...big points here for 85. Oh, and just a suggestion, they do hold private events at the restaurant if you need to throw a cool party...that being said, it might be worth calling ahead and making sure they're open to the public before you head out promising your friends an amazing dinner.

It was finely chopped cabbages in sweet vinegar sauce American style with a gorgeous crunch.
There was also a hint of peppery kick and bits of cracked black pepper and red chili which you can visually see.
Ideally for complementing pull pork and ribs but since I was full I had on its own which got a bit sweet.
This sidedish is probably suitable for four people to share.

My wife and I arrived relatively early at 12:00 on a Sunday (German style), so we could immediately get a table since they just opened. The mouthwatering aroma of their food was not annoying as standing in the middle of the kitchen, but just enough to create a big appetite. The decoration is nice with contemporary graffitti on their walls. Don't forget to leave your tag/mark on the restroom walls - pen is provided by the restaurant!

Service was nice and chatty not only to us, but to other patrons joining the restaurant later - yet leaving enough room to enjoy the food. Not sure whether it's normal, but since my wife is on a special low-carb diet, he was flexible enough to swap fries against more cole-slaw. Just a minor favour, but still leaving a positive impression.

Juicy pulled pork and tender ribs!

We started off with their delicious house-made lemonade, which was just right. Many others add too much sugar and others add too much acidity or bitterness. I liked it, because it was really well-balanced in sweetness and tartness. The owner explained to us that they will introduce some spiked drinks later.

Our original plan was to order a portion of pulled pork and then a portion of their ribs, which were only available at 13:00 since they smoke those fresh over hours to get them really tender. That pulled pork was amazingly juicy and tasty! We've been tasting pulled pork around the world, including "Fette Sau" in Brooklyn (featured in NY Times, etc.), which is famous for their pulled pork and where many dozen people queue up just to get seats. 85 South's pulled pork is right up there or even better in juicyness and taste.

The pulled pork can be accompanied by three different sauces, each with their very own delicious taste direction and compliment the pulled pork very nicely. Since there is a full bottle of each sauce on every table, there's definitely no need to ration - go full in if you want! The cole-slaw is not based on mayonnaise, but as ha very tasty tomato-base, which feels much lighter and has ha nice tanginess.

We loved it so much, that I somehow messed up our nice plan and went for another portion of pulled pork, but this time with fries for me. They have steak fries and while I'm rather a fan of thin fries, they use a special Southern Californian seasoning, which give those fries an extra kick. Some might say it's too salty, but for me it was just right.

Already quite full, I had to convince my wife to taste the ribs. She didn't want to taste even one single piece because she was so full off the pulled pork already. But when the ris arrived and after she tasted only one single bite, she was literally hooked! I was already quite stuffed as well, but couldn't stop eating more of those delicious ribs. They don't come out glazed with any sauce, but come instead with a very nice and unique spice rub. And that's perfectly fine, as you can still add any of the three sauces if you like. But we just enjoyed the ribs as they were.

Totally stuffed after those three portions and deperately wanting a digstion nap, we were already thinking when we could come back to have more. But next time, we will stick to one portion per person - at least that's once again only the plan...
Other Info. : The HKD 150 per head were because we had 3 dishes, which made us very full. One dish per person is probably enough for most, so HKD 100 per head does not seem unrealistic.
