This is a new place that has not been opened for long. The owner seems a little amateur but the enthusiasm is there.
It's not big - 10 to 12 seats at most. The menu is a bit limited - two types of soup, various pies, savoury crepes, chicken curry, and beef noodles are the main items. Choices for lunch and dinner are very similar, except at dinner time they have crepes as dessert as well.
Taste wise - the curry is ok, the beef noodle soup is fine. And the papaya and fish soup is good too. The main problem with the place is consistency and quality control which I think are purely due to lack of experience. For example, part of the noodles in the beef noodle soup were still stuck in one big lump when it arrived, which meant it was not shaken loose when being cooked - a very basic requirement when cooking noodles. And then the crepes - I had it twice - the first time the texture of the crepe was fine but it was a bit too thick and oily, so the second time I asked for it to be thinner and cooked in less oil. It was done exactly as I asked for, but for some reason the crepe itself became very chewy and hard to cut up. It seemed that the crepe mixtures for the first and second time had different quantities of basic ingredients. Maybe made by different people. They stress on their crepes being "French style", but sorry, anyone who has had crepes in France could tell these are far far from being remotely "French".
In terms of price, they are very very reasonable indeed.
You can tell that they are quite proud of the food that they serve, so I think they genuinely don't realise about these problems. For such a simple menu they should be able to do a lot better than they are doing now. Otherwise they may not survive the fast growing competition in the area.
Perhaps I am being too harsh on these people. Maybe I am just a fussy eater. But the things that I have pointed out can be easily rectified and I really hope they improve in time because the place has great potential to be what they want it to be - a cozy, friendly, relaxed place for the middle class clientele living nearby. The staff are all very friendly and open to comments, let's see if they really manage to turn this place into the hidden gem of Tai Hang.
